How to Watch the Ukraine vs. Wales World Cup Playoff Game (The New York Times)

A European playoff on Sunday is a winner-take-all affair for Ukraine, a nation at war, and Wales, which hasn't been the tournament since 1958.

But Wales had waited even longer, and it had waited three months for the chance to complete the job. Wales has not played in the World Cup since 1958. Ukraine had not qualified for the World Cup since 2006, its only previous trip to the tournament. Wales, its players had made clear before the match, had also come to Cardiff to win. That was the other half of Sunday’s story of fraught emotions and national pride. “They make only one demand,” midfielder Taras Stepanenko had told The Guardian of the messages he and his teammates were receiving.

Republic of Ireland followed by a match against Armenia and then a second date with the Irish. It had made a run to the semifinals at Euro 2016 before losing to eventual champion Portugal. But the true star of the match was Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who made nine saves to keep a clean sheet.

"I want to say sorry we didn't score but this is sport, this is how it happens. The visitors had given it everything and, rightfully, both teams were cheered by the fans at the final whistle. This was the sort of match that had both sets of fans queuing to gain entry and milling around hours beforehand. Moments before the players lined up for the anthems, the Welsh folk singer Dafydd Iwan sang "Yma o Hyd," a song adopted by Wales fans as their unofficial anthem. The winner would take it all and, in Wales' case, make history. This was a match where war and football intertwined.

Ukraine's World Cup dream ends in 1-0 loss to Wales (The Washington Post)

When it was over, Ukraine's players stood weeping in the rain in Cardiff, their dream of a World Cup berth ended by Wales in a taut 1-0 game that cruelly ...

“But when it comes to football and the whistle goes [off], we’ll want to win that game. “Most of the world want Ukraine to get through,” Wales Manager Robert Page said, acknowledging his team was not the sentimental favorite. Zinchenko fought back tears last week as he spoke of how his country’s determination to “never give up” inspired the team, whose players took the field with the flag of Ukraine draped over their shoulders. Here’s what that means for the USMNT. We may not have the most talented group, but we give it everything we have got.” “It’s the greatest result in history for Welsh football,” Bale told Sky Sports. “It means everything. “We need to show the people that everyone needs to live in peace and we need to stop the war altogether because you never know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” he told Sky Sports. “Today it’s Ukraine, but tomorrow Russian aggression could be with your country. “If we could click our fingers and take away the pain the Ukraine are going through, we’d do it in a heartbeat,” Page said. Bale fired a kick that Ukraine captain Andriy Yarmolenko deflected into the net for an own goal at the 34-minute mark. And midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko used the postgame platform to make a plea for unity. Words can’t describe how we feel at the moment.” Meanwhile, Gareth Bale, with five goals in his last five appearances for Wales, came through after Dan James won a free kick on the edge of the goal area.

'Crazy journey': how Wales went from worse than Haiti to World Cup ... (The Guardian)

Bale, Ramsey and Hennessey were in the side that sunk to 117th in the world at the stadium where joy abounded on Sunday.

The giant hoardings on the exterior of the Cardiff City Stadium advertise the “timeless charm” of Vietnam and the sandy beaches of Malaysia, the country of the Championship club’s owner, Vincent Tan, but there is only one destination on the lips of those with Welsh blood. We’ve paved the way for the youngsters as well, we’ve welcomed them in and it’s hard to describe what it means to us. Page said Wales were reaping the rewards of the professionalism and identity instilled by Speed, who had targeted reaching the 2014 World Cup after taking over from John Toshack. “Gary’s words and his plan was all based around getting to a World Cup,” says the former Wales midfielder Owain Tudur Jones, an unused substitute that day against Australia. It has taken a little while but this is what Tosh wanted, it’s what Gary saw and thought was possible and now we’re seeing they were spot on.” It was fitting that Bale and Hennessey, who have been inseparable since playing together for Wales’ under-21s and will continue their journey on the biggest stage in November, shared the moment, which Robert Page dedicated to the late Gary Speed, who was nine months in the job in August 2011. Eleven years ago Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Wayne Hennessey walked off the pitch at Cardiff City Stadium after a 2-1 friendly defeat by Australia in front of a crowd of 6,373, some of whom resorted to sarcastic cheers.

Cardiff abuzz with World Cup joy after Wales qualify for first time ... (The Guardian)

Fans of 'bumblebees of football' prolong the celebration – and hatch plans to get to Qatar in November.

The bee shouldn’t be able to take off and we shouldn’t be able to qualify for the World Cup. But it can and now we have. It had been a fine weekend for the suppliers of hats, shirts and flags in the shops opposite Cardiff Castle and people were still coming in for souvenirs on Monday. “We’ve had a difficult couple of years,” said Bob Rice at Castle Welsh Crafts. “So it’s nice to see a bit of hustle and bustle. “The ‘still here’ sentiment is very important,” said Will. “Everyone is together and we always will be.” “Last night was the best, no doubt.” Everybody is having a tough time at the moment – Covid and now the cost of living crisis. “The anthem, the buildup, the game, the celebrations afterwards.

Wales's glorious march to the World Cup is symbolic of a confident ... (The Guardian)

The Welsh football team is thriving, and in those joyful Cardiff scenes on Sunday you could see our culture in rude health too. 'It was always the World Cup ...

As Iwan returned for a post-match encore and the Wales squad sang along, we all joined in the chorus of Yma o Hyd. Some people even knew the words to all the verses. The Football Association of Wales has forged a vision for Welsh football and Welsh culture, particularly through its use of Welsh music. In the Welsh FA’s videos on social media, I’ve been introduced to great Welsh bands, including those that sing in Cymraeg. I first heard Adwaith’s superb song Fel i Fod in a video showcasing the Wales women’s team, while the rousing folk songs of Dafydd Iwan are part of the carefully curated playlists heard before and after matches. And in 1993, Wales narrowly missed out on the World Cup, losing out to Romania after a penalty kick smashed against the crossbar. All Welsh football fans grew up knowing that 1958 was the last time we reached the World Cup finals; that Brazil are the only team to have ever knocked Wales out of a World Cup tournament; that it took Pelé to beat us. In 1982, a Welsh team full of top-flight players somehow failed to win a home game against Iceland, whose team they had thrashed the previous year.
