Ogunleye noted that efforts to better understand the virus' behavior have been hindered by a lack of funding and technical capacity, as well as the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, the country has developed that capability and has been sequencing monkeypox samples. Adesola Yinka-Ogunleye, an epidemiologist at the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, said she was puzzled by the virus' behavior in 2017. The outbreak was eventually contained by Nigerian public health officials who identified cases and urged infected individuals to isolate—but the virus did not disappear. In addition, the agency said that, given the wide geographic scope of cases, the virus "may have been circulating unrecognized for several weeks or longer." In May, CDC issued an alert encouraging doctors and state health departments to remain vigilant for potential monkeypox cases.

U.S. health officials said genetic analysis of recent monkeypox cases suggests there are two distinct strains in the country, raising the possibility that the virus has been circulating undetected for some time. WHO said the sudden and unexpected detection of monkeypox in numerous countries "suggests that there might have been undetected transmission for some unknown duration of time followed by recent amplifier events." Until last month, the disease had not been known to cause large epidemics beyond central and west Africa, where it has mostly affected people in rural areas who come into close contact with infected wild animals. Most monkeypox patients experience only fever, body aches, chills and fatigue. LONDON — (AP) — British health officials reported 77 more monkeypox cases on Monday, raising the total to more than 300 across the country. Britain's Health Security Agency said last week most cases have been in gay or bisexual men ranging in age from 20 to 49 and that “investigations to date have identified links to gay bars, saunas, and the use of dating apps in the U.K. and abroad.”

We want to really encourage physicians that if they see a rash and they’re concerned it might be monkeypox, to go ahead and test for that.” “There could be community-level transmission that is happening, and that’s why we want to really increase our surveillance efforts. “We want to ensure that people with high-risk exposures have rapid access to vaccines and, if they become sick, can receive appropriate treatment,” said Raj Panjabi, MD, the White House senior director for global health security and biodefense. So far, these monkeypox outbreaks in the US and around the world are being primarily reported among men who have sex with men. The others are suspected to have had contact with infected persons. Monkeypox is a zoonotic virus, meaning it is transmitted from animals (such as monkeys) to humans.

Monkeypox Cases Have Been Found in These 12 States (Newsweek)

According to the CDC, there are now 24 confirmed cases in the U.S. from two distinct outbreaks.

In a statement on the Department of Health website, Health Department Acute Communicable Disease Program Manager Dana Perella said: "The threat to Philadelphians from monkeypox is extremely low." It said the risk of monkeypox to the general public is very low. Twelve U.S. states have reported cases of monkeypox as of June 3, with California currently having the highest number of cases. We are working closely with their team on the response." Second, it doesn't spread as easily and third, we don't see asymptomatic cases. Colorado is currently recorded as having two confirmed cases of monkeypox, as of June 2. Georgia is currently investigating its first reported case of monkeypox. The Guardian reports that monkeypox is not likely to become a serious danger to public health. It is a virus transmitted to humans from animals, with symptoms similar but less severe to those seen in the past in smallpox patients. One case of monkeypox has been reported in Virginia, according to the Virginia Department of Health. The case is in a female from northern Virginia who recently traveled to an African country where the disease is known to occur more commonly. Florida has three confirmed monkeypox cases currently, according to the Florida Department of Health. One of the Floridian cases is also counted in the U.K. case numbers, as the individual was tested while they were in the U.K. Symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and exhaustion, followed by a skin rash.

Ring vaccination might help curtail monkeypox outbreaks - Harvard ... (Harvard Health)

The monkeypox outbreak currently traveling around the globe is the largest ever recorded outside of western and central Africa.

In light of the current monkeypox outbreak, you may soon be hearing more about ring vaccination. Please note the date of last review or update on all articles. (The US smallpox vaccination program was discontinued in 1972, and smallpox was declared eradicated worldwide in 1980.) It may come in handy for monkeypox as well. Of course, vaccinations can only work if people are willing to receive them. At this time, the threat to the general public is not high. If monkeypox is spread by sexual contact, the rash may show up first on or near the genitals. One method of vaccination, called ring vaccination, has worked well in the past to contain smallpox and Ebola outbreaks. This approach requires widespread awareness of monkeypox, rapid isolation of suspected cases, and an efficient contact tracing system. This selective approach is called ring vaccination. People who received a smallpox vaccine in the past may have some protection from monkeypox. By now, you’ve probably heard that there is a monkeypox outbreak traveling around the globe.

Monkeypox is a virus in the orthopox family. Virginia reported its first presumed case of monkeypox in May. So far, cases have been reported in 12 states, according to the CDC. As of June 3, there were 25 confirmed cases in the U.S. The World Health Organization’s top monkeypox expert last week said she doesn’t expect the hundreds of cases reported to date to turn into another pandemic. If the sample tests back positive, it will add to the list of 25 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the U.S. Starting in May, the United Kingdom began reporting monkeypox cases, as did a number of nations in Western Europe. By the end of May, there were over 200 cases reported in countries that are not normally associated with the virus according to the World Health Organization. D.C. Health said Sunday it may have found the first possible monkeypox case in the District.

