Americans are traveling at nearly pre-pandemic levels this holiday weekend, but many found their trips disrupted by flight cancellations and delays.
The current cancellations come as Covid-19 infection and hospitalization rates rise in the United States and immunity from prior infection begins to wane. AAA is forecasting 3 million people will fly over the weekend, an increase of 25% over 2021, as holiday travel nears pre-pandemic levels. The current raft of flight cancellations comes after 2,616 U.S. flights were canceled January 1, a 61% increase over the previous New Year’s Day. The Federal Aviation Administration attributed these cancellations in part to the spread of the coronavirus’ omicron variant, requiring airlines to reduce staffing numbers. Delta Air Lines was the U.S.-based airline with the most cancellations over the weekend so far, with 413 cancellations and 790 delays, followed by Republic Airways with 137 delays and 522 cancellations and Cape Air with 67 cancellations and 84 delays, according to FlightAware. Some 565 flights arriving in or departing from the United States were canceled and 5,204 were delayed Saturday, while 394 were canceled and 2,746 were delayed Sunday, according to flight tracking platform FlightAware. A total of 959 U.S. flights have been canceled in the U.S. over the Memorial Day weekend so far, as bad weather conditions and Covid-19-related staffing shortages interfere with airline operations.

Other carriers, including Alaska Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines have also pared back schedules to better handle disruptions like bad weather and staffing shortages. Delta Air Lines led cancellations, disruptions it attributed to bad weather and "air traffic control actions" on Saturday. Hundreds of flights operated by Republic Airways, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways and American Airlines were also delayed Saturday. Delta canceled 254 mainline flights, or 9% of its Saturday schedule, and 530 were delayed, almost a fifth of its schedule, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware. On Sunday, it canceled 159 flights, or 6%, while its delayed flights totaled 203, or 7% of the schedule.
James H. Harvey III, who retired from the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel, is set to lead the parade's return to D.C..
Finally, in 1993, the commander of the 332nd Fighter Group got the outfit listed as a 1949 winner, Harvey said. “It was a nice airplane,” Harvey said in an interview. “We were the only active unit in the United States Air Force flying P-47 aircraft.” “He was joking, of course.” On Monday, Harvey, now 98, is scheduled to be the grand marshal in Washington’s Memorial Day Parade, which returns in full to Constitution Avenue after a hiatus of two years because of the pandemic. “But I had some doubt in my mind.” And in January, the Air Force unveiled a plaque at Nellis Air Force Base that honors the men of the 332nd for their achievement at the competition: “This is one that we’re especially proud of. “We just really need shared events like this where we can all come together. It was May 1949, outside Las Vegas. He was 25. One F-82 crashed, killing the two men aboard. In 1949, the Air Force held the first gunnery competition at what was then Las Vegas Air Force Base, now Nellis Air Force Base. The best pilots in the Air Force were invited.
Saturday's cancellations were due to bad weather and “air traffic control actions,” Atlanta-based Delta said.
Domestic airline fares for summer are averaging more than $400 for a round trip, 24% higher than this time in 2019, before the pandemic, and a robust 45% higher than a year ago, according to travel-data firm Hopper. Delta Air Lines canceled the most flights among major U.S. airlines, with more than 250 flights, or 9% of its operations, eliminated Saturday. One hundred and sixty Delta flights were canceled by Sunday evening, according to FlightAware. Delta announced on its website on Thursday that from July 1 to Aug. 7, it would reduce service by about 100 daily departures, primarily in parts of the U.S. and Latin America that Delta frequently serves. Saturday’s cancellations were due to bad weather and “air traffic control actions,” Atlanta-based Delta said in an email to The Associated Press, noting it’s trying to cancel flights at least 24 hours in advance of the Memorial Day weekend. About 1,460 flights had been canceled as of 7 p.m. EDT Sunday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. That followed more than 2,300 cancellations Friday and another 1,500 on Saturday. ATLANTA (AP) — Hundreds of flights worldwide were canceled by Sunday evening, adding to the mounting number of scrubbed flights during the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend in the U.S.

Memorial Day is about saluting those who fight the battle on the side that yearns for a freer, more peaceful world once the shooting stops.
Hundreds of thousands of American men and women have perished in giving us and others the opportunity for brighter tomorrows — from the Revolutionary War, the Union troops in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Desert Storm, the War on Terror, and other missions. But, one stigma remained from the sixties — the conflicting concepts of “anti-war” or not. I once heard someone refer to war as “the Devil’s game.” I was proud to share this experience with them, even if I was one of the least. I learned most of the young men in my platoon were capable of great individual courage when the going got tough. I know it is the face of every recruit who I battled through hell and emerged triumphant with on boot camp graduation day. For the next couple of days, nonstop coverage of the tragedy dominated every television station. I weep when I see his face — because I know it is my face. I remember feeling a bit miffed they pre-empted my cartoon shows. We knew, or at least felt pretty sure, about how our fellow travelers in misery would respond when the only options were to stand head-on against the hurricane of unbearable challenge or to wilt. When President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, my second-grade teacher announced it to the class; I think the school might have even turned the clock back to the time of the shooting as a tribute. They learned mine in the first 15 minutes.

