Follow all the build-up to the big match as Liverpool meet Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

‘Yeah, I think I of course want to be on the pitch, and recently with the limited times that I have had, I have been trying to make as big of an impact as I can. One of the cliches used around the cup is that it gives a chance for ‘unfashionable teams’ to capture the public imagination. In the mid-60s, Liverpool and Chelsea were the most fashionable sides in the game.” It has been a source of frustration, most of all to his father, who took to social media to complain about how his son is not used more. Follow live coverage of Chelsea vs Liverpool in the 2022 FA Cup final, below: For much of the past two decades there have been attempts to manufacture a rivalry between the clubs that goes beyond the natural levels of antagonism. A modern rivalry, steeped in FA Cup history. Chelsea will also be desperate to avoid becoming the first team in FA Cup history to lose three consecutive finals, after they were beaten by Leicester and Arsenal in 2021 and 2020 respectively. Chelsea cruised through their opening encounter, with Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Romelu Lukaku and Andreas Christensen all on target in the first half. It remains a possibility for Jurgen Klopp’s side, even if Manchester City are closing in on the Premier League title, but Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel will be out for revenge as they aim to win the competition for the ninth time. Kepa Arrizabalaga was the extra-time hero for Chelsea, saving Ryan Hardie’s spot-kick to sneak the Blues through without the need for a shoot-out. The Blues had no real pressure dealing with Middlesbrough, however, and progressed to the last four.

Petr Cech played 5,655 minutes that season, while Branislav Ivanovic managed 4,991 – and still had enough in the tank to score the winner against Benfica in the Europa League final. Never mind Eurovision, Chelsea fans can enjoy double vision over the next few days. Despite being the nominal home team at Wembley, Chelsea will wear the yellow kit for the 12th time this season. When Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup, it was the third cup in 229 days to be won under Thomas Tuchel, the second quickest time to such a haul by any Blues coach after Gianluca Vialli’s 153-day spree in 1998. Chelsea have visited the new Wembley stadium three times more than Liverpool, although both clubs will be making their 41st appearance at all incarnations of the national stadium as a neutral venue this weekend. The Senegalese, remember, was thwarted by a sensational double save from his international teammate Edou Mendy in the Carabao Cup final. The Chelsea Women stars earned their stripes by clinching the Women’s Super League again last weekend. Injury ruled the Scot out of the Conti Cup final, which the Mancunians won 3-1. In fact it was the perfect night but for Dan James’ red-card tackle, one straight out of the brutal 1970 final playbook. From being out of the side, Romelu Lukaku can take considerable momentum to Wembley, linking well with deeper-lying forwards Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic, dominating centre-backs and notching three times in two games. Chelsea will be out to make sure Saturday is third time lucky. Last night’s north London derby result, which went the way of Tottenham, means one more league win will confirm third place and Champions League football next season Stamford Bridge. One point should be enough for fourth given our goal difference.

Naby Keita has shaken off a knock to take part in training ahead of Saturday's clash with Chelsea.

Reds the world over will hope that changes on Saturday. While the 27-year-old has managed four goals and three assists in his 36 outings this season in all competitions—the most appearances of his five seasons as a Red—he has had no goal involvements in England’s foremost cup competition to this point. It was his 47th appearance of the season in the 2-1 league win over Aston Villa.

Chelsea press conference LIVE: Thomas Tuchel on Liverpool, FA ... (Football.London)

Chelsea take on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in the FA Cup final at Wembley tomorrow and will be looking to claim trophy for the first time since 2018.

It's a big achievement to be in the finals and there has to be a loser in these finals. It's his right and we will talk to anybody and evaluate the situation of any player including Romelu. So we stepped in and bought the tickets for them. He is keen t make it and hopefully he makes it to training 100%. There is a special momentum you have to catch and a bit of luck. It was a reduced training session because of a long travel and fatigue of travelling. It feels big to me to arrive at the stadium tomorrow, but yeah you have apoint that if it's the only game at the weekend, it maybe has more attention. But to shoot tomorrow after 120 minutes of intense fight and in a full stadium, it's a different story. We have a chance to win something tomorrow domestic. Tuchel and his players will hope it’s a case of third-time lucky, although Liverpool will not be easy to overcome. A set-piece, a shot deflecting in off the post, who gets the lead first, whatever. N’Golo Kante is also a doubt despite the Frenchman returning to training yesterday.

