The Quarry review - sumptuous slasher horror digs its own grave (Eurogamer.net)

Supermassive's latest is one of the team's very best - but for one smart, but disastrously implemented mechanic.

Become a supporter of Eurogamer and you can view the site completely ad-free, as well as gaining exclusive access to articles, podcasts and conversations that will bring you closer to the team, the stories, and the games we all love. But this would be added via a "post-launch update," however, with no hard time scale for it and no confirmation of the exact plan for the fix. We've since been told that the team is "working actively to fix" this specific instance of the issue and "prevent it happening" once the game releases, possibly by even turning off the Death Rewind option for this particular sequence or at least giving you a proper head's up. If it hadn't have been for that thoroughly unjust Rewind right at the end of my playthrough, The Quarry - with its stunning visuals, wonderful voice work, fabulous score, and intriguing plot line - would have been one of my favourite games of the year thus far, and one of the best horror romps for some time. It's one thing to kill off a character; it's another to kill off a player's enthusiasm. It's always been my biggest hang up in the Dark Anthology titles, and it hasn't been quelled in Supermassive's latest adventure, I'm afraid. Perhaps most interestingly, The Quarry - ostensibly separate from the Dark Anthology series, but sharing much of its DNA - includes a new feature called Death Rewind, which gives you three opportunities to intervene when a character dies and jump back to make different choices to help them survive. To get to Chapter 10 you have to replay the entire game again; every cut-scene, every chase, every decision, every minute. Beyond a long, tedious spell in a police station jail that outstayed its welcome, it's usually well-paced, too, giving you ample time to get over the action-packed sequences without dulling its shine, albeit with a handful of unfortunate cuts that promptly deflate the tension that had been carefully building for the last ten minutes or so. Sometimes you'll go back just a couple of minutes or so, and other times, you might lose a half hour. You'll soon discover that they're not alone in the woods, and so begins the tricky task of keeping everyone alive long enough to see the Sun come up. If you've spent any time with any of Supermassive's previous adventures, The Quarry's formula is unlikely to surprise you as it deviates little from its established template.

The Quarry launch trailer shows off the Until Dawn successor's cast (GamesRadar)

Supermassive Games has given us another peep at The Quarry with a launch trailer at Summer Game Fest, showing off the game's cast of characters further.

Naturally, a character asks the stranger what he's on about before the launch trailer starts good and proper. "It's not a long wait though - online multiplayer will be added via an update by July 8. "We've made the difficult decision to delay the online multiplayer mode to deliver the best possible experience for you," director Will Byles said on Twitter at the time.

The Quarry | How to keep everyone alive (GodisaGeek.com)

If you're looking to keep everyone alive in The Quarry and nab the Rough Night achievement, then look no further than our handy guide.

You will undo the remaining infections – most notably Nick’s – and now all the nine counselors are alive and uninfected when the sun rises. This will keep him alive for the remainder of the night Once you are on the trail of Silas, Ryan will offer Laura the vial of werewolf blood that he found when rescuing Nick from Bobby earlier in the night. When things are kicking off after Laura has turned, you will have the opportunity as Ryan to shoot Chris Hackett. You need to do this to save everyone else long enough to progress the story. You want to pick two switches that add up to the cage number you are wanting to unlock. Jump in the lake to try and retrieve the rotor arm. Doing so will mean you can find them again later in the story and use them to escape capture. Be sure to hide the syringe behind the brick in your cell that you freed earlier in the chapter. When Ryan and Laura have found Jacob in a cell, under the Hackett House, there are a couple of interrupts that need your attention. This is the first thing you’ll need to do in The Quarry to keep everyone alive. Then when you’re inside, be sure to find the abandoned toy, and take it with you. Either way, see below to find out how to keep everyone alive in The Quarry and bag the Rough Night achievement.

The Quarry Endings – the two main resolutions to the game (The Loadout)

The Quarry, as a narrative-focused horror game where your choices matter, is all about wanting to discover what kind of ending you might get. But, there are ...

And, then the newspaper article on the paper can change depending on how many people have survived and how much evidence you have collected. The majority of this ending revolves around finding all the evidence locations in the game. The individual deaths can be different depending on who kills who and how they died, leading to numerous different permutations of who collectively survives or dies. Here the two hosts of the Bizarre Yet Bonafide podcast run through a newspaper article and the stories they have heard about the Hackett’s Quarry fire from six years ago. Below, you can find the overview of the two The Quarry endings and how your choices can affect these. During this scene, the game will roll through all the characters in the game, from playable to non-playable.

Why Ariel Winter And David Arquette's Spooky New Video Game ... (Cinema Blend)

The new horror video game The Quarry features stars such as Modern Family's Ariel Winter and Scream's David Arquette, and it deserves a lot of love from ...

