Super Striker of the Season – Jos Buttler Opener Gill remained unbeaten on 45, sealing Gujarat’s victory with a six and with 11 balls to spare. IPL 2022 Award Winners: Debutants Gujarat Titans were crowned the Indian Premier League (IPL) champions on Sunday after they beat Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in the final in Ahmedabad. Opting to bat first, 2008 champions Rajasthan never got going and posted a below-par 130-9 with Jos Buttler, this IPL’s leading scorer, top scoring for them with a rather subdued 39.

Hardik Pandya leads Gujarat Titans to IPL triumph in their first season (The Guardian)

Rajasthan Royals batted first and were restricted to 130 for nine and Gujarat chased it down, scoring 133, but Jos Buttler finished as the IPL's top scorer.

“Batting comes first to me, it’s been always close to my heart,” player-of-the-match Pandya said after hitting three boundaries and a six in his knock at No 4. But Gujarat’s depth in the middle-order batting — the team topped the table with 20 points from 10 wins during the league stage — saw them home. We believe quality bowlers win you the tournament, so we invested in them ... but there is a lot to learn.” Pandya had Shimron Hetmyer (11) caught off his own bowling in the last ball of a terrific four-over spell. Jos Buttler made only 39 off 35 balls but still finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 863 runs, and Samson scored 14. Pandya grabbed three for17 with impeccable medium-fast bowling to restrict Rajasthan to 130 for nine after Sanju Samson won the toss and chose to bat.

Hardik answers questions with one of the most influential all-round ... (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Questions around his fitness, his bowling, his captaincy, his new No. 4 spot, have all been answered and how.

The next ball was Hardik's last of the day, and it was back to basics: into the pitch, while angling the ball across the left-hand batter. He had performed a steadying role at No. 4 all through the season; all that remained was to do it one last time. Before this season, he hadn't had too many opportunities to begin a T20 innings with more than 10 overs remaining, but at Titans, he has adopted that role out of necessity and relished it. That sequence included a pair of offcutters that gripped and beat the outside edge, and a 143kph bouncer that left Padikkal late on a hook. A bit of extra bounce, possibly, and a bit of nibble off the seam - neither in any way pronounced - caused him to edge behind. One ball later, Hardik bowled his one full ball of the evening, and Hetmyer opened his bat face to steer it between wicketkeeper and short third man. Starting the 15th over having given away only seven runs in his first three, Hardik suffered his only dose of punishment on the day. By then, Hardik had tormented Devdutt Padikkal as well, bowling seven balls to the left-hand batter and conceding only a leg bye. "[At the] right time, I wanted to show what I have worked hard for, and today was the day, from my bowling point of view, I saved the best for the best [stage]," Hardik said during the post-match presentation. The ball kicked up awkwardly, and Samson skewed it to backward point. And oh, Hardik had never captained a team at senior level; how would he lead this group of players who had never played with each other before? He had been appointed captain of a new IPL franchise, Gujarat Titans, and it was still not known what role he would play for them.

Born to win: On Gujarat Titans' maiden win at IPL 2022 (The Hindu)

Despite the drop in TRPs, the IPL seems set for a long run with top-notch cricket.

Royals last won the title during the 2008 inaugural edition and the latest comeback augurs well for Samson’s men. However, sport does not entirely ride on emotion and Royals stumbled at the last step. Often weighed down by injuries and the comparisons with Kapil Dev, Pandya finally turned the corner, leading Titans with finesse, scoring brisk runs and prising out valuable wickets like he did in the final — scalping Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer and Royals’ skipper Sanju Samson. Through the IPL’s long summer, Titans always had consistent performers chipping in without fail.

IPL 2022: Rashid Khan and the quiet knockout punch (Scroll.in)

It has taken a while but Rashid Khan, arguably the greatest T20 bowler of this generation, finally has an IPL trophy to call his own.

0 0 0 0 Over the course of the season, he also revealed that he had to adjust his lengths after certain players on batting-friendly pitches decoded how to take him on. 0 Even as he finessed his focus on building that pressure on one end, he hadn’t completely given up the wicket-taking role. 0 In fact, he was making a conscious effort to be a kind of enforcer in the GT bowling line-up. He finished the match with impressive bowling figures 4-0-18-1 at just 4.50 runs per over. And that is exactly what was on display with the Royals’ batters in the final. One of the biggest takeaways from the GT triumph was that this was the Afghan star’s first-ever T20 title, in flesh and blood.

Owned by leading private equity firm CVC Capital, the victorious Ahmedabad team has found instant support from a sizeable local fan base.

A lot of the team’s social media messaging was done in Gujarati. ‘Aava de’ (bring it on) was used as a hash tag. “On the cricketing front, a free hand was given to (director of cricket operations) Vikram Solanki, (coach) Ashish Nehra, (mentor) Gary Kirsten and others. “We did not have a name when the mega auction took place. That’s the best marketing you can do to build a brand,” Wheeler had said. “But they do have a medium to long-term view—a 10-12-year investment horizon.” For the players, after the celebration on the podium, medals around the neck and joyous moments with the trophy comes the embrace from the owner.