Their tallies don't yet match, but the Blues are beginning to position themselves as the powerhouse of women's football in England. This group will want to win it and if they do, it will cement them as the best team in England right now." This is just a final game of the season. The crescendo at Wembley Stadium this Sunday will therefore be telling. "I haven't seen a team cause Chelsea as many problems as Man City did in that final for a long time. That's what won them last year's FA Cup," the former Chelsea midfielder continued. In this instance, form across the entire season is a problematic gauge. The cost of a string of disappointing results. Chelsea are resilient; in stressful moments they don't panic, they problem solve, they get out of sticky situations. "City are unbeaten since early February - their goals for are pretty spectacular in this period. Paul Merson has made his prediction for this weekend's FA Cup final as Chelsea go head-to-head with Liverpool at Wembley.

‘When I first thought about this game, I was inkling towards a draw, but I fancy Chelsea to win it 2-1 as Fabinho’s absence swings the game in the Blues’ favor. Timo Werner can cause a lot of problems with his pace and directness, while Romelu Lukaku has been back amongst the goals in recent weeks and looks a different player now. ‘In recent weeks, both teams have looked a bit tired and open at the back.

Jurgen Klopp's side can complete a 2022 cup final double over Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday evening.

Betfred make Liverpool a shade of odds-against (21/20) to do just that, with Chelsea 11/4 outsiders to lift the trophy in regulation time. Sure, they dispatched Leeds with the minimum of fuss but that was only their second win in six games and the feeling remains that their season is petering out. If they can get anywhere near that level of form against Chelsea then the Blues won't be able to keep them at bay.

So even though Chelsea are current world champions, Liverpool have a stronger case to be the best team on the planet, and indeed in the solar system. Thomas Tuchel needs to make a call on the fitness of N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic, neither of whom are 100 per cent fit. (That lot on Neptune are still playing the W-M formation FFS.) The recent form of both clubs makes them odds-on favourites today, though Chelsea looked a lot perkier when they dismantled Leeds in the week. One of those was a 2-1 victory over Liverpool a decade ago, when Petr Cech made one of the great FA Cup final saves. This is the 150th FA Cup final; none of the previous 149 have involved one recent world champion, never mind two. Thomas Tuchel enters the 2021-22 FA Cup final against Liverpool knowing that Chelsea will end their season without a domestic trophy if they do not triumph ...

Leicester scored with their only shot on target — a spectacular long-range effort from Tielemans — to win last season's final after Chelsea had far more of the possession and attempts. After a 2-2 draw against Leeds United when their opponents had twice been ahead at Wembley, a replay at Old Trafford was settled by David Webb's goal in a 2-1 win after extra time. So what does Tuchel's track record in the FA Cup tell us about Chelsea's chances of victory at Wembley? Two weeks before the ecstasy of winning the Champions League, Chelsea underperformed in a 1-0 defeat to Leicester City in the FA Cup final in May 2021, when Youri Tielemans' second-half strike made the difference. In his first season in the competition, Tuchel then won three games to take Chelsea to the final, including a 1-0 win over Man City in the semifinal at Wembley. A dramatically late Champions League quarterfinal exit to Real Madrid and an EFL Cup final shootout defeat to the Reds in February means the FA Cup is the only English trophy left for Chelsea to win before the season ends.

FA Cup final weekend football countdown – as it happened (The Guardian)

A look back at our updates ahead of the FA Cup finals, the Championship playoffs and the penultimate weekend of the Premier League.

Such is the convolution of the calendar that the men’s FA Cup final is being played with two matches of the Premier League to be played by most teams, while the women’s final - rightfully being played after the WSL season - is being played amid some vital men’s Premier League football. I still feel we have a long way to go in that respect, but the training ground work is what I love and that’s what we’ll really be focusing on for pre-season. They had to give everything in the Women’s Super League right up to the final moment to ensure they won a third successive title. I always believed in the players - and that was regardless of the transfer window - I always believed that we could stay in the division. “For me that moment changed my life, changed the club and everything,” said Aguero after seeing the statue for the first time. And look, sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn’t, but the most important thing is that I do everything this week so that I know that I’ve done everything in my power to perform on the day.” This was a little bit early for me but I’m from the era where Cup Final Knockout was part of the build-up. And then of course on the pitch, I have to make an impact. “The most important thing is being absolutely ready to go to Bramall Lane. We’ve got to thrive on it and not be fearful of it. That’s what it is sometimes in football, the attention is so high that sometimes it attracts situations that you don’t want to have before big matches. “What we’re trying to do is really embrace that amazing era of the club, and create positive futures as well. No player has had a direct hand in more FA Cup goals this season than Chelsea’s Timo Werner (two goals, three assists), which is also the outright most of any player for the two sides in the final.

