Roe v. Wade live updates: Reactions to Supreme Court leaked ... (NBC News)

President Joe Biden has said “a woman's right to choose is fundamental” and that his administration “will be ready when any ruling is issued.”.

Should the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade goes too far and would divide the country. The organization was founded by Julian Assange and works to publish news leaks provided by anonymous sources. “As a Catholic, I do not support abortion, however, we cannot have an outright ban,” Cuellar said. Research suggests the bans and restrictions would have manifold effects on maternal health. The Supreme Court confirmed Tuesday that the leaked draft published on Monday by Politico was "authentic," with Chief Justice John Roberts calling the leak an "egregious breach" of the court's trust. Senate Democrats on Tuesday took the first steps to consider a bill that would codify the abortion rights protections in Roe v. They can fly to another country. Many say they’ve already been given a preview of what could be to come in states like Texas. However, the bill appears to lack the required 60 votes. “I walked proudly into Planned Parenthood, and I make no apologies to anyone.” “We will not go backward,” she said.

Dobbs v. Jackson; Roe v. Wade; U.S. Supreme Court; the future of abortion rights and reproductive freedom in America.

As noted above, by publicly identifying a justice with the opinion, the leak makes it much harder for that person to be persuaded to soften their view or switch sides. Often, members of the Court are persuaded by drafts to alter their views, to work to come up with a better or different draft, or even to switch sides. No opinion is worth the destructive effects this opinion would usher forth.” Across the world, millions of people are asking how and why the leak occurred, what the draft opinion says, and what – if it is in fact the final word – the opinion would mean in the real world. 2) The leak harms the Court and undermines its legitimacy. As Neil Siegel, a professor of both law and public policy at Duke University and a former clerk to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg told me in an interview Tuesday afternoon for the Policy Watch radio show/podcast, News and Views, leaks like this of draft rulings are incredibly rare and don’t happen by accident.

A draft US Supreme Court decision, leaked late on Monday, showed a majority of justices prepared to overturn the 1973 Roe v Wade decision that protects abortion rights. Canada's Supreme Court decriminalised abortion in a historic 1988 ruling. Every woman in Canada has the right to a legal and safe abortion," Trudeau told reporters before a meeting of Liberal lawmakers in Ottawa on Wednesday.

And no state legislature is going to get rid of interracial marriage." McGinnis added, "No state legislature is going to get rid of contraception. It doesn't pull any punches when it comes to the abortion right." Some conservative commentators have suggested that Alito has provided a road map for future attempts to eliminate other guaranteed liberties. Abortion, he said, is not, and rejected arguments that it is essential for privacy and bodily autonomy reasons. Conservative critics of the substantive due process principle have said it improperly lets unelected justices make policy choices better left to legislators.

“Roe’s core holding that, you know, women have a right to an abortion – I don’t think that would change,” said Barrett, then a Notre Dame law professor. The supreme court ultimately struck down that notification rule in Casey and reaffirmed the abortion right in 1992 by a 5-4 vote. She is also arguably the most consistent voice on the court arguing for the importance of adhering to precedents. He voted to uphold every abortion law the supreme court has considered since his 2006 confirmation. At his 2005 confirmation hearing, he said overturning precedent “is a jolt to the legal system”, which depends in part on stability and evenhandedness. Although a state may permit abortion, nothing in the constitution dictates that a state must do so.”

What to Know About the Leaked Supreme Court Abortion Draft ... (ACLU)

Brigitte Amiri, deputy director of the ACLU's Reproductive Freedom Project, breaks down what you should keep in mind in the wake of the leaked draft.

This is something that we all should be thinking about, and we really are not looking to the courts to make that change. It’s not going to be the courts that are going to make the change. Although some of this language may be softened before the final opinion does come out, it is hard not to see this as a window into the logic of a sitting justice that has a lot of power and is in the majority. We need to be looking to people who are organizing within the ACLU, our affiliates, and their coalitions on the ground, and looking to the local reproductive justice and health organizations that are already doing this work. The State of Mississippi asked the court not just to uphold the 15-week ban, but to consider the constitutionality of abortion in general, and whether the Constitution protects abortion at all. BA: If this is really where the Supreme Court is headed — that you only have a constitutional right if it was contemplated by white men in the 1700s — then there’s a whole host of issues that we work on here and that people care about in our country that are at risk, like access to contraception and LGBTQ rights. But the federal courts are becoming more and more hostile, and if we lose the federal constitutional right to abortion entirely, these courts will not be the avenue to protect abortion. This is a condensed version of that conversation, and you can listen to the full version here. But the plan from abortion opponents is to continue to push for a nationwide ban, so that could change. These are all critically important parts of the infrastructure that exist to make sure people can get care, and that infrastructure needs to be invested in. Donate to your local abortion fund, and to practical support organizations that make sure people can access care. So in that sense, it’s not a total shock that this is possibly where the court is going.