If even that is too random for those who wish to factor in predetermined fates, there’s an option where all the characters survive, and an option where they all bite the bullet by the end. As a game that already isn’t overwhelmingly interactive in the first place, with only sporadic exploration accompanying the plethora of dialogue and behavior choices, The Quarry knows that might still be too intense for certain people who just want to check out the game for its story merits. With a general lack of cellphones and other digital devices, the game feels as if it was taken right out of the 1980s, and it plays into that vibe while also subverting certain stereotypes. Had this been a straightforward video game review, I might have felt the need to talk about some of the game’s wonkier moments involving dialogue hiccups and erratic facial animation. Not every character stands equal from a quality or likeability perspective — with Laura, Kaitlyn, and Ryan standing out as my personal favorites — but it’s not due to a lack of effort from the actors themselves. When I was a kid, I distinctly remember setting up Coach Mode in NES’ Tecmo Bowl to mirror whatever applicable NFL games were set for that week, and just watching the computer play itself. At this point in their respective careers, fans have a general idea of what to expect from each of them, and there are no disappointments across the board. As the spiritual successor to Until Dawn, The Quarry definitely wears its affinity for the entirety of the horror genre on its blood-speckled sleeves, meaning players can expect to see a range of influences on display throughout the story. Let’s lay out the rest of the talented ensemble below, though without any character information as not to spoil anything on that front. But more on that below, as we take a spoiler-free dive into why The Quarry is as good as it gets for horror movie fanatics. The company’s summer camp frightfest The Quarry has arrived, and not only is it a total blast, but it’s as close as you’ll get to actually playing a horror movie, with a star-studded mo-capped voice cast (including Modern Family vet Ariel Winter, Scream’s David Arquette, and Prodigal Son vet Halston Sage. While many horror projects live or die by the quality of their effects and other aesthetics, a terrible cast delivering terrible lines can ruin anyone’s else’s best efforts.

The Quarry best ending: How to keep everyone alive (For The Win)

Ah, The Quarry's best ending. The one where all the teens don't die. You want it, we've got it. Keeping everyone alive in The Quarry is challenging, ...

Max will always be a werewolf, will almost-always get cured, and will always die if he heads across the water. Those are the key decisions – much easier to keep everyone alive than you might have thought, isn’t it? On the upside, you can kill Jacob with a gun, which you might really want to by this point. Use loud sounds to distract the werewolf. Still, for the main squad of nine, there are a number of ways to get them to the end alive, well, and ready to make their case to the police that no, officer, honest, there were monsters. Even though the game presents them alongside the teens in the closing crawl of who lived and died, some are inevitable for the plot to move forward. Keeping Emma up is mostly in QTEs, but also grabbing the right items. Be nice to him as much as possible, if you really want. Just don’t leave the island. The one where all the teens don’t die. Keeping everyone alive in The Quarry is challenging, though there are a few different routes to take. Naturally, what follows will include giga-spoilers for The Quarry, from start to finish.

The Quarry review: thrills, chills, and only a few spills await (Rock Paper Shotgun)

The Quarry is a thrilling-ish monster-movie in game form. The charismatic characters and tropey twists get these games back on a fun track.

There are a couple of big switcheroos in the plot in general, but it is, for example, likely that the character spending most of their time running around the forest in their pants is going to be a dude, and in any situation it's usually a girl that leads from the front and takes charge. For the most part you know how this goes, but some innovations this time include three lives you can expend to undo the death of a character by taking you back to the last choice that sealed their fate, slightly easier QTEs, but also QTEs that you might want to fail... You can see how the story can turn out very differently as well, and even the results I got for my set of survivors made me want to try again - though not enough that I'd give it a full playthrough, I don't think. Everyone is going to have to stay another night at the camp, something which comprehensively alarms Mr. H (David Arquette, who appeared for about five minutes total of my eight-ish hour playthrough, so fans may have buyer's remorse on this front). It turns out this is because Hackett's Quarry is both a) haunted and b) full of monsters, which frankly seems irresponsible to keep such a child-centric organisation open under such circumstances, but that is just one of Chris Hackett's baffling decisions you will uncover over the course of your adventure. How will things change if you're mean to Ted Raimi's weirdo cop character Travis? Your friend is in trouble, so you should probably take the shortcut through the woods - but then you'll have to pass a bunch of QTEs too. Broadly, it is the story of a group of camp counselors, one night in a quarry-based summer camp, and how baffling organisational choice can lead to ruin.

2K Games And Geek Culture Celebrate 'The Quarry' Game Launch ... (Geek Culture)

Geek Culture and 2K Games welcomed 100 fans to an exclusive screening of The Quarry at The Projector to celebrate the launch of the game.

