Unwrapping zongzi, the traditional Dragon Boat Festival food (SupChina)

In its most classic form, zongzi is a glutinous rice dumpling, stuffed with either sweet or savory fillings and wrapped in large, flat bamboo leaves.

This year, the student and his parents walked out of the shop with a variety of twenty rice dumplings. While it is possible to acquire both southern and northern zongzi in all areas of Taiwan, loyalty to regional specialties runs deep. While zongzi in northern Taiwan and southern Taiwan both hold the notable tetrahedral shape and are wrapped in large flat bamboo or osmanthus leaves (their greatest difference comes down to the consistency of the rice), southern zongzi tend to be stickier because they are boiled, rather than steamed. The wrapped zongzi is then steamed, and when served warm exudes the soft fragrance of the leaves. The rice of northern zongzi is also sticky, but the grains remain more intact than their southern counterparts. With COVID cases inching up in Taiwan, food markets, malls, and street vendors across the self-ruled island have been eerily quiet as a growing number of residents opt to stay home.

Empowered by the spiritual code with feelings of growth, strength and balance, they have a stronger sense of mission and responsibility to bring the civilization into new prospects. It is also a spiritual code of culture that shapes a person's cultural identity and the civilization of a nation. That was said by many to be the origin of Zongzi and the dragon boat race. The delight from such affective family interaction drives away of agitation brought by the hot summer and enables people to enjoy the advent of a new season. This is especially true of the cosmopolitan and internet savvy youth. The emotions and values embedded in culture stimulates a person's joy and pride in his or her connection with community and nation.

Think Twice Before Saying "Happy Dragon Boat Festival" In Chinese (The Beijinger)

Duānwǔ Jié (端午节,Dragon Boat Festival) has long been a traditional holiday associated with many customs and superstitions in China.

I think the irony is somehow suitable. Xiónghuáng jiǔ is made from fermented cereals and powdered realgar (an orange-red mineral, arsenic sulfide). In ancient times, people believed drinking it during Duānwǔ jié can help kill bugs, or drive away evil spirits. The fillings vary from region to region. Nowadays, it’s common to say Duānwǔ jié kuàilè, but there are those who still follow the tradition of “peace and health”, and say Duānwǔ ān kāng (端午安康,”wishing you peace and health for Dragon Boat Festival”). So we suggest you think twice before saying Duānwǔ jié kuàilè. Beside eating zòngzi (粽子) (sticky rice wrapped in a leaf), there are some more symbols and traditions you might not know about this holiday. I think the irony is somehow suitable.