Can monkeypox cause keloid scars? (Open Access Government)

Monkeypox is a rare viral disease from Africa that causes a rash similar to chicken pox and may result in keloid scars.

After a few days a rash evolves with tiny blisters called vesicles, typically starting on the head and spreading down the body. They can develop after very minor skin damage, such as an acne spot or a piercing, and spread beyond the original area of skin damage. Usually the rash appears one to five days after the first symptoms.

As of Sunday, 25 cases had been reported across 12 states, according to the latest CDC data, including five cases in California and five cases in New York. U.S. Public health officials have done 120 tests so far for orthopoxviruses. On Sunday, public health officials in the District of Columbia announced its first positive orthopoxvirus case, which could be its first monkeypox case. The U.S. has millions of vaccine doses in its strategic national stockpile, according to CNBC. Two vaccines are available. The shots have a 3-year shelf life. “Apart from patients hospitalized for the purpose of isolation, few hospitalizations have been reported,” the WHO said. Several countries are using monkeypox and smallpox vaccines for close contacts, the WHO said. Some people also reported that the genital rash or bumps appear before other symptoms, such as fever, and that lesions appear at different stages of development, which isn’t usually how monkeypox has shown up in the past. Most cases have been reported in the WHO’s European region, spanning 20 countries. Since January, seven endemic countries in Africa have reported 44 confirmed cases, more than 1,400 suspected cases, and 66 deaths. In the Western Pacific region, Australia has reported six cases. “Epidemiological investigations are ongoing,” the WHO said.

(2021) Transmission of monkeypox virus through sexual contact – A novel route of infection. The implications for HCWs are that they should be provided with appropriate protective equipment, education, and treatment, when needed, as the MPX virus is a category 3 pathogen. For patient 2, ulcers were observed in the oral region, whereas other symptoms remained in the pubic and genital regions. Patients 1 and 2 were the receptive and insertive partners, respectively, when they had unprotected sex in April 2022. Subsequently, the hospital authorities liaised with UKHSA and the diagnosis was confirmed when the samples tested positive for MPX. Several other cases have been identified in the U.K., wherein individuals were symptomatic before this first individual was identified to have MPX. Journal of Infection. doi:10.1016/j.jinf.2022.05.028 The papules later evolved into painful ulcers. Research has shown that MPX is primarily transmitted through close skin-to-skin contact from active lesions and bodily fluids. Nevertheless, the present MPX outbreak is not typical, as many cases are unrelated to travel. Seven cases of MPX have been reported in the U.K. between 2018 and April 2022.

Mortality rates of 3.6 percent for the West African variant and 10.6 percent for the Central African variant have been reported in endemic regions. The R0 for the West African variant of monkeypox virus may be too low to sustain human-to-human transmission outside of endemic areas. Monkeypox had been a neglected tropical disease until the current outbreak in the developed world. (Its trade name is Jynneos in the U.S., Imvamune in Canada and Imvanex in Europe.) There are two common genetic variants of monkeypox virus: the Central African variant and the West African variant. Monkeypox is a member of a closely related group of viruses in the Orthopoxvirus genus that includes smallpox, cowpox, and camelpox. The ultimate source of infection was found to be imported Gambian rats that transmitted the infection to the prairie dogs. Cases have been exceedingly higher among men who have sex with men, although the virus is not known to be sexually transmitted. The first cluster of human monkeypox infections outside of Africa occurred in the United States in 2003. Secondary infections among unvaccinated close contacts occur in about 12.3 percent household contacts and 3.3 percent of others. Since then, sporadic human cases have occurred in many Central and West African countries, with infections being more common in children and young adults. In fact, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) as of June 2, 2022, monkeypox cases have been reported in 27 different non-endemic countries: United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Canada, United States, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, France, Argentina, Mexico, Morocco, United Arab Emirates, Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Malta, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Australia.

The WHO said the figure is likely an underestimate and considers the global risk level as “moderate.” Most cases are in Europe and the US as well as Latin America. Most of the identified cases have been mild, including fever, headache, and rash concentrated on the face. Meanwhile, biologist Michael Worobey told CNN this new study suggests the outbreak “has been going on for a long time, locally.” It’s a viral zoonosis, with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients. The researchers found an “unexpectedly large number” of changes to the virus’s genetic code since 2017, which could be explained by a lot of undetected spread. Now, a new study suggested the virus could have been spreading “under the radar” for months or even years, with mild symptoms masking the spread.

Labelling monkeypox sexually transmitted diseases / infection will lead to stigmatisation of particular community, feel experts.

“Is it the actual close, skin-to-skin contact, respiratory secretions that are spreading during sexual encounters? Monkeypox is not only infecting a particular population, but its symptoms are also not what has been typically recorded in African nations. But now, lesions are first appearing in the genital or perianal region. The virus appears to have gotten into some particular social networks, and had success spreading via close contact at parties and apparently through sexual contacts. “Based on our current understanding, monkeypox is not an STI. It transmits during sexual relations if there are lesions in the genital area,” he explained. As is being observed across the world, their lesions emerged in the anal and genital area.
