The Sony Xperia 1 IV offers the first true optical zoom in a smartphone (The Verge)

Among the Sony Xperia 1 IV's three rear cameras is a 3.5–5.2x optical zoom lens — the first in a phone. Other specs include a 6.5-inch OLED with 120Hz ...

There’s also no getting around the fact that the Xperia 1 IV is working with small sensors and small optics compared to a traditional camera. The Xperia 1 IV offers a ton of manual control for video recording — way more than an enthusiast still photographer like me can hope to understand and use properly. Some of my shots with the zoom lens look a little overexposed and are softer than they should be. Maybe the next iteration will go a step further with a longer zoom range. For the same MSRP, the Galaxy S22 Ultra offers an excellent portrait mode, a standard wide, ultrawide, a 3x telephoto, and a 10x telephoto. The Xperia 1 IV is sometimes capable of fantastic images — photos I’m amazed I was able to take with a smartphone. But the unit I was able to demo is also inconsistent and sometimes makes poor judgments on white balance and scenes with challenging lighting. But until then, the Xperia 1 IV offers our only real, tangible proof of a true smartphone-sized zoom. Seriously, it’s almost creepy how good it is at finding your subject’s eye and sticking with it, and it works nearly flawlessly on all of the rear cameras. The Xperia 1 IV’s telephoto lens is different because it does allow you to set the focal length at 85mm, 125mm, and anywhere in between. But $1600 matches the most expensive variants of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, both of which at least give you 1TB of storage for that kind of money. To be sure, you’ll find plenty of premium specs on the device, starting with a 6.5-inch 4K (well, 1644 x 3840 but close enough) OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Sony's Xperia 1 IV is the World's First Smartphone with True Optical ... (PetaPixel)

Sony's Xperia 1 Mark IV is packed with photo and video-centric features and is also the first smartphone with a true optical zoom lens.

That said, the battery has a promised three years of life and a quick charge feature that can get up to 50% charge in 30 minutes. Sound recording and editing is free of charge, while cloud processing for high-quality sound is subject to a monthly fee in an amount that Sony did not disclose at the time of publication. The second is a 24mm wide camera with an f/1.7 aperture and a 1/1.7-inch sensor that also has image stabilization in the form of Sony’s Optical SteadyShot. Below that camera is a 3D iToF sensor (time of flight). The last camera is a periscope-style camera that features an 85-125mm f/2.3-f/2.8 lens in front of a 1/3.5-inch sensor that also features Optical SteadyShot. The battery is a robust 5,000 mAh, but Sony stops short of saying how many hours users can expect to get out of a full charge. It then reproduces the frequency response of Sony’s high-performance condenser microphones while producing reverberation similar to that of a professional studio.” Sony says the Xperia 1 IV combines that powerful optical telephoto zoom lens with both bokeh and advanced autofocus technology to deliver high-quality photos. Sony says that the 120Hz display delivers exceptionally smooth graphics performance and the phone’s 240Hz high-speed touch scanning rate supports the needs of a growing mobile gaming market. Finally, Sony says that the Zeiss optics have been calibrated specifically for the Xperia 1 IV and the T* coating contributes to accurate rendering and contrast by reducing reflections for all rear camera lenses. The company claims the smartphone improves the quality of live streaming while also simplifying the process. Thanks to this sensor, the Xperia 1 IV can shoot 4K HDR video and 12-megapixel photos from the front-facing camera. The first is a 16mm ultra-wide that features an f/2.2 aperture and is in front of a 1/2.5-inch sensor. It’s also the first smartphone with a true optical zoom lens that can shoot between 85mm and 125mm.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV Has a 4K Display and an Actual Zoom Lens (CNET)

Sony's newest phone pushes the boundaries of specs, features and price.