Back in the nation's capital, Memorial Day traditions include the observance at Arlington National Cemetery. It is the most famous burial place in America.
One of the lesser-known memorials on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is often called "the temple." In the center, at ground level, is a round pool of water. When the sun is just right, rainbows of color dance in the air. They represent each of the American states and territories, plus the District of Columbia, at the time of the war. The World War II Memorial is built of bronze and granite. Once they find the name, many rub a pencil on paper over the letters to copy it. The winner was Maya Lin, a 21-year-old student at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Just days before Memorial Day, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, DNREC, was still working to repair beaches that were damaged by strong storms in early May. It is a day when Americans honor the men and women who have died fighting in America’s wars. The town also happens to be a favorite summer getaway spot for U.S. President Joe Biden, who is from Delaware. Many will head to the nearest bodies of water or beaches. For most Americans, it also marks the unofficial start of summer.
I visited my father's grave at the veterans cemetery in Windsor the other day. He had been in the Army Air Corps during the second world war.
A group of young people organized a boycott of the parade in protest of the legislator’s ban. –During the 1960s and 70s, Memorial Day became a flashpoint for the Vietnam War. In 1969 a group called “Clergy and Laity Concerned” planned an event at the Torrington town park to memorialize the war’s 33,000 casualties. After living for two months in their tent city, the families were rousted by General Douglas MacArthur, who led troops with bayonets and tear gas to burn the Bonus camp down. Congress had voted to give veterans a bonus, but the payout was not scheduled for another 13 years. Bendell was a Jewish Russian immigrant who had volunteered for the Navy when the U.S. first entered the war. He had been in the Army Air Corps during the second world war.

The last Monday in May in the United States is observed as Memorial Day, a day to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the country’s military.
A prominent journalist of the World War II era complained once about the frequent use of the word “boys” when speaking of U.S. troops in the field.
“The men in the road seemed reluctant to leave. And then he got up and walked away down the road in the moonlight, all alone.” A prominent journalist of the World War II era complained once about the frequent use of the word “boys” when speaking of U.S. troops in the field. “The unburdened mules moved off to their olive orchard,” Pyle wrote. But the term was meant more as an expression of affection and solidarity — “our boys in uniform” — than as a description. In fact, the average age of those who died in the Second World War was about 27, and their numbers did include a good many youths.

Find a way to memorialize this for yourself and your family," Flags of Valor said. I also think of their families' sacrifice to our nation," she said. We will never forget." COSF CEO and Co-Founder Kristina Kaufmann told Newsweek that for some, the meaning of Memorial Day is deeply personal and not a day of celebration, and therefore it isn't appropriate to wish someone a "Happy Memorial Day." The Code of Support Foundation (COSF), a U.S. non-profit organization that works to ensure members of the military, veterans, caregivers and surviving families receive the support they have earned through their service and sacrifice, calls on Americans to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day, and to "seek ways to honor our nation's heroes who died in service to our great nation." While it may seem natural to wish someone a "Happy Memorial Day," Americans remain split over whether it is an appropriate phrase to use to mark the national day of remembrance.

As the son of Navy fighter pilot, I was taught three things at a very early age: 1. To always thank a veteran when you saw him or her; 2.
The free will they fought to protect wasn’t meant for us to use as a tool of mutual destruction. This Memorial Day let’s again honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice by doing the important traditional things like parades, moments of silence, gathering at monuments, and many others. I often speak to people about this necessity of mutual understanding, and it is always received with aggressive agreement. Trust me, I know it’s a challenge these days not to react in ways that focus on our differences and drive us further to our corners. Memorial Day itself would be spent at the Bethlehem Memorial Day parade, an event that seemingly the entire town would attend decked out in red, white, and blue. My father, and other members of Post 146, would spend hours making sure veteran grave markers had American flags at the two cemeteries in town.
On Memorial Day, "poems written by veterans that focus on honoring those who have died may give us a clue" to healing our deep divisions.
These words cannot be just lines or lists; they become, by being memorialized in a black stone, a “mirror,” the reader’s and thus society’s “reflection.” All on the bench are implicated; the names died for us, and, as a result, are us. The words are “names,” which “could be lines / of poems or a grocery list. For the visitor, the memorial becomes “an opened book,” a place where “A word loses its ability to conjure / trapped inside a black mirror.” We can also learn from Brock Jones, an Army veteran who served three tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He named his award-winning book “ Cenotaph,” the name for a tomb to honor those whose graves lie elsewhere. As a result, their image in the stone becomes a living memorial. Yet even with such a positive affirming metaphor, the speaker’s mind and heart are not fully at ease. “I go down the 58,022 names, / half-expecting to find / my own in letters like smoke. The holiday emerged from the Civil War as a celebration almost exclusively for veterans of the Union Army to remember those who had died. They address language’s inability to capture or express loss linked to memories of war. The concluding line relieves that worry – the names are not being erased. / He’s lost his right arm / inside the stone. It surfaces daily as communities such as New Orleans wrestle with whether or not to keep memorial statues honoring Confederate leaders like Robert E. Lee. Editor’s note: The Lee statue was removed in May 2017, but the debate over removing Confederate influence continues.