Old traditions meet modern convention in FA Cup final of promise (The Guardian)

Liverpool and Chelsea clash at Wembley on Saturday with a rich history of Cup success in today's changing landscape.

For all this, and for all the Cardiff heroics of Michael Owen in 2001 and Steven Gerrard in 2006, Liverpool have not won the Cup at Wembley for 30 years. Those seven wins between 1997 and 2018 – achieved under seven managers – feel somehow pivotal to the mythology of the modern Chelsea, the idea that there is no club in England better at lifting itself for the one-off occasion. But nor is it the sort of thing you put on the side of a bus. For Jürgen Klopp and his formidable Liverpool team, the FA Cup represents a sort of final frontier, a destination as well as a part of the wider journey. At its best the FA Cup is not simply a time capsule or historical re-enactment. One of the greatest misconceptions about the FA Cup over the years is that it has failed to move with the times.

MATCHDAY: Liverpool plays Chelsea in FA Cup final (USA TODAY)

The next step in Liverpool's quest for an unlikely quadruple of trophies is the FA Cup final on Saturday against Chelsea.

In the penultimate round of the league, the race for second place and an automatic Champions League spot is between Marseille and Monaco. Although second-placed Marseille holds a three-point lead over third-placed Monaco, it faces a tougher-looking trip to Rennes, which is battling with Nice to finish in fourth and the Europa League entry place. Freiburg could yet squeeze into the Champions League with a win at already-qualified Bayer Leverkusen – if Leipzig loses in Bielefeld. Union Berlin can clinch its place in the Europa League with a win at home over Bochum, but Cologne can capitalize on any Union slip-up by beating Stuttgart – which is fighting for survival. Bielefeld is the favorite to join already relegated Greuther Fürth in the second division, but it still has a chance of survival if it beats visiting Leipzig, which needs a point to reach the Champions League. Stuttgart, in the relegation playoff spot, could yet escape and leave Hertha in its place with a win over visiting Cologne if Hertha loses at Borussia Dortmund. Hertha just needs a draw to clinch survival. The next step in Liverpool’s quest for an unlikely quadruple of trophies is the FA Cup final against Chelsea. Jürgen Klopp’s side is looking to repeat the League Cup final triumph over the same London club in February. Winning world football’s oldest competition would complete the set of major trophies for Klopp since taking charge of Liverpool in 2015. An investment group led by Todd Boehly looks to complete the takeover from sanctioned owner Roman Abramovich. Tuchel has reached every major final since being hired by Chelsea at the start of 2021, winning the Champions League last season and the Club World Cup in February. The FA Cup final is celebrating 150 years since the start of the competition. Chelsea is almost certain to qualify for the Champions League by finishing third, so winning the FA Cup -- after Thomas Tuchel’s side was beaten in last season’s final by Leicester -- would provide a welcome lift.

We will try in two and a half hours in training and we will know more about it. Was a reduced training session because of quite a long travel and fatigue of travelling. “In the game, again he was very, very good and in general he stepped up this season again in his game. At the same time we missed Jorgi and N’golo, which cost us a little bit. The qualities of him, the personality we have spoken a lot. It’s pretty surprising to be in a situation where we can try it but Mateo wants to try it.

Liverpool face major FA Cup final dilemma as one of £43m Jürgen ... (Liverpool.com)

Split Opinion: Liverpool could go with Joël Matip or Ibrahima Konaté against Chelsea for the FA Cup final. Two of our writers have their say on what they ...

This is of course a bigger game, and so Konaté should be allowed to partner Van Dijk, and save Matip for the final couple of games of the league season and then for Paris. Jürgen Klopp has been smart in knowing when to rotate Matip and letting his body recover after spending the majority of last season out through injury. This is where Konaté (valued at £27m by Transfermarkt) would come into play, with his speed one of his primary assets. But while Matip may not be the quickest, he is no slouch either, and he more than makes up for any lack of pace with excellent positioning and constant concentration. Nevertheless, if forced to name his overall strongest side, he would probably still lean towards Matip (valued at £16m by Transfermarkt). An elite progressor of the ball as well a seasoned professional at the back, he remains an underrated part of this Liverpool side, and one who is capable of making the difference against Chelsea at both ends of the pitch. Liverpool take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final today, and Jürgen Klopp has some big decisions to make.
