At some point, filmmakers need to ask themselves why and how they depict sexual violence and what purpose does it serve.
The two actors are at their best in a story that unfortunately needs to deeply introspect on how it chooses to depict the brutalities of the real world. It revels in the torment of its characters; draws out their pain, their howls of agony, and the camera lingers with an almost vile hunger on their gruesome wounds. The reference is to Periyar’s anti-caste Suyamariaathai Movement. The set-up to convince us of the villainy of these men is peppered with hints like this and to point to Maari’s caste-location. Every element surrounding the violent act is almost serene, as if to say the cruel acts of powerful people happen unchecked as the world carries on with its business, indifferent. The two of them, despite being far nearer to the camera, look like miniature dolls. The second installment of director Arun Matheswaran’s revenge trilogy is here and it is a conflicting watch.
Saani Kaayidham movie review: Saani Kaayidham is a no-nonsense revenge drama with non-stop action, meaning an unrestrained flow of savagery.
It is not something we are used to in Tamil cinema but something we may develop a taste for if we can manage to see the primal truth that provides Arun’s characters with a superhuman capacity for brutality and violence. He shows the unadulterated vision of what happens when we let hate into our hearts and the toll that it takes on the human psyche and our civilization. Selvaraghavan fits effortlessly in the role of a man with deep despondency and hoping to find something good in this harsh life, he could live for. But, the crime is shown from the perspective of the victim, capturing the nauseating ugliness of the actions of these men. A mill worker aspires to break free from poverty and grow in life by seeking to participate in elections. And yes, Arun unflinchingly holds the camera on the scenes as long as the main characters need to torture their rivals, watch them suffer and give them the most painful death possible.

Here is a story that will not leave you with an empty stomach, and its cast is the one to tell this tale. But the script is written in a way to ensure that nothing out-of-the-ordinary happens from then on. The story might get predictable at times, but it is still worth watching as it shows some beautiful values in life. Essentially, it is the journey of all of us from our first birth to our last breath. While the former infects the characters in the movie, it is in real life that the latter propels us to dream big, overcome our fears, and conquer all obstacles. The plot is exciting, and the performances are excellent.

Saani Kaayidham is a cathartic, blood-soaked revenge saga with Arun Matheswaran's penchant for enticing visuals on display throughout.
He captures a man crushed between the side of a van and a wall. If the prologue presents us with the theme of this film, the epilogue serves not just to clarify crucial information about a supporting character, Sudalai, but also as a lament for wronged women like Ponni. It’s also beautiful that while we learn the truth about Sudalai, Ponni doesn’t. Instead, this woman, so wronged, so traumatised, has learned once again to trust someone… Sangayya is not in the wrong, no, and yet, it feels like director Arun missed an opportunity to portray Ponni as a woman capable of operating without a man standing guard. And later, you realise that this visual is necessary for a reveal about the young boy, Sudalai. It’s impressive that Arun isn’t interested in eliciting an easy emotional reaction from us by showing the victim during the abuse. At the centre is Ponni, a subjugated woman trapped in a man’s world. In a memorable scene, she steps on the accelerator of a van, yells out an expletive, and drives at men who never imagined that a woman could fight back. Unlike in Kill Bill where the protagonist operates alone—which serves to empower—here, Ponni has a shepherd, an able deputy, in Sangayya. And towards the end when she calls him god in a sense, it was hard not to feel slightly uncomfortable because this film, after all, is about a bunch of men underestimating the strength of a woman. What a relief to see Keerthy Suresh belt expletives out with all the fury of a scorned woman and none of the reticence of a Tamil cinema woman. There’s even a small piece of paper on which is written down the names of those she plans on eliminating. Revenge, as Tarantino put it once, is a messy affair, and Saani Kaayidham captures both the messiness and the catharsis. The moment defines the purpose of Saani Kaayidham in a sense, and its loyalty to the fiery emotion called revenge. Another more impactful shot is of Ponni (Keerthy Suresh), face bloodied and weapon-ready, bearing down on her adversary in a theatre, while projection rays from behind her lend her the aura of a revenge goddess.
Keerthy Suresh, Selvaraghavan shine in this brutal revenge saga which is both heart-wrenching and cold-blooded.
Though the tragedy is brutal and painful which are perfectly conveyed as dialogues and visual sequences, the flashes of Ponni’s husband and kid are not powerful enough to feel her loss. Because the truth is worth it.) There are solid sequences for both the actors to perform in the blood soaked tale of vengeance. Simply put, Saani Kaayidham is the movie representation for the proverbs ‘Tit for Tat’ and ‘An eye for an eye’. Is it the right thing to do? What does not sit quite well is that Ponni and Sangaiyah see no hurdles at all when they are executing their ‘enemies to kill’ checklist. They seek revenge by recreating the hell for those who pushed them into one.
