A new trailer has dropped for Thor: Love and Thunder, and it gives the first official look at Gorr the God Butcher.

The various black and white segments featuring the character are a really creative choice. The best part of it all? Not only that, but it failed to give a proper look at the movie's main villain: Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher.

Tonight's official trailer gives us our first look at Christian Bale's much-anticipated turn as baddie Gorr the God Butcher.

Mixing mythologies, the new footage includes a trek to Olympus where we see Zeus (Russell Crowe) addressing an adoring crowd, thunderbolt in hand, Tessa Thompson’s King Valkyrie fighting Gorr with a thunderbolt in her hand, a bound Thor being stripped — a little too thoroughly — of his cloak by Zeus and finally the Odin’s son wilding Stormbreaker, the mighty axe with a handle made from Groot’s arm. The first “official trailer” for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder — not to be confused with the teaser that dropped a little over a month ago — debuted tonight during the NBA Eastern Conference Finals on ESPN. There’s also the obligatory transformation “from dad bod to God bod” as Thor gets back into action after his pizza and beer phase.

Christian Bale’s version of Gorr the God Butcher certainly isn’t lacking in the creepiness factor, and while his appearance isn’t quite in line with how Gorr is depicted in the comics, he does boast the same chalk-white skin and wields a powerful sword for his deity-hunting. What’s especially intriguing to me though is this black and white realm where Thor, Janes Foster and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie will fight Gorr in Thor: Love and Thunder. Is this simply a stylistic shooting choice from director Taika Waititi (who’s also reprising Korg), or is this Gorr’s home turf where things native to it look so much bleaker? When we last saw Thor in Avengers: Endgame, he was leaving Earth with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and they’ll be around for a bit in Thor: Love and Thunder. However, nowadays Chris Hemsworth’s Thor would rather use his hands for peace rather than battle, so he’s not keen on swinging Stormbreaker around.

Thor: Love and Thunder's first official trailer finally unveiled the villain.

"I TAKE EVERYTHING I SAID BACK!!! GORR LOOKS SO MENACING!!!!! To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjölnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late. In the newly released trailer, fans will see Thor call on the Gods of Olympus for help, led by Zeus (Russell Crowe), after Gorr brings the titular hero out of retirement when the God Butcher attempts to live up to his name. The hero would have had a lot of time to think about his past life, including his love for Jane who he hasn’t seen in almost a decade. Korg (Taika Waititi) and King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) are seen behind our two lead heroes with the latter riding their signature Pegasus. The Viking ship being pulled by two flying goats behind our ragtag team of gods is a nice touch as well. In the fast-approaching movie, Thor will go on a journey of self-discovery and will be retired when we meet up with him at the beginning of the film. The only time we see Gorr in color is in a scene clearly depicting the origins of his vendetta. Marvel released a teaser last month that focused on Thor getting his "god bod" back and embarking on the aforementioned journey of self-discovery. In the trailer, we briefly see Gorr emerging from what appears to be swirls of black tendrils, but he is clad in deathly white elsewhere—an entirely suitable look given his sworn mission. After snagging the dark god Knull's sword, he became the God Butcher until Thor defeated him. (The Internet was abuzz when set photos of Portman leaked in March 2021, showing just how much muscle the diminutive actress had gained for the role.)
