Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has downplayed talk of wanting revenge against Real Madrid in Saturday's Champions League final.

"We have the experience this season to focus on what's next. [It was] hard to take at the time but it's behind us." The only thing we think about is how to prepare for the game, how to play the game. It's long in the past." "The only issue is if that is the only motivation but that is not the case in most cases -- it's normal that Mo wants to put things right. It's a team where the manager can win it the fourth time.

How the Champions League Final Will Be Won (CalBearsMaven)

It's Liverpool's press and ability to control vs Real Madrid's penchant for capitalizing on chaos and brilliant moments. So which one will prove superior?

That is not to say the high defensive line is not a risk. That is where Madrid’s three previous opponents have faltered, but a Liverpool side whose style is still derived of Jürgen Klopp’s original heavy-metal template should be better equipped than them to handle the chaos. What is vital, and what PSG, Chelsea and City failed to do to a decisive extent, is to take advantage of those periods. He is a supreme crosser of the ball, registering 12 assists in the league this season. A Kroos pass from deep also led to the second, scored by Marco Asensio, as the ball bounced across the box off Trent Alexander-Arnold. There may be a sense of foreboding: How can Liverpool prevent its right flank from being exposed? You can’t keep relying on Luka Modrić to produce a pass of the mesmerizing brilliance that brought the equalizer against Chelsea. You can’t assume that Karim Benzema will always gobble up every half-chance.

Champions League Final: Liverpool Against Real Madrid Shows ... (Forbes)

The clash between the European heavyweights is both an exciting match-up and a sign of the times.

However, some reports are not focusing on Salah. Instead, they are talking up the battle between Real’s Vinícius Júnior and Reds full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. The former is rapid, meaning Alexander-Arnold will need to look over his shoulder when supporting the attack. The teams’ run to the final has depended on various individuals peaking in the right moments. Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was unstoppable during the first half of the season, and just as his goals have dried up slightly, Sadio Mané and Luis Díaz have stepped up in the final third. They have never won the Champions League. With exceptional players and a world-class coach—especially in City’s case—they can. Real and Liverpool have done so 19 times between them, and the ticker will strike 20 when either Marcelo or Jordan Henderson—possible captains on the night—lifts the prize at the Stade de France. Factoring in the amount PSG could have received from Real, alongside its longer-term expenditure to keep Mbappé, holding onto its brightest young player has meant an approximate $400 million hit, the New York Times reasoned.

Champions League Final Preview: Liverpool vs. Real Madrid (The New York Times)

Real Madrid and Liverpool will square off on Saturday in Paris. The game is a rematch of the 2018 final.

Real Madrid is in the final for the fifth time since 2014; in each of its previous four visits since 2014, its fans will quickly point out, it has left with the trophy. In that sense, Liverpool is probably the toughest test Madrid could have faced in the final. But the nature of the way the team plays, conjuring those irresistible surges, is not. Real Madrid has been able to snatch victory from defeat against three of the best-equipped opponents in Europe because its players believe in the club’s almost mystical refusal to wilt. But Madrid has been helped by the fact that the opposition are inclined to believe it, too. The final also was the first time that Pérez and the UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, met in person since a Pérez-led effort to create a European Super League failed spectacularly just over a year ago. Instead, the tournament organizer, UEFA, and city officials hosted fans of the rival teams in separate venues closer to the city limits. Yes, in a way. To win its seventh European Cup on Saturday, Liverpool will have to break that sequence. Paris was easily able to absorb the influx of fans, though in its usual tourist hot spots there was little sign that soccer’s biggest game was in town. Paris St.-Germain almost looked as if it were waiting for the wave to crash. Real Madrid, which won the Spanish league this year, is chasing a record 14th Champions League title after narrowly dodging elimination in the semifinals.

Champions League Final: Live Updates Ahead of Kickoff (The New York Times)

The Spanish champion is seeking its record 14th European title on Saturday in Paris. Liverpool, the Premier League runner-up, is chasing its seventh.