In a surprise turn of events, eight random audience members for this The Quarry screening were invited up on stage to pick a tarot card each and participate in a Truth or Dare session. A fan of movies, games, and Japanese culture, Si Jia’s greatest weakness is the Steam Summer Sale. Or any Steam sale, really. That’s a heavy responsibility to bear, and with nine teenagers trapped in the thick of danger, the pressure to make the right choices can be crippling. Over the course of one-hour of gameplay, attendees had to witness their decisions unfold on the silver screen, and live through the consequences of them. Even with the lights off, the atmosphere was electric, likely due to excitement, impending fear, or a mixture of both. As an interactive game that combines player agency with the atmospheric experience of movies, Supermassive Games’ The Quarry is a perfect blend of game-movie storytelling that fans of horror games would love.

We also don’t know much about Constance, played by Lin Shaye, as the official website only hints that “they can’t wait to meet you…”. Lin has been acting since the 1970s, including in horror films as her best-known role is Elise Rainier in the Insidious series. Miles is no stranger to horror films, appearing in 2018’s Halloween alongside Jamie Lee Curtis. He’s also Jackson Van De Kamp in The X-Files reboot. Despite often doodling in her sketchbook, she is desperate for romance before the end of summer. Kaitlyn is perhaps one of the more confident members of the counsellor team, although she’s not afraid to stir up trouble now and then. Although he has trouble letting people see his more vulnerable side, Nick is a bit of a teen heartthrob. Emma is played by Halston Sage, who some may know as Lacey from Paper Towns, Taylor in Goosebumps, and Dazzler in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Justice Smith plays Ryan, another one of the counsellors. Skyler Gisondo is Laura’s boyfriend Max, who is a bit of a slacker with little ambition. However, her most prominent role to date is as Elsa in Welcome to Marwen alongside Steve Carell and Gwendoline Christie. In TV comedies such as My Name is Earl and Friends, he also features in one-off roles. With 16 characters in The Quarry, that means each player has to take on multiple roles at a time. I had an absolute bloody blast with The Quarry, and I say this knowing that it won’t be for everyone. It’s amazing the emotional nuance that Supermassive has been able to capture via the studio, especially in the characters’ eyes, and it makes for some very convincing scenes. It’s not an understatement to say that The Quarry is an experience you watch more than you play, and I can understand how that may turn certain gamers off. There’s lots of conversation, lots of dialogue choices to make, and enough QTEs to make you froth at the mouth for Shenmue IV. As you can tell, the setup is gloriously ‘80s in flavor, and The Quarry takes that retro foundation and sprints with it. Back in May, I was privy to a preview for The Quarry, Supermassive Games’ new teen horror interactive slasher movie, and I walked (ran?) away wanting more.

We really wanted to push down that route of: actually, it wasn't about them being bad, but we wanted to push the player down the route of suspicion and mistrust. The Hills Have Eyes is another version of this, but the Deliverance comparison to The Quarry is the closest, because in this the folk in question aren't freaks, they're just people with their own ruleset. The Evil Dead was very much a part of our thinking, and you'll see that there's a bunch of POV shots in the game that we pretty much stole to get that same sort of feel [laughs]." "There's two films that I'm trying to choose between [for the last one]. There's Deliverance and then there's Southern Comfort, which is a cracking film, but I think it has to be Deliverance. The feeling films like these capture so well is something like: there's a bunch of people up here, and they've got their own rule-set. And there's this contemporary feel with the modern teenagers, the dialogue, the relationships, and all that sort of stuff. And there's also very much a 50s feel to the Hackett's Quarry setting side to the game. So you're really still talking about this story of discovery; it's still a Who Done It of sorts, more than the standard horror which it is now." We've got a very kickass music track going all the way through The Quarry, and that was very much taken from the idea of An American Werewolf. It just has some fantastic music tracks – Bad Moon Rising, and all of that good stuff. It was considered a huge mistake, but it was really impactful on the audience." "To be really honest, a lot of what we do goes right back to Psycho. When Alfred Hitchcock gets Janet Lee killed right near the beginning of the film – no one believed you could do that with a star! "So we really pushed The Quarry down those avenues – the summer camp, let's make it on a lake. And it wasn't that we stole specific ideas, it was just that you can't go back to before Scream. You can't make horror films from before Scream because all of that stuff is now out in the open.

The Quarry: How to Keep Everyone Alive (Game Rant)

Completing The Quarry with all playable characters alive is no easy task, but making the right decisions is key to unlocking the best ending.

