Rafael Nadal Makes Winning Return Against Miomir Kecmanovic In ... (ATP Tour)

After six weeks away, Rafael Nadal made an emphatic return to the ATP Tour Wednesday at the Mutua Madrid Open, moving past Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-1, ...

The World No. 4 did not face a break point in the first set as he caused Kecmanovic problems with his accuracy and depth to lead after 36 minutes. Play was then halted at the start of the second due to rain, but resumed shortly after when the roof was closed on Manolo Santana Stadium. The interruption did little to halt Nadal’s rhythm, though, as he continued to play with relentless intensity. The 22-year-old has earned 23 tour-level wins, reaching the quarter-finals in Indian Wells and Miami. However, in a rain-disrupted clash against Kecmanovic, the World No. 4 played as if he had never been away, hitting with his explosive power as he recovered from failing to serve out the match at 6-5 in the second set to advance after one hour and 55 minutes. Nadal is aiming to win his sixth title on home soil in Madrid this week, having last triumphed at the clay-court event in 2017. I just try to stay humble to know things [are] not going to be perfect here and just moving forward with the right determination, to accept that I need to fight, I need to stay positive.

MADRID -- Rafael Nadal got off to a good start in his return from injury, defeating Miomir Kecmanovic in two sets to reach the third round at the Madrid Open on Wednesday. Nadal showed few signs of rustiness in his 6-1, 7-6 (4) opening win at home.

Nadal was broken twice, including while serving for the match at 6-5, but eventually prevailed in the tiebreaker by converting his first match point with an ace. He lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Monte Carlo semifinals. Tournament organizers said Nadal asked to play in the afternoon so his match would not coincide with Madrid's semifinal game against Manchester City. The second set I don't consider it a bad set, but as I am saying, when you have been a long time without competing, it's normal that you have up-and-downs in a match because you have to recover your routine." Only two of the top six doubles seeds are still standing in Madrid, and they will meet Friday on Stadium 3 as Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos take on Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah. Granollers and Zeballos, the second seeds, took a Match Tie-break on Thursday to start their Madrid campaign with a win. Zverev leads Auger-Aliassime 4-2 in their ATP Head2Head, though Felix won their last meeting at the ATP Cup in January, an event Team Canada went on to win. He did not get a chance to win a fourth set after the retirement of Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev first met at the 2018 Intessa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals — a five-set win for the Greek — and have played three times in each of the past two years. Both Nadal and Alcaraz have won three tour-level titles in 2022, tying Rublev for the most trophies on the season. After looking sharp in an opening win against Gael Monfils, Djokovic advanced to the quarter-finals via a walkover against Andy Murray, who withdrew with illness. Djokovic leads the pair's ATPHead2Head 3-0, with one win on each surface. Alcaraz is 25-3 on the year, with one of those losses coming in three sets against Nadal in the Indian Wells semi-finals. Obviously I will have to focus on my defensive game a little bit more. Alcaraz celebrated his 19th birthday with a battling win over Cameron Norrie, making him the youngest Madrid quarter-finalist in the tournament's history. "Rafa is the best ever on clay. The 35-year-old Nadal and the 19-year-old Alcaraz will meet Friday in a clash of generations that Spanish fans had been craving to see up close.

“That’s my goal.” Nadal said he doesn’t see a rivalry with Alcaraz because of the age difference. “I think that I am building my path. “I think that today, he is better than me and he has a good dynamic, a good momentum,” Nadal said. “I think I am a very realistic person, and that doesn’t take me to not believe that I can win or that I can do it, but today I think that Alcaraz is in a better physical state of mind, is more fit. He also beat him in the Indian Wells semifinals earlier this year. “I’m clear who, from the beginning, has some kind of advantage in tomorrow’s match,” Nadal said. Many more people know him.” My opponents are (Novak) Djokovic, (Roger) Federer, (Andy) Murray in his day. This has been my career and my rivalries.” Djokovic said in Madrid this week that his son has already replaced Nadal with Alcaraz as his idol. “As a supporter of tennis and sportsperson, I think it’s great to have a player like Carlos that has been able to reach this level and this strength,” Nadal said. “He’s one of the best players of the world, and I would say the best player in the world on clay,” Alcaraz said.