The Xperia's photo has the most contrast and the Pixel's photo the least. Video Pro is a less fussy app to use for recording videos compared to the Cinema Pro app. The Xperia 1 IV will be out in the US on September 1 and is available to preorder today. The photo from the iPhone looks the sharpest, but I love the way the Xperia captures the colors. Take a look below at some of my favorite photos that I took with the Sony Xperia 1 IV. The Xperia's lack of computational magic gives the iPhone and Pixel the edge when comparing the phones. But if you can afford it and you want a cutting-edge phone that's steeped in the intricate processes of photography and filmmaking, the Xperia 1 IV is waiting for you. Sony lent me a preproduction sample of the Xperia 1 IV. The software isn't final and some features didn't work fully or were completely absent. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pixel 6 Pro are two of the best phones you can buy today for photography. The Xperia 1 IV is the world's first phone with a true optical zoom lens. Inside the svelte, understated body of the new Sony Xperia 1 IV is a telephoto camera lens with tiny elements that can freely move back and forth to zoom in and out. The Xperia 1 IV represents an ideal that Sony's chased since 2019.

Sony Xperia 1 IV Review: For Fans Of Sony Cameras (Forbes)

The Sony Xperia 1 IV is the newest photography powerhouse from the Japanese tech giant—but this one is a bit different from other Android phones.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV is quite pricey at well over $1,300. The software is top notch and really makes the phone camera app feel like a Sony Alpha camera, but what about the hardware? It’s a system that I’ve compared to driving manual transmission (stick shift) in cars: it’s fun and rewarding if you have an interest in the process of controlling gears of an automobile, but most people would rather just drive automatic and not bother with the hassle. But if you’re using it out all day (usually a weekend), expect to need to charge the phone by or before dinner time. The phone runs Android 12 with Sony’s very light software overlay on top, and there’s not much to report here. Just like Sony Alpha cameras, you can half-press the button to lock focus, and then a full press to snap the photo. During light usage days (workdays if you’re tied to a desk for 8 hours a day), the phone will be fine. Sony's idea is that, while the iPhones and Google Pixels of the world tell consumers their AI is so smart they can snap photos for users, Sony is giving the user back their camera control, this means a camera mode full of granular controls that allows tweaking everything from shutter speed to ISO to white balance. I'm still of the belief that a relatively small mobile device screen can do just fine with 2k resolution, and anything beyond is overkill, a flex on the spec sheet, so to speak. While the back of the phone is a bit nondescript, the Xperia 1 IV has an understated minimalist look that some people may like. Throw in a 4K OLED screen that packs more than twice the pixels in a similar sized iPhone screen, and you have a device that caters to the hardcore power user, the dedicated enthusiasts. The front of the phone is mostly screen, and it's a gorgeous 4k, 120Hz OLED panel.

Sony Xperia 1 IV unveiled with revolutionary continuous zoom camera (GSMArena.com)

The outward design of the phone may look mostly the same, but Sony also upgraded the screen, speakers and the other cameras on the Mark 4.

But if you want to know more, here is what the Xperia 1 IV can do for you for semi-professional work. but mos timprotantly if it dies its covered by the warranty as is IP65/IP68 the shitty case form ali won't do anything and your phone will be dead for gh\ood Sony says that the end result is comparable to using a high-quality condenser mic. For wireless audio, this is among the first phones to support the new Bluetooth LE Audio tech, as well as the usual LDAC. 360 Reality Audio is now supported in more apps (previously it was limited to Tidal). The ultra-wide camera gets a 1/2.5” sensor with a 16mm lens (with autofocus). For completeness’ sake, the telephoto module houses a 1/3.5” sensor and also has OIS and AF. By the way, the two-stage shutter button is still available on the side, follwing the Xperia tradition. Anyway, the device is rated IP68/IPX5 for dust and water resistance as expected. This year it also upgraded the selfie camera to 12MP (up from 8MP), thanks to a new 1/2.9” ExmorRS sensor. Note that this year there will be no bundled charger – Sony is presenting this change as part of its green initiative (“Road to Zero”). It has allowed for a smaller retail box and Sony also made sure it does not contain any plastics. And this year there is a beefier GPU running the show – Snapdragon 8 Gen 1’s Adreno 730. The Sony Xperia 1 IV telephoto camera offers continuous optical zoom thanks to a revolutionary new design. The new Sony Xperia 1 IV is here and it delves deeper in its passions: photography, video, movies, music and gaming. The main camera has a 1/1.7” sensor and an OIS-enabled 24mm lens.
