So the last weekend hasn’t been great for me, I did a mistake in the race but today went well, so we are starting on pole and we need to finish the job tomorrow. First forays saw Verstappen top with a time of 1m 29.202s and Perez second by 0.471s, the Ferraris half a tenth behind in third and fourth. Verstappen was now in the driving seat for pole. Further runs would see the pack shuffle, the Scuderia re-emerging for Leclerc to go top again with a time of 1m 29.130s, Verstappen now 0.072s behind. Bottas rounded out the top five ahead of Hamilton, while Gasly took seventh. In the provisional drop zone was Stroll, Schumacher, Vettel, Ricciardo and Russell, who backed out of two efforts with the car porpoising heavily. Leclerc improved in Sector 1, set a purple second sector, but couldn’t improve in his third. Lewis Hamilton abandoned his first effort and a subsequent lap was deleted for track limits, putting the Mercedes driver in the drop zone with time ticking down. Q3 saw the reigning champion take provisional pole but Leclerc eclipsed him for a final pole time of 1m 28.796s, Sainz filing in second by 0.190s. That meant Alonso (who felt he was impeded by compatriot Carlos Sainz) missed out by just 0.032s – and Russell finished P12 amid severe porpoising, another 0.013s off the two-time champion. Perez’s first effort put him half a second behind in P4. Between them was Lando Norris, eighth in qualifying despite going P3 in Q2. Lance Stroll rounded out the top 10 for Aston Martin.

7) Pierre Gasly 2) Carlos Sainz 1) Charles Leclerc "It was a much, much better qualifying session than I've had for the last three races, so I'm grateful for that to be honest and I'll take it," said the seven-time world champion. "We are a bit confused to be honest," he said. Having come into Saturday as arguably the team to beat given their Friday form, Mercedes struggled in final practice and were then distant in qualifying.

We were aiming for Q3 but were expecting it to be really tricky, as I struggled a lot at the start of the weekend, so I think it’s been a good comeback today and we definitely maximised the performance of the car in Qualifying. Tomorrow is of course where it counts and I’m really looking forward to it. The whole team has been working so hard to have the car in a good place, so it’s disappointing not to be able to see the true potential in Qualifying. It was a big hit, so I was a bit shaken but thankfully I’m fine. Lance drove a nice lap in Q2 to get through to Q3, but he was then unable to improve and will therefore start tomorrow’s race from P10. Following our double points finish at Imola, I think it is fair to say that we have made some progress with the issues affecting our car here in Miami. Seb also showed decent pace, but he made an error at the chicane on his fastest lap in Q2 and he was therefore unable to progress through to Q3. Nonetheless, we look forward to tomorrow and a long, hot race. The car wasn’t quite where we wanted to be, and I don’t feel like I got everything out of it, which made it a difficult session to drive, but I think today was tricky for everyone. It’s a new track, which brings with it a lot of unknowns, we don’t have much data on degradation for our tyre strategy and even don’t know if there will be many opportunities to overtake, but I think it’ll be a fun race.” We gained good reference points from Friday, we just need to continue to understand and develop but it’s clear that we have a painful trajectory to follow at the moment." We have a good race car so we can fight to be in front of the midfield: a top five finish has to be our minimum target.” Unfortunately, we weren’t able to celebrate a good result with two cars: Zhou was forced to abandon his fastest lap as he ran into a group of nearly stationary cars at the end of his lap, and that meant he had to bow out in Q1. We will have a big job ahead of us tomorrow, but we are confident we can make up some ground, especially around here as the race will be unpredictable. Tomorrow will be a challenge, overtaking won’t be the easiest but it’s a track where it’s easy to make mistakes, so we need to be ready for any opportunity. Tomorrow will be a challenge, it will be hot for the car, the tyres and the driver – a hot and sweaty race. Today we had a big job to do: we had a good FP3, we had a clear direction for our set-up and the car was really quick. Tomorrow’s race could be the hottest of the season and we have seen how tricky this track and its surface can be, so it will be very important to prepare every last detail for the race, starting with how to manage the tyres.

I’m still not there and I think it’s not going to be a matter of one more race, I think it’s going to be very progressive through the season, but yeah, good progress even though today I was carrying a bit the weight of yesterday’s crash, I managed to still push the car to its limit in some of the corners and get a decent qualifying so I’m not going to complain. MV: Yeah, a bit of a weird moment to lose the car but again, it's just not really knowing the limits, I guess, and just trying a bit more. CS: No, the consideration is that we are teammates and that we want to score a one-two for the team independently of who is ahead or behind. And yeah, in qualifying, up to a certain point it was fine but then to actually really go to the limit and try to find a bit more time… I think the fact that I was out there today doing some purple sectors is a good sign and it means that in some corners I’m starting to understand the car and starting to drive it the way it should be driven. And I'm of course still pleased to be in third position and actually be very close to the guys next to me but yeah, I think we can do so much better by just actually operate a bit cleaner and smoother. Even at the start it could be very tricky on that inside line, and that outside line of Turn One. From here, I think we've asked the FIA to make sure that the track is as clean as possible for that start because we could see mistakes coming from drivers that really have no blame from it – because it's basically like driving on a dry line and out of the line is feels like it's wet – so we need a bit of help there from the race direction to help us. CS: Yeah, no, it was a pretty good lap but I’m still pushing a bit over, like on the limit, you know, to try and find the right way to drive this car and the balance, but up until that corner, everything was going well then I tried a bit of a different line in last corner. CS: I think overtaking is possible with all these three long straights, but at the same time, all drivers complained about the lack of grip that there is offline, so if you're going to make a pass, you need to make it stick fairly early into the braking. I think we found a track that is very unpredictable, very slippery, very easy to do mistakes. It wasn't easy at all to get the confidence back in such a difficult circuit like this new one in Miami. But yeah, kept it cool until Q3. I think I pulled out a couple of good laps. It's incredible to be here in the US and to see how much the sport has grown over the past few years and to see so many people in the grandstand.

F1's inaugural qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix was an exciting one as Ferrari locked out the front-row with Charles Leclerc on pole position. Here.
Kevin Magnussen was knocked out in Q1 for the second time this season as he struggled to improve in the dying stages of qualifying. Here are five drivers that shocked us on Saturday in Miami. The Mercedes W13 continues to be a very difficult to car which was highlighted by Russell’s run in Q2 where he struggled to keep the car on the track with a couple of oversteer moments. In the Australian’s defence, McLaren was very slow to send Ricciardo out at the end of the season due to an unconfirmed problem, thus he wasn’t able to get his tyres into the right window. A Q3 appearance looked unlikely for Bottas after he ended Q1 down in 15th and was fortunate to make it through given that Esteban Ocon didn’t participate in the session following his shunt in final practice and Alfa Romeo teammate Guanyu Zhou hitting traffic on his last lap. It was a remarkable turnaround for the Finn after he crashed out at Turn 7 in FP1, forcing him to miss the entirety of second practice because Alfa Romeo couldn’t repair his car in time.
