WWDC 2022 live blog: iOS 16, iPadOS 16, MacBook Air and more (Tom's Guide)

Apple's expected to preview new versions of all its software platforms at WWDC 2022 and perhaps even introduce some new hardware. Follow our WWDC 2022 live ...

MacBook Air 2022: If new hardware does appear at WWDC, the consensus is that it will be a new MacBook Air 2022. Expect developer-focused talk about building apps for the Mac, while Apple should also reveal a new California-centric code name in the spirit of Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina and Mojave — the most recent macOS nicknames. As for iOS 16, look for a number of changes, even if Apple isn't expected to overhaul the software's look. In the case of iPadOS 16, the focus is likely to be on improved multitasking, as Apple watchers predict Apple's tablets will deliver a more desktop-like experience with resizable windows and easier switching between open apps. If anything, Apple's tvOS presentation could include previews of new and returning Apple TV Plus shows. We're following the WWDC live stream remotely, and we'll be joined by editor in chief Mark Spoonauer and computing editor Alex Wawro from Cupertino with their reaction to whatever Apple announces.

WWDC 22 live updates: Apple unveils iOS 16, the latest update for ... (USA TODAY)

iPhone owners will get the first glimpse of how their devices will change during Apple's keynote Monday at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

The most notable rumored update Apple could reveal is iOS 16 supporting an always-on display, which could provide basic information to users without having to wake the device. Visual lookup will not only spot items in an image and allow you to search them, but you can grab specific elements in the photo and paste them into a message. Notifications will stream from the bottom of the screen with iOS 16, and users can even hide them completely. Apple is upgrading to M2 chips, the latest version of the chips which will run future Mac computers. The app can manage access to your device, disable location sharing, or set up an emergency reset of your phone. Ventura, the name of the new macOS, will include Stage Manager, a feature which will let Mac users focus on the app they're using without the clutter. Apple is introducing some updates to the in-car system CarPlay. Among them: upgraded odometers with an Apple aesthetic, widgets providing trip information, navigation tools and weather details. Passkeys can't be leaked or compromised, said Apple. With a Passkey, you can sign up or log in to a service just using the iPhone. Let's say you start a call on the iPhone. If you're near a Mac, it will alert you asking whether you want to continue your call on the Mac. Another incredible feature: the ability to use your iPhone as a really fancy webcam. It's now the iPad's turn, which is also going to get a big update this fall. There will be a new display scaling setting, to adjust the size of an app's view when multitasking or using the split screen feature. All the operating systems will become available to users this fall.

- The all-new MacBook Air and updated 13-inch MacBook Pro will be available onapple.com/storeand in the Apple Store app. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of MacBook Pro. Both the new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro minimize their impact on the environment, now using 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in the enclosure magnets. The new MacBook Air features a gorgeous 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display, which has been expanded closer to the sides and up around the camera to make room for the menu bar. The new MacBook Air and updated 13-inch MacBook Pro join the even more powerful 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max to round out the strongest lineup of Mac notebooks ever offered. With the power efficiency of M2, all of the capabilities of MacBook Air are built into a silent, fanless design. M2 also comes to the 13-inch MacBook Pro, featuring incredible performance, ProRes acceleration, up to 24GB of memory, and up to 20 hours of battery life — making our most portable pro notebook even better.” Now with M2, Apple’s most portable pro notebook gets even more capabilities in the same great form factor. Designed to dramatically speed up video workflows, M2 also adds a next-generation media engine and a powerful ProRes video engine for hardware-accelerated encode and decode, so systems with M2 will be able to play back more streams of 4K and 8K video than before. Additionally, the Magic Keyboard features a full-height function row with Touch ID, and a spacious, industry-leading Force Touch trackpad. “We’re so excited to bring our new M2 chip to the world’s two most popular laptops — the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Completely redesigned around M2, MacBook Air is thinner, lighter, and faster with a bigger display, better camera, and all-day battery life, in four beautiful finishes. Apple announces redesigned MacBook Air with M2 chip and MagSafe (The Verge)

Apple announced the 2022 MacBook Air at WWDC. This 13.6-inch laptop supports Apple's M2 processor, and it will launch in July 2022 for $1199.

The starting MacBook Air model will ship with a 30W charger, but Apple is offering a new $59 67W power adapter that allows it to quickly charge to 80-percent in just 20 minutes. But if you upgrade this model to macOS Ventura, you’ll be able to take advantage of the Continuity Camera feature that lets you use your MagSafe-ready iPhone’s camera as a webcam. If you want more power, storage, and RAM, the $1,499 model has a 10-core GPU, 8GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. The 2022 MacBook Air features a larger 2560x1664 13.6-inch display with smaller bezels surrounding it. The starting model includes the M2, an eight-core GPU, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. It will be available in silver, space grey, and new “starlight” gold and “midnight” blue colors.

Apple MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 2022: Specs, Price, Features ... (WIRED)

The new lightweight laptop arrives in July and adds a 1080p webcam and the M2 chip.

That also means the new MacBook Air can take advantage of an upgraded 1080p webcam for better quality during video calls, whereas the new MacBook Pro is stuck with the same old 720p camera. Quite bizarrely, the new (and cheaper) MacBook Air is the fancier of the two new laptops. For comparison, the Pro is 3 pounds and 0.61 inches thick.

The latest MacBook Air comes with Apple's new M2 processor and major design improvements. Pre-orders are not live yet, but prices start at $1199.

Apple is also introducing the MacBook Air to MagSafe power this generation, freeing up its two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Coupled with webcam improvements in the upcoming macOS Ventura, the MacBook Air will likely become a leading work from home device. Apple took this opportunity to revisit the design of its leading laptop, moving away from the classic wedge shape to a flatter, more uniform chassis. If you buy them, we may get a small share of the revenue from the sale from our partners. This brand-new processor from Apple brings marked improvements to the company's leading piece of silicon hardware. This doesn't account for the relative performance between these two laptops, but it puts Apple and Microsoft's pricing differences into plain view.

Hands on: MacBook Air (M2, 2022) review (TechRadar)

MacBook Air (M2, 2022) is real, with Apple announcing at its WWDC 2022 event that the follow-up to the best laptop in the world is coming soon.

From our time with the M2-powered 2022 MacBook Air, we could see an immediate improvement in the vibrancy of the screen in the new model. We had a quick play in Final Cut Pro, editing a movie with multiple 4K sources, and it performed brilliantly -- and was completely silent thanks to its lack of fans. The M2 chip brings a lot more to the table. Outside of the different shades available, the laptop features MagSafe charging as well as two Thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack. One of the most radical design overhauls we’ve seen Apple make to an iconic product has reinvigorated the new MacBook Air, and it looks far more modern and elegant. Less welcome will be the news that the combination of bigger webcam and thinner bezels means there’s a visible ‘notch’ that surrounds the webcam and drops down into the menu bar.

The new 2022 MacBook Air delivers some welcome design changes and a powerful new M2 processor that could make it the new Mac to beat.

The $1,099 MacBook Air and $1,299 MacBook Pro aren’t available for pre-order just yet, but with the laptops launching next month, we expect orders to open in the very near future. If you haven’t bought a new MacBook in a while, the new MacBook Air is looking like an absolute no-brainer for most people. Just don’t bother with the new M2 MacBook Pro — you’ll get a bigger screen, better webcam and updated ports on the new Air. In addition to the new MacBook Air, Apple is also updating the 13-inch MacBook Pro with its M2 chip. The new MacBook Air is launching in July and starts at $1,119, or $1,099 for education users. The MacBook Air just got a big makeover — and not just because it now comes in dark blue.
