The seven-time champion added that regardless of the FIA president’s views, he would not ease off in his activism and that all F1 drivers should be similarly “outspoken” on issues close to their hearts. Lewis Hamilton continues to set pace off F1 track in tackling big issues (The Guardian)

While his Mercedes is uncompetitive, Hamilton has not let that slow him down in using F1 as a platform to speak out from.

Elsewhere, he is now a Brazilian citizen after after a bill passed by the country’s lower house of parliament. He clarified his recent comments on Twitter this week and said that sport should be “a catalyst of progress in society.” I had an epic win in São Paulo last year and my biggest following is in Brazil.” In Azerbaijan on Friday, Hamilton underlined he had no intention of stepping back and urged more drivers to become involved. After seven years of unprecedented Mercedes domination helped him to 103 GP wins, Hamilton’s 2022 car is not at the level of Red Bull or Ferrari. Once again, it looks like a supporting role for the seven-time world champion on the track in Baku this weekend. “For every single one of us here to do more, to speak out more, to spark more conversations.

He’s crashing at most race weekends and he’s in a tricky place. “If you want to mature someone in Formula 1, like Piastri, then Alpine has set aside a decent budget for this: a budget to park him and get him used to Formula 1,” he said. With Alpine set to retain Ocon and Alonso as its driver line-up for 2023, Coronel said the team would be foolish not to give Piastri the chance to gain any experience he can in F1. And the opportunity to drive in F1 could happen sooner than anticipated, largely because of the underwhelming form of Nicholas Latifi at Williams. But the French-based team announced earlier this year it would allow Piastri to be loaned to another team with the goal of developing his craft before eventually returning to Alpine. Piastri has been made to bide his time as Alpine’s reserve driver this year, despite winning three consecutive title in a stellar junior racing career.

False dawn for F1 giants as Mercedes star fumes; Ferrari gun's ominous warning: Practice Wrap.

We seem fast on the straights and it’s sometimes a set-up compromise with this type of circuit, but let’s see how we go tomorrow.” AlphaTauri seems like it’s striking that compromise better despite lacking the headline times. The Baku track is punishing for engines given around three-quarters of the lap is spent at full throttle, and it’s little surprise Red Bull Racing has wheeled out fresh power units for both drivers this weekend. Russell’s clearly had enough of the infernal bouncing. “It’s crazy out there through those high-speed corners, the car’s fully bottoming out. “There was a difference between the cars. “Obviously we’ve seen it,” Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner told Sky Sports, “We’ve got the data from it. For one, both RBR drivers believe they made set-up errors on Friday afternoon, the rectification of which might swing momentum back in their favour. Some of that was down to the bouncing, of which George Russell has clearly had enough. Red Bull Racing battled rear wing problems on Verstappen’s car in first practice. He even beat the Bulls in the speed trap. “Weight is always a critical factor, you’re obviously chasing that all over the car,” Horner said.

I think we need to open the debate more than anything. “It is just unnecessary with the technology we have in today’s environment, it just seems unnecessary that we are running a Formula One car at over 200 mph millimetres from the ground and it’s a recipe for disaster. More than Monaco, we need to think [about] as drivers and F1 how much of a toll a driver should be paying for his back and his health in an F1 career with this kind of car philosophy? “I mean, for what it’s worth we are not as massively in favor for it [regulation change] as a team because with every race we do, we are learning more and more about the car and any changes is going to limit that learning. F1 introduced a budget cap last year to curb spending among the sport's top teams and level the playing field across the grid.

F1 Drivers Question Possible Salary Cap As They 'Put Their Lives at ... (Sports Illustrated)

Verstappen and Bottas pointed out the risk while Sainz, Vettel and Hamilton pointed out how F1 is booming.

“Isn’t it a funny coincidence that it’s the first time that teams can actually make money with racing in Formula One and something like the salary cap for drivers pops up? And now when the sport is booming, you want to cap us, no? It’s consistently growing and the teams are earning more money than ever before, and we are a huge part of that. Lewis Hamilton added: “I think there are many of us here who have been heavily invested in as youngsters and have had to pay that back, which you would naturally want to do anyway. If it gets capped, and so on, it’s much harder, and will interest people much less to ever invest into young drivers and invest into people having chances to get to Formula One in the first place.” The sport is considering implementing driver salary caps at some point in the future, but no agreement has been made.

Sainz: Taking extra risks cost shot at Baku F1 pole (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Carlos Sainz admits that a mistake on his final Formula 1 run in Q3 cost him a shot at pole position for the Azerbaijan GP.

“After a couple of moments in the last few races, I've decided to take a bit this approach. Already the first lap of Q3 I had a couple of very tight moments with the wall, and probably the second one trying to clean everything up, I actually did a mistake. Sainz was fastest after the first runs, despite a close brush with the wall.

