Walker returns as City make four changes for Real Madrid decider (Manchester City FC)

Pep Guardiola makes four changes for City's Champions League semi-final second leg tie away at Real Madrid.

● Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema has scored nine UEFA Champions League goals in the knockout stages this season, with only Cristiano Ronaldo in 2016-17 (10) ever scoring more in a single season. ● Should Manchester City qualify for the UEFA Champions League final, they will have done so in consecutive seasons, having lost 1-0 to Chelsea in last season’s final. Only two semi-finals have seen 10 or more goals scored over the two legs: Juventus 6-4 Monaco in 1997-98 and Liverpool 7-6 Roma in 2017-18. ● Real Madrid have lost their last two UEFA Champions League matches and have only lost three in a row once before, doing so between February and October 2020, a run which included two defeats to Manchester City. Current manager Carlo Ancelotti has never lost three matches in a row in the Champions League, with this match his 178th in the competition. ● Manchester City have won their last three UEFA Champions League matches against Real Madrid; only two sides have ever won four in a row against them in European competition, with Ajax doing so between 1973 and 1995 and Bayern Munich between 2000 and 2002. ●The first leg between Manchester City and Real Madrid was only the second semi-final first leg in UEFA Champions League history to see seven goals scored, along with Liverpool 5-2 Roma in 2017-18.

LIVE: Real Madrid, Man City Play for Place in Champions League ... (Sports Illustrated)

The two sides combined for seven goals in their meeting at the Etihad last week, with Man City coming away with the slight advantage.

Once again, it was Vinícius who had the chance in front of goal, but the Brazilian missed the target. While City recorded four shots on goal in the first 40 minutes, Real continued to miss the target. The start lacked the frenetic energy and disorder of the first leg with neither side able to capitalize on a serious chance.

Manchester City are looking to book their place in the Champions League final as they face Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the semi-final second leg.

In recent minutes, Casemiro and Benzema have both force City to put the ball out of play after going down with injuries. A little nudge in the back from behind is risky, but there's nothing doing as the home crowd scream for a free kick and further action. Benzema makes the run into the area with just Ederson to beat from a nice angle on his right foot. Kyle Walker is able to walk off and then gets ready to come back on the pitch. Kevin De Bruyne feeds through Bernardo for a shooting opportunity. City beat Real 4-3 in last week's first leg at the Etihad, and will be looking to use that advantage at the Bernabeu against Carlo Ancelotti's Champions League experts. Walker hasn't featured since the quarter-final second leg at Atletico Madrid, and will be assessed on Wednesday to see if he can play. Then he goes down having injured himself. Let off - even if the flag was up. Kyle Walker stalls in possession and Vinicius takes it off him. He has to score, but spoons it wide. Thibault Courtois is alert to it.

Two of the Best Soccer Teams on Earth Will Try to Conquer Their ... (Slate Magazine)

Eight days after Manchester City and Real Madrid played what may be the Champions League game of the season, the sequel to their semifinal instant classic ...

The Spanish team will have to beat Manchester City by 1 to send the game to extra time and by 2 to win it before penalties. As long as Modrić can find a passing helix, as long as Benzema is given a coffin’s worth of space inside the box, Madrid has a chance. Last season it finally made the final only to lose to English rivals Chelsea, but before that it fell to the likes of Lyon in 2020, Tottenham in 2019, and a work-in-progress Liverpool that finished 25 points behind Manchester City in the Premier League in 2018. When Liverpool plays poorly—which, granted, has barely happened in 2022—it feels like a party in the aftermath of a noise complaint. Madrid did get Buster Douglas’d at home in the group stages by unheralded Transnistrian club Sheriff Tiraspol in September.) When Manchester City plays poorly, its players look like they’ve realized on Step 30 that they made a mistake on Step 12 of whatever it is they’re assembling. This season, the person charged with prying open the jaws of defeat over and over again has been Benzema. Overshadowed for the better part of a decade at Real Madrid by Cristiano Ronaldo and occasional glimpses of Gareth Bale, the 34-year-old French striker is now the team’s top scorer and most prolific assister, the best player in La Liga during its first post-Messi season. Contrast this to Manchester City, which has been among the very best teams in Europe under Guardiola—it has won three Premier League titles in the past four years, and is currently a point ahead of Liverpool in the race to this year’s finish—but has often disappointed its own high standards in continental competition. Meanwhile, Madrid’s indomitable old guard midfield of Casemiro, Toni Kroos, and Luka Modrić remain as difficult to take the ball from as during the threepeat. Instead, Real Madrid lived up to its own legacy by answering with a swiveling volley from star striker Karim Benzema, and continued to rebut City for the rest of the contest. In 2022, Real Madrid has finished each of its previous two knockout series with fewer expected goals than its opponents. Bernardo Silva made it four for Manchester City with approximately 15 minutes remaining; Benzema chipped home a penalty with eight minutes left, drawing a real “Apollo Creed hanging his head when Rocky gets up in the 14th round” reaction from Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. Manchester City looked as though it might end the series before the whistle blew for half-time.

Real Madrid face Manchester City in the highly anticipated second leg of their Champions League semi-final tie, with Pep Guardiola's men having a 4-3 lead ...