Liverpool has, of course, be in this spot before: It lost to Real Madrid in the 2018 final. A favorable knockout-round draw and a helpful upset — not to mention playing some of the best soccer in the club’s history — meant that its opponents were swatted aside relative ease. Real Madrid faced all the so-called new money clubs in the knockout rounds, and in doing so came face to face with elimination multiple times. It has now played a quarter of the all the finals that have been contested, in fact, including — after Saturday — five of the past nine. As of 15.00 on 26.05 until 18.00 on Sunday 29.05 it is prohibited to wear any football club colours in the area of the Champs Elysees. This includes scarves, hats, displaying banners etc. That might have been related to a warning issued to supporters of both teams that they risked fines of 135 euros (almost $150) if they turned up wearing club colors in places like the Eiffel Tower or the Champs Élysées, the grand avenue that is typically flooded with visitors. Real Madrid is in the final for the fifth time since 2014; in each of its previous four visits since then, its fans will quickly point out, it has left town with the trophy. Chelsea, Manchester City and P.S.G. could not disabuse Real Madrid of its abiding belief in its own agency; Ancelotti and his players have plenty of reason to be confident that Liverpool will go the same way. Europe and the rest of the world. Ordinarily, at a club as proud and demanding as Real Madrid, those twin embarrassments would be enough to spark some sense of mutiny. Real was imperious in the first leg against Chelsea. That aside, it has had to weather fairly consistent storms. Just give Real Madrid the trophy and save everyone the bother.

Furthermore, Liverpool have not beaten Real in the Champions League since 2008-09 when they thrashed them 5-0 on aggregate in the round of 16. Another win for the Spanish giants tonight would see them claim the cup for a fifth time in nine years. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga last season to qualify for the Champions League. It topped Group D with five wins and one loss. It won all six of its Champions League group-stage matches and then beat Inter Milan, Benfica and Villarreal in the knockout round to advance to the final. (Scottish club Celtic in 1966-67 became the only team to achieve a quadruple of major European trophies). Liverpool won a pair of domestic cup competitions earlier this season. Twelve minutes later, after a Sadio Mané equalizer, Gareth Bale angled an acrobatic bicycle kick over Karius, who again became the focus of fan ire when Bale drilled a long shot through his hands to score 20 minutes later. The governing body initially described the reason for the delay to late-arriving fans, but updated the attribution as a “security issue.” Thiago made his return after sustaining an injury during Sunday’s Premier League finale. Its best chance came around the 20th minute when Sadio Mané cut inside and unleashed a shot that hit the near post as Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois scrambled to recover. Champions League final delayed as Liverpool fans report chaos ... (The Guardian)

Kick-off in Saturday's Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid in Paris had to be delayed by 36 minutes amid safety concerns.

At the Euro 2020 final last July, thousands of fans surged past security at Wembley and there was fighting in the concourses. In Spanish “security problems” were blamed but the English announcement was clear in pointing the finger at “the late arrival” of fans. At about 8.45pm local time, by which point the Real Madrid end of the stadium was full but there were still swathes of empty seats in the Liverpool end, an announcement was made that kick-off would be delayed. The Associated Press journalist Rob Harris reported that Uefa staff had intervened to prevent security personnel from going after media to stop them from filming as tear gas was deployed. There was footage of some, presumably without tickets, climbing the fence and running past stewards, but the vast majority remained in the overcrowded queues for security checks. There were chaotic scenes as security checks led to bottlenecks and police deployed pepper spray or tear gas, again raising serious questions about Uefa’s organisation of a major event.

And the result Saturday left Liverpool without their seventh European Cup. So how can we judge a season that promised so much, yet ultimately ended with disappointment? And he was unmarked because Alexander-Arnold lost his man at the key moment, allowing the 21-year-old to find the space to claim the cross and score past Alisson. Alexander-Arnold's defensive shortcomings are the main reason why he is no longer Gareth Southgate's first-choice right-back with England, but Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp remains fiercely loyal to his player because of the attacking qualities he brings to the team. Courtois continued his heroic performance in the second half, before and after his team's breakthrough goal, to seal a compelling case for the man of the match award. And Ancelotti now moves ahead of Liverpool's Bob Paisley and Real's Zinedine Zidane as the most successful coach by winning it a fourth time. But while Vinicius' goal was the decisive moment, Real owed their victory to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who made a succession of crucial saves throughout the game.

Why was the Champions League final delayed 36 minutes ... (The Athletic)

The Champions League final was delayed by 36 minutes — with Liverpool fans stuck outside the stadium in the build-up to the game. The game was originally...