If members of North Carolina’s congressional delegation are serious about honoring veterans, they should sign on as co-sponsors to this important bill right away. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who died in service to their country. Indeed, as a new report from the National Consumer Law Center and other consumer advocacy groups makes clear, there are some very important ways in which current federal law allows veterans not just to be dishonored, but affirmatively targeted for exploitation.
If the price of “liberty" is that we must tolerate the periodic massacre of schoolchildren, that's OK with the Republican Party of Wisconsin.

In a 2019 poll, only 55% of those surveyed could even correctly describe the day as being in honor of those who died serving our nation in military uniform. Others had today mixed up with Veterans Day, saying it’s for all military veterans (27%); believe it honors those currently serving (5%) or that it just marks the start of summer (3%). Since being sworn in as a member of the United States House of Representatives, it has been a key passion and priority of mine to care for the families left behind by our fallen heroes and my fallen brothers and sisters. As a nation, I ask that we reflect upon those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, pay tribute to the fallen and never forget the families they left behind. This article is an Op-Ed and as such, the opinions expressed are those of the authors. Deeply emotional moments in my career involving the fallen and their families often play out in my memories as I reflect upon the true meaning of Memorial Day. Several years ago, when I was freshly promoted to brigadier general in the Air Force, one of my first duties was to serve as the accident investigation board president for an Air Force MC-12 reconnaissance aircraft that crashed on a mission over Afghanistan, horrifically killing all four crewmembers on board. As I reflect upon those our country has lost and those brave warriors whom I personally knew, I am reminded of the importance of not only honoring and remembering their service and sacrifice, but honoring them through action, by caring for the families they leave behind. Memorial Day is one of the most sacred days of the year for our nation — and for me personally.

Today is perhaps the most somber of all American holidays. Memorial Day is a time to remember our war dead, those in the armed services who gave their lives ...
An official day dedicated to this tragic reality will remind us that firearms take a daily toll in this country, and perhaps move Americans to action. Consider the number of people murdered by gunmen at houses of worship over the past several years. Their names should be before us, observed on a specified day each year, when we remember them and the need to address this enemy in our midst. And a 2014 study by UC San Francisco found that people with ready access to firearms were three times more likely to die by suicide. Memorial Day is a time to remember our war dead, those in the armed services who gave their lives to protect our nation. Dedicating a day to honor these veterans and mourn their deaths helps remind us of the terrible toll of war.

A bomb, detonated by a member of ISIS K, killed the service members and at least 170 Afghans. Forty-five U.S. troops were wounded. “You never think you’re going to bury a child or a grandchild. Marines from Merola's unit visit regularly from Camp Pendleton, including some who were wounded in the blast. She comes to the cemetery five to six times a week. I know I'll never be the same person I was,” Rex said. “I pretty much knew that morning," Rex said. Most were from the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, stationed at Camp Pendleton. We honor our dead best when we honor what they fought for by embracing the obligations to be the strong America that Americans need. The brutal truth of human imperfection, as the war against Ukraine so cruelly reminds us, is that there will always be more to remember on Memorial Days in parts of the real world. Together their economies, military capabilities, nuclear threats and capacity to endanger U.S. interests are arguably on scale greater than that posed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. We live in a world where dangerous nations refuse to honor that norm. Yes, this is the day to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country. This Memorial Day happens in time of war, as another nation battles for its freedom thousands of miles away, fighting back against naked aggression.

One way to begin is to adopt the Ideological Turing test to every issue upon which we wish to speak. This test is easy, and rests upon Alan Turing's test for ...
It lessens our civic comity and is unworthy of the great personal sacrifice so many made to ensure our ability to speak and write freely. The goal of this is to change minds, rather than diminish or belittle them. James Madison was correct in arguing that the multiplicity of factions is important to ensuring there is not tyranny of a majority. One final benefit of the Ideological Turing Test is that it should cause us to hold fewer opinions, or at least facilitate the sharing of them. You might even find that the other side of a debate is filled with scoundrels whose interests are narrow and ugly. I know that when I err, it is almost always because I did not have command of facts. Of course, you might find the other side is wrong, employs bad data, and lacks discernment of critical facts. In fully understanding the other side of a debate, you will inevitably find weaknesses in your own side. Nor is it surprising that so many men and women continue to place themselves in harm’s way. We asked them to suffer deprivation and pain and ultimately asked that they relinquish all of their tomorrows for us. All of this is far, far more difficult than simply sharing an opinion. This test is easy, and rests upon Alan Turing’s test for computer intelligence.