Today I lost over a tenth just on the straight line just because of the bottoming compared to George. So yeah, it is what it is. And literally I was here to 1.30am last night, all the mechanics and all the engineers had left obviously [due to the curfew]. I'm here studying, I'm doing everything I can, I'm working with the guys back at the factory. "When I go and talk to some of the other drivers like Valtteri [Bottas], have you got any bouncing? But the others also have like a Monza wing I think here, so we have a lot of work to do." "I miss already Barcelona, just driving down the straight and there's no problem," he said. "And we can't have this for four years of this car.

Failed F1 experiments won't force Mercedes change of approach (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Mercedes says recent failed car experiments by Lewis Hamilton will not force a change of approach in trying to improve its Formula 1 car.

"We are at the moment not in the hunt for a race win on merit. He said: "There was a different floor solution on his car that didn't work. "And this is what we are doing, and this is also what we are going to do in the race and in Montreal."

F1 teams already rejected rules tweak to eradicate porpoising (autosport.com)

It's a challenge, a technical challenge, I think we look at ourselves, we made already some progress, and I think in the future, we can do more progress. “I think that it's a challenge for the drivers, no doubt. So, we need to see how that develops. A lot of us kind of can barely keep the car in a straight line over these bumps, we're going round the last two corners at 300 kilometres an hour, bottoming out." "I think it's just a matter of time before we see a major incident. “We understand that the severity we see in some cars is brutal on the drivers, and that's why it is a fair point to bring forward to the Technical Advisory Committee, to see if it makes sense to address it,” said Seidl.

Another Ferrari failure as both cars blow up; Ricciardo's huge safety car win: F1 LIVE.

Ricciardo was quickly running a second faster than those ahead of him. Perez pitted on lap 17 for hards, making a slow stop, dropping into a battle with Russell for third. Verstappen then pitted for hards, dropping into second well behind Leclerc. Ricciardo was running seventh, behind yet-to-pit Norris and Fernando Alonso, but ahead of Pierre Gasly and others. The virtual safety car was deployed. A lock-up for Leclerc also hurt him.

Max Verstappen wins Azerbaijan F1 GP as Ferrari suffer double ... (The Guardian)

The defending champion tightened his grip on the title race with victory as Charles Leclerc suffered a power unit failure in Baku.

With Pérez offering no challenge, Verstappen cruised to the flag, claiming the fifth win of his championship defence. Mercedes are still battling with porpoising and the bouncing problems led to Hamilton complaining about back pain. Verstappen took the lead into the opening bend with Pérez offering little resistance. He was stationary for five seconds with the front jack jammed underneath his car. The Mexican, who took a bonus point for the fastest lap, is 21 points adrift of his Red Bull teammate. Pérez soon moved two seconds clear of Leclerc, with Verstappen occupying the Monegasque’s mirrors.

Azerbaijan GP: Verstappen leads Red Bull 1-2 as Ferrari implodes (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Max Verstappen led a bruising Red Bull 1-2 to win Formula 1's 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix once Ferrari had endured a disaster as polesitter Charles Leclerc ...

Schumacher crossed the line in 14th. Red Bull reacted by pitting Verstappen for a second time to take on a set of hard tyres to the flag, finally nailing a 2.7s stop, before Perez made his stop for hards on the same lap 34. But a rear-left delay meant more time was lost in the pitlane thanks to a 4.4s stop, to give Verstappen a lead of 10s when the four-minute VSC interluded was over. Red Bull called Verstappen in for his jump to hards only two laps later, and he too endured a sub-par 3.5s service to rejoin in the lead with a 13s deficit to Leclerc – managing overheating rear tyres - as Perez nicked fastest lap from the Ferrari while running 4s behind Verstappen. Perez completed the first lap with 1.3s in hand over Leclerc to immediately escape the DRS zone and extended that by half a second over the next two tours to cement first place. Verstappen was able to have a look up the inside of Leclerc but thought better of it as Sainz tried to get in on the act before dropping adrift of the leading three cars.

He had tried to pass Esteban Ocon’s Alpine at Turn 3 early on but overshot the corner and had to spin turn, dropping to 12th. Verstappen, Perez, Russell and Hamilton stopped again, with Gasly and Tsunoda staying out, the latter gaining a spot from Hamilton. Perez pitted for fresh hards on lap 17 but also suffered a slow stop and rejoined in third, just ahead of Russell. Verstappen stopped on lap 19, meaning a nine-lap fresher tyres advantage over Leclerc as he rejoined 13s behind him. Perez extended a 2s lead by the time DRS was activated, while Verstappen began to pressure Leclerc for second on lap five. Sainz then pulled off at Turn 4 with a hydraulic failure on lap nine, causing a virtual safety car that Leclerc, Russell, Hamilton, Vettel and Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) decided to pit under.
