Japan PM Fumio Kishida warns of Ukraine-style invasion in East Asia (Republic World)

Japanese PM warned against tolerating unilateral attempts to change the status quo by the use of force in the Indo Pacific, especially in East Asia.

Kishida, who arrived in UK as a part of his extended trip to Southeast Asian countries, bolstered the defence partnership with Britain. The two nations agreed to exert “maximum pressure” on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime in retaliation to his military invasion. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Thursday warned that invasion of Ukraine could be replicated in East Asia, and like Ukraine the region could witness instability. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also challenged the United States for interfering in Taiwan issue, and warned against bolstering ties with the island nation.

Japan to allow tourist groups as soon as this month: Report (Aljazeera.com)

Arrivals must have three COVID vaccination shots and be part of a package tour with a fixed itinerary, report says.

His cautious stance — which he credits for helping keep Japan’s virus death rate low — has helped bolster his public support ahead of a key upper house election set to be held in July. Until the pandemic, inbound travel was a rare bright spot for Japan’s economy as the number of foreign visitors expanded five-fold between 2011 and 2019. Those wishing to visit must have undergone three Covid vaccination shots and be part of a package tour with a fixed itinerary, FNN said Friday, citing multiple government officials. “Japan was very slow in the economic recovery compared to the U.S. on ‘living with the virus,’ so in that sense, the reopening of Japan will help to boost expectations for inbound recovery,” said Ayako Sera, a market strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank Ltd. “As soon as June, based on the opinions of experts, we will review coronavirus regulations, including border policies, in stages,” Kishida said late on Thursday. “We are still in a period of transition back to normal life.” Japan is set to experiment with opening its borders to small groups of vaccinated foreign tourists as soon as this month, Fuji News Network reported, in a potential lifeline for the country’s ailing travel industry.

Climate and currents shaped Japan's hunter-gatherer cultures (Phys.Org)

The island prefecture of Hokkaidō, Japan's second-largest island, has a rich cultural history of hunter-gatherers both on land and at sea.

But as the Tsushima Warm Current strengthened and nutrients dwindled, inland cultures thrived and expanded. They discovered a large shift in oxygen isotopes about 2,300 years ago, suggesting a switch in north Hokkaidō's climate from being controlled mostly by the westerlies and monsoon to being controlled by the Tsushima Warm Current. Over thousands of years through the Holocene and into the 19th century, the prevalence of these cultures across the island waxed and waned.
