Lukoki, nicknamed ‘The Son of the Wind’ began his career playing for Ajax, where he had been at youth level. After only one season, it was announced Lukoki would return to the Netherlands and he had signed with FC Twente but a knee injury prevented the Congolese international from playing any matches and in February, FC Twente terminated his contract citing “events in his personal life” as the reason for his departure.

He left Twente in February when his contract was terminated. The club cited "events in his personal life" as the reason. Dutch club Twente tweeted on Monday: "This morning FC Twente received the terrible news that Jody Lukoki has passed away.

He joined the Ajax youth ranks in 2003 and rose through their academy system before making his senior debut in 2011, and went on to become a three-time Eredivisie winner, playing his biggest role amid the 2012-13 campaign. Born in Kindu, Zaire in 1992, Lukoki immigrated to the Netherlands with his family amid the First Congo War, where he was subsequently raised in Amsterdam. The late winger, a three-time Eredivisie winner, was let go by his most recent club FC Twente in February, following a prolonged lay-off with a knee injury and off-field personal issues.
