The Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization, has counted nearly 240 mass shootings so far this year, defined as one in which four or more people were killed or injured. Their names have not yet been released. Police officers were patrolling South Street, a lively area with many restaurants and bars, when “they observed several active shooters shooting into the crowd,” Inspector D.F. Pace of the Philadelphia Police Department said at a news conference early Sunday.

Two men and a woman were killed, officials said. South Street is "known for being a corridor of entertainment" with multiple bars and restaurants, Pace said. "We're uncertain whether he was struck or not, but the officer was able to get that individual to drop his gun and flee," the police inspector said.

“People were coming off the street with blood splatters on white sneakers and skinned knees and skinned elbows. President Joe Biden has urged Congress to act with renewed calls for a ban on assault-style weapons, as well as tougher background checks on firearm purchases. A bartender named Eric Walsh was closing up the outdoor area of a nearby venue when the shooting began. “There were hundreds of individuals just enjoying South Street as they do every single weekend when this shooting broke out,” Pace said. Officers patrolling the entertainment district witnessed “several active shooters” firing into a crowd, a Philadelphia police inspector said Sunday. Police shot at one of the gunmen, but it’s unclear whether the suspect was hit, Inspector D.F. Pace of the Philadelphia Police Department said. The suspect dropped their weapon and fled the scene, Pace said, adding that police are currently looking for the shooters and are reviewing surveillance footage to help identify the gunmen.

It’s a test of the federal government as to whether we can deliver at a moment of just fierce anxiety amongst the American public. Of the 14 people who were injured and brought to hospitals, three — two men, ages 22 and 34, and a woman, 27 — were pronounced dead on arrival, police told reporters. Two other men also were shot, according to a news release from the Saginaw Police Department. A message left with detectives Sunday afternoon seeking more information wasn’t immediately returned, the AP reported. Of the five weapons used in the shooting, two, both semiautomatic handguns, were recovered, police said. About 35 to 40 minutes before the shooting on South Street in Philadelphia, police responded to another report of shots fired nearby. “I’m tired of standing in front of you talking about guns and bodies. In all, five guns were fired, police said, not including the one discharged by the police officer on the scene. “Multiple casings” of ammunition were strewn about the South Street area, Pace added. It was not clear whether the shootings were related. Murphy said three people were killed, two who were shot and one who was struck by a vehicle. An officer fired several shots at one of the gunmen as he was shooting, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said during a news conference Sunday afternoon. Several victims remain in critical condition after what police described as a chaotic and harrowing situation, as hundreds of people were out on a pleasant summer night.

However, some Republican officials like Texas Gov. Greg Abbott argue the solution to mass shootings is to increase security at facilities like schools and to improve mental health resources. The Philadelphia and Chattanooga shootings follow a series of highly publicized shootings last month in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Buffalo, New York; and Uvalde, Texas, where 19 elementary school students and two teachers were killed by a single gunman May 24. Philadelphia police “don’t have a lot of information” about the suspects in that city’s shooting, but hope to gather substantial video footage from cameras at area businesses, Pace said. Key Democrats including Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin (Ill.) have said the Uvalde shooting could mark a turning point in the national gun control debate, possibly allowing a bipartisan compromise to modestly boost gun restrictions. Mass shootings and active-shooter incidents have become more frequent in the United States over the last two years, and the number of active shooter incidents that qualify as “mass killings” with three or more deaths increased from five in 2020 to 12 last year, the FBI reported. Three people were killed after “several active shooters” opened fire into a crowd in downtown Philadelphia shortly before midnight Saturday, local police said, followed hours later by a shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, that also led to three deaths—the latest in a series of mass shootings that have rekindled debate over gun laws.