It is understood that fans were left queueing outside the ground for more than two and a half hours. Funnelled into an area with a police van and there was almost a crush. I've been to five Champions League finals but I've never experienced anything like this. Liverpool fan Peter Clarkson, who has been an Anfield season ticket holder for over 20 years, told The Athletic: "I've never been so scared in my life. Further footage showed children suffering from the impact of pepper spray. The match was then delayed again, before a further six-minute delay until 8.36pm.

Real Madrid win Champions League as Vinícius Júnior strike sinks ... (The Guardian)

Real Madrid won their 14th European Cup after Vinícius Júnior's second-half finish secured a 1-0 win over Liverpool.

Casemiro fluffed a square pass with Vinícius and Benzema open in front of goal but Real – and Courtois – would keep the back door bolted. When Benzema jabbed to the left, it was the prompt for Alisson and Ibrahima Konaté to get into a tangle. The ball would run in front of the line but it would not spin over it. Perhaps it was because of the mental and physical drain of a season like few others, which also featured an unsuccessful fight to the finish with Manchester City for the Premier League title. Salah’s touch to kill a high ball in the 82nd minute was sublime and, when he shifted inside and shot, the hopes of the Liverpool support soared. Salah had declared himself to be motivated by the loss to Real in the 2018 final, when he was thrown out of the action by Sergio Ramos. There would be no revenge storyline.

Why the Champions League Final Was Delayed (The New York Times)

European soccer's showcase game was delayed more than 30 minutes after overcrowding at the stadium gates led to clashes between fans and the police.

The security official said that “it was a police decision” to close entry and exit points. Tommy Smith, a Liverpool fan who had traveled to Paris from Ireland with a group of friends and family, said his group had arrived two hours before the scheduled kickoff and found that there were few entrances where fans could present their tickets. “Thank you to the very many police forces mobilized this evening in this difficult context.” “Thousands of British ‘supporters’ without tickets or with counterfeit tickets forced entry and sometimes assaulted the stewards,” he wrote. One group of V.I.P.s, delayed because of a problem scanning the Q.R. codes attached to their tickets, scaled a fence in an effort to get to their seats. The confusion, and rising anger, created a potentially dangerous situation in which French police officers, wearing helmets and carrying shields, used canisters of what UEFA, which runs the Champions League, said was tear gas to keep the surging crowds at bay.

Madrid's Champions League Inevitability Turns Out to Be Very Real (Sports Illustrated)

Plenty should've prevented Real Madrid from winning another European title, but the club's ability to navigate the biggest stage is an immeasurable ...

That is the challenge the Champions League presents: it is seductive and brilliant and yet it has destroyed football as the sport it used to be. La Liga’s double winners had an aging squad and may have missed out on signing Kylian Mbappé, the player they had decided was the one to take them into the future. At that point, policed waived the first control point easing access, which was probably the only decision it could take, but the bigger question was how the buildup had been allowed to occur in the first place. Madrid and Liverpool are two of the grandees of the game, so perhaps it doesn’t matter that this was the third time they have met in the final, but it does matter that there has been no finalist from outside Europe’s Big Five leagues (La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1) since Porto in 2004. The problems were largely at the northwestern corner of the stadium, where Liverpool fans entered, and it was noticeable half an hour before kickoff how much more full the Madrid end of the ground was. And when Liverpool did begin to find some momentum in the second half, there was Thibaut Courtois, who twice denied Mohamed Salah with stunning saves as part of a record nine-save effort. Either way, it looked dreadful as the ball skidded across the box and the young Brazilian was untended to turn the ball over the line. If he is not the best in one-on-one battles, it is forgivable because he is so good on the ball. The danger as Madrid advanced and worked the ball to Valverde on the right was always Vinícius at the back post. It was a fine cross and a fine run, but from a Liverpool point of view, the opening goal was far too straightforward. Passes began to go astray, shots flew wide and there was one absurd moment that seemed to have led to the opening goal as Alisson and Ibrahima Konaté apparently became incapable of the most basic acts and ended up lying on the ground, the ball bouncing between them before Karim Benzema fired in, only to be denied by an offside flag. PARIS — The numbers, and not for the first time in this remarkable run, favored the opposition.
