One major reason people are angry over Mr Wickremesinghe's return has been his perceived closeness to the Rajapaksa family despite being in opposition. He first served as prime minister from 1993 to 1994. People are furious because the cost of living has become unaffordable, and nine people have lost their lives in the unrest. Asked whether there was a possible solution, he replied, "Absolutely." He told the BBC he had been "out of the loop" when it came to intelligence warnings ahead of the attacks. He was first elected to parliament in 1977 and quickly moved up the party ladder after Ranasinghe Pramadasa was elected president in 1989.
Wickremesinghe returns for a sixth term as Sri Lanka PM with the country mired in political and economic crises.
This led to a chaotic and cascading effect on Sri Lanka’s economy, culminating with the country running out of foreign reserves and Wickremesinghe being requested by President Rajapaksa to take over the reins of the government. The move, which led to Mahinda Rajapaksa returning as prime minister for 52 days, was decried by critics as a constitutional coup. Young Wickremesinghe became the deputy foreign minister and a short while later shifted to a newly created post as minister of youth affairs and employment. Once again, he became the leader of the opposition and has not run for the presidency since. When Wickremesinghe contested the presidency in 2005 he narrowly lost to Mahinda Rajapaksa, with a deficit of approximately 150,000 votes. He was accused of cronyism during his tenure and failing to prosecute members of the previous Rajapaksa regime, members of which had been accused of graft, kickbacks and siphoning off public finances. A key accused in the multi-million dollar scam was the central bank chief at the time, Arjuna Mahendran, who was Ranil Wickremesinghe's schoolmate and choice for the job. He was nonetheless sworn in as prime minister again in 2015 after the election defeat of president Mahinda Rajapaksa after the opposition rallied behind him as a unity candidate against the authoritarian leader. Conflict with the president saw him sacked before his term was over, and he spent the next decade in the political wilderness. But Ranil Wickremesinghe once told AFP he would have likely pursued a career as a journalist, had the government of the day not nationalised his family's newspaper business in 1973. Nevertheless, the main challenge for Ranil Wickremesinghe as the PM will be to win the confidence of the people and the opposition political parties. At a time when the country’s foreign reserves has declined to US$ 25 million, and when the country needs to make tough economic decisions, the single most prerequisite for Sri Lanka is to come out of the political stalemate by forming an all-party consensus government led by a leader who enjoys the trust of the people. To fulfill these demands, he requires the support of the President, the support of opposition political parties, and his own political will to give heed to the people’s wishes. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s unconditional acceptance of the President’s call for the formation of an interim government ignoring people’s wishes, therefore, has been criticised by the main opposition political parties, religious leaders, and the general public. Since the discussion on the formation of an interim government led by a consensus political leader began in April this year, no one has for once proposed the name of Ranil Wickremesinghe as a preferred candidate to lead an interim government. Media reports so far suggest that it will not be possible for him to form an all-party consensus government even if he manages to get the support of the required 113 members to prove a majority in the parliament.
