Rafael Nadal Is the French Open's Man of Mystery (The New York Times)

He was unbeatable at the start of the year, then could hardly finish a match in the run-up to the French Open because of an injury. Which version of the ...

And after just a few weeks of preparation and a single tournament, Nadal won the Australian Open in January, showing the world once more that counting him out is a terrible idea. Also, he said that the results from the last two months mattered more than titles won a long time ago. “Things can change quick,” Nadal said, though neither he nor anyone else can say with any certainty that they will. “It’s something that we haven’t seen for sure in a long time.” Mueller-Weiss Syndrome, the degenerative foot condition that Nadal has had since childhood, prevented him from playing for most of the rest of the year. It has been a long time since Nadal showed up in Paris and this tournament was not his to lose. Nadal is 105-3 at Roland Garros. He has won 13 singles titles, the first coming half a lifetime ago, in 2005. He embarrassed Djokovic, 6-0, 6-2, 7-5, in the final. Nine months later, though, Djokovic got revenge, breaking Nadal’s spirit and his body during an epic four-set semifinal on his way to the championship. He is the only player in the field with a 9-foot silver statue on these grounds. His knees are often on the edge of balky. Which version of the 13-time champion of this tournament will show up?

Dominic Thiem and Ons Jabeur slip to first-round defeats in French ... (The Guardian)

Dominic Thiem was easily beaten by Bolivia's Hugo Dellien in the French Open first round, while in the women's event Ons Jabeur became the first major ...

“The key is just to continue being patient, work on the stuff which is not working and then it will come back, but it will take time,” he said. At times he snapped forehands well long early in the point and other times he set up short balls only to miss the easiest shot of the rally. As he fell meekly to Dellien, the 87th-ranked Bolivian clay courter put an arm around Thiem and gave him some supportive words at the net. Since returning from a nine-month injury layoff due to a right wrist injury and various complications, Thiem has now lost all of his seven matches back, winning just two sets between them. Just two hours into the tournament on Sunday afternoon, Thiem suffered a disappointing and at times hard to watch first-round defeat to Hugo Dellien of Bolivia, who easily beat him 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. There was once a time, not very long ago at all, when Dominic Thiem was better placed than anyone else to emerge as the next new champion on these grounds.

He would be the first teenage man to win a major since Nadal’s first conquest in Paris in 2005. Then there’s Alcaraz, who is the same age as Nadal was when Nadal won his first French Open. Alcaraz won his last two tournaments, including beating Nadal and Djokovic on back-to-back days on May 6-7. The 35-year-old Spaniard is bidding to break 1972 French Open champion Andres Gimeno‘s record as the oldest singles champion in Paris. But he most overcome persistent foot pain that impacted his lead-up, which for the first time since 2015 included no titles in the early spring clay-court season.

His last victory came in Rome just over a year ago. Sunday's victory was her 10th top ten win at a Slam. French Open 2022, Day 1: Dominic Thiem, Garbine Muguruza Out ... (Outlook India)

Dominic Thiem, a 28-year-old Austrian once ranked No. 3 but now No. 194, was 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 by Bolivian Hugo Dellien.

"Today, he wasn't at his top level of the past, but I still needed to beat him," Dellien said. That initial set ended with Thiem putting a forehand into the net, followed by a backhand into the net. On the very first point, which lasted 24 strokes, Thiem landed a backhand passing shot in the net and shook his head. But from the get-go, he was able to hold his own in lengthy baseline exchanges. On the sixth point, a forehand return sailed well long. On the next, he tried a drop shot that floated wide. After lamenting his forehand, his backhand and a too-low first-serve percentage, Thiem got to the bigger issue: "Sometimes, I do really stupid decisions during the rally, drop shots or down-the-line (groundstrokes) at the wrong moment. ... Then, for example, there was one game today where I did four or five forehand return mistakes in a row, where I'm thinking, What the heck is happening?'" Avoiding that sort of result was the men's No. 9 seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime, who took care of two missing items on his resume in one afternoon: He picked up a French Open victory for the first time in three tries and he won a match after dropping the opening two sets. Jabeur, a Tunisian who is the first Arab woman to win a WTA title and first to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal, acknowledged: “I was expecting myself to go far in this tournament." Given Thiem's troubles — sure, he was the runner-up to Rafael Nadal in Paris in 2018 and 2019, and to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open in 2020, but his last victory came in May 2021 — there were other results that probably were more surprising. It all used to come so easily for Dominic Thiem on a tennis court — his powerful forehand, his elegant backhand, his hit-which-shot-when calculations, all fine-tuned to the point of a title at the U.S. Open and three other Grand Slam final appearances, including two at Roland Garros. Jason Kubler: Australia's third tennis Special K breaks through at ... (The Guardian)

The post-Ash Barty era would have started on a bleak note had it not been for the injury-prone baseliner's maiden win in Paris.

The shock was not that he won the tournament but more that his knee withstood the rigours of playing on what is effectively trumped-up concrete. The Brisbane resident was the world’s top-ranked junior at the age of 16. Kubler could not say afterwards how many times he has attempted to return to the court. It is a good thing he did, for the post-Ash Barty era in grand slams would have started on a very bleak note otherwise given the other four Australians in action on day one exited early. When it comes to the Special Ks of Australian tennis, Kubler has been very much the third billing behind Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis throughout a testing senior career. Well over a decade after matching the junior deeds of 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal, Jason Kubler finally broke through for his first ever win at Roland Garros.