In the first section, there are a few QTEs to be aware of when climbing the stairs, and failure can result in death. Head to the 3rd office upstairs and investigate the locker; inside is a syringe that will be used later to organize a less risky escape. When prompted with the shotgun choice, GIVE TO RYAN. After some PROBING and REFLECTIVE questions, a sudden event prompt will interrupt the scene as Silas attacks, but DO NOT RAISE GUN yet. After a short cutscene, TAKE COVER and complete the QTE, pausing only to leave a DETERMINED comment before the shootout. Eventually, Laura will escape the cell and be able to roam the police station freely. The trio will now be back around the campfire and Ryan attempts to patch Nick's wound. Consequence: Travis will appear at the end of the prologue to drug Laura and shoot at Max's assailant. Back in the poolhouse, Nick will suddenly grab Abi and throw her across the room. After completing multiple QTEs in quick succession, Ryan needs to SHOUT and then SHOOT the hunter to rescue Nick. DO NOT climb the tree or Abi will be caught; wait instead for the timer to run out. Choose to TAKE THE WRENCHES and break into the bunker. After exploring the woods in The Quarry's prologue and potentially discovering a few Quarry collectibles, Laura will get spooked by an unseen figure and flee.

The Quarry Bad Ending Guide: How To Kill All Characters (GameSpot)

The Quarry is the latest interactive horror game from Supermassive Games. This time a group of camp counselors get to party after the campers have gone home ...

This results in the monster killing Kaitlyn, who is the final character at this point. While playing as Dylan in the scrapyard, you will begin to operate a crane. In a cage is a monster and Laura will aim her gun at the monster. Ryan will grab the shotgun and aim at the monster, shoot the monster. Ryan will be prompted to interrupt her, don't interrupt Laura. Laura will shoot the monster, which turns out to be Nick, who turned into a monster earlier in the game. Later you will play as Laura and Ryan, when they find a monster in the attic. The floor breaks and they all fall, resulting in the monster attacking. Later in Chapter 4 you will be playing as Emma and end up in a treehouse--there is no way to avoid the treehouse regardless of your choices. First up is Jacob. Near the start of Chapter 4, you will play as Ryan. Ryan will hear some noises coming from a bush and you can aim a gun at the bush. Regardless of what choices you make here, eventually Nick will shove Abigail against the wall and she will aim a shotgun at him. When you get the option to free-roam in the police station while playing as Laura, immediately go back to bed. As you make choices in The Quarry, it affects the story of each character and if they live or not.

The Quarry interview: chatting horror and relationships with the ... (TechRadar)

We chatted to Supermassive Games' Will Byles, director of The Quarry, about the game and the appeal of the teen horror subgenre.

“A bunch of them were actually asking to be in the games, and they're obsessed,” Byles reveals. A number of older, veteran actors also lent their likeness and voices to the game. “The hard thing I think, really, was Covid. It was really difficult to get out into America,” Byles says. The Quarry “is really scary,” Byles says, “but it's also got a degree of lightness to it. “There's a bit where he's been chased by a monster and he's running around, skidding around, and [he] fell on the floor. In a sign that games like Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures anthology are finding a wide audience, a number of the cast came to Supermassive, not the other way around. “The quarry itself is a place called Hackett's Quarry,” he states, “and it's a really evocative place to set a horror. As Byles hints, each of The Quarry’s main characters appear shallow at first introduction, as if they’re putting on a facade. It's about the honesty of relationships.” So I really wanted to look at what the truth is in people as much as possible.” The Quarry might not be the scariest horror game, but it’s one of the most ambitious and creative I’ve played in years. A ton of effort was clearly put into making The Quarry close to the best game it could possibly be.

The Strength Tarot will only be on the screen for a few seconds, meaning players need to repeatedly press the command button when prompted. Another choice will appear to attack the creature using an item from the bag. Make sure to interact with the clue before opening the hut door, or this clue will be permanently missable. Once this happens, Emma will investigate the trapdoor and reveal a monster attempting to kill her. The Quarry is the latest title by Supermassive Games continuing the trend of balancing "interactive movies" with horror setpieces to produce a cinematic game experience.

Why 'The Quarry' Game Is an Homage to Horror Movies for Better ... (Collider.com)

Whether you consider it a narrative game or a playable movie, this newest choose-your-own-adventure story is Supermassive Games' most cinematic.

Be it visceral or victorious, it is the concluding creative variances where it transcends the limitations of its reference points. What ultimately becomes the most integral part of it being a game is the litany of different endings. This is part of what makes it the best part of the whole experience as it is the most grounded in its own world. It all marks a significant turning point for the studio that returns to the roots of Until Dawn while also being something all its own. Indeed, the presence Raimi has is one of the stronger parts of the game as it sees him give one of the better voice-acting performances that is also part of the best middle sequence where everything begins to kick into high gear. All of this brings us to their most recent work in The Quarry which wears its influences on its sleeve to mixed results.