Cancelo does well to win a corner for City but Real eventually manage to clear the danger. 90 minutes from kickoff: The first leg in Manchester was hugely entertaining and it is hoped that tonight's clash will also be of a very high standard. 26 mins: Toni Kroos tries his luck from a free-kick, with his effort deflecting off Mahrez as Real look to up the ante. GOAL - Real Madrid 0-1 Manchester City (Mahrez) Riyad Mahrez scores a superb goal to put City ahead on the night and they now lead 5-3 on aggregate. 1 hour from kickoff: Although City have a one-goal lead to predict, it is difficult to imagine Pep Guardiola setting his team up with an entirely defensive mindset. Pep Guardiola's side have looked assured in possession and have managed to cope well with the threat of Real so far but can they do the same in the second half? Riyad Mahrez is also involved from the outset, with Raheem Sterling named among the substitutes. The Real Madrid midfielder now requires treatment but is okay to continue. Full time in normal time: Real Madrid 2-1 Manchester City (5-5 on aggregate): Extra-time will now follow after an unbelievable comeback from Real. City seemed set for the final following Mahrez's goal but substitute Rodrygo scored two goals in as many minutes for Real late on. Will City be able to make it an all-English final again, with Liverpool's place in Paris already secured? 55 mins: Benzema looks to play in Vinicius Junior, but Laporte makes a vital interception. The first chance of extra-time falls to Benzema, whose shot is saved.

Real Madrid in final after Rodrygo and Karim Benzema stun ... (The Guardian)

Manchester City were heading to the Champions League final after Riyad Mahrez's strike but two late goals from Rodrygo then Karim Benzema's extra-time ...

It is all a part of the show, all a part of what City had to tame. It was Bernardo Silva who played the final pass, teasing it into the path of the onrushing Mahrez, who had been peripheral up until that point. Foden drew a diving save out of Courtois with a header at the end of the first period of extra time but the broad answer was no. It was a tired challenge from Rúben Dias on Karim Benzema, who had nipped in front of the City defender and on to a low Rodrygo cross – an obvious penalty. Benzema had kept Real in the tie at the end of the first-leg with an ice-in-the-veins panenka. It was the way that the footballing gods, with whom Real appear to have a deal with options, tormented them.

They put a lot of players in the box and they score two goals." We found our tempo, the players were comfortable on the pitch. "We were close but football is unpredictable," Guardiola said to BT Sport after the loss. "They scored goals in the last minutes.

Real Madrid vs. Manchester City: Where does this Champions ... (CBSSports.com)

It was another magical night in the greatest club competition in the world -- the UEFA Champions League. Manchester City looked to be cruising into the UCL ...

The final in Istanbul is one of the most iconic soccer matches in history, one that I remember vividly. But in terms of the most clutch comeback, this is up there with any two-leg affair in the competition's history considering they needed two goals in added time to just force extra time. Real may not always be the most convincing team on the field, but there is no denying the result and what just they just pulled off. But this game was just bonkers, with Milan taking the lead a minute in through Maldini. It was 3-0 by the half with an Hernan Crespo double, the last goal coming in the 44th minute to surely end any hope of a comeback. PSG conceded four times in the second half and three times after the 88th minute. But it was Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer an Xabi Alonso off his own missed penalty kick, tapping in the rebound, drawing level with three goals in seven minutes. Sure, it wasn't via a crazy amount of goals, and not having the away goals rule anymore added to the intrigue and belief that Real were still in it. A 3-0 win in the first leg at Camp Nou seemed like more than enough to advance after 90 minutes at Anfield. In all honesty, a 3-0 win for the Reds would have been a shock, so 4-0? AC Milan crushed Deportivo La Coruna 4-1 in the first leg, and there was no way a team featuring the likes of Dida, Cafu, Paolo Maldini, Andriy Shevchenko and arguably the world's top young talent Kaka, were going to blow this. You can argue it was the most improbable comeback because in the others below, there was plenty of time to pull it off -- maybe a half or an entire game. Looking back through the years of this historic competition, where does Wednesday's this jaw-dropping second-half comeback (or collapse, depending on your rooting interest) rank? Craving even more coverage of the world's game?

Caesars reported taking a $1,000 bet on Real Madrid to win the match in regulation just 15 seconds prior to Rodrygo's first goal. Rodrygo's opening goal, when he got to a Benzema pass ahead of Ederson, was Madrid's first effort on target on the night. The best is yet to come, the most important [thing] is yet to come, but we have to enjoy the moment. In sharp contrast to last week's breathless contest in Manchester, the second leg of the semifinal was largely a much more cautious affair. We had to defend well, and we did it. After coming off the bench, Rodrygo scored in the 90th and 91st minutes to level the aggregate score and send the Bernabeu crowd into bedlam and the semifinal to extra time. And Vinicius Jr. missed an even clearer opportunity in the opening moments of the second half when getting his finish all wrong after a rehearsed kickoff routine gave him a clear sight of goal from six yards. Indeed, City were inches from putting the result beyond doubt when substitute Jack Grealish beat Courtois only to see Ferland Mendy desperately clear the ball off his own goalline. Madrid looked like they would be made to pay for that profligacy. ... We're in the final, but the most difficult is yet to come. With City shaken, Benzema then won and scored a penalty in the first five minutes of extra time to give Madrid a lead they would not relinquish. But, as dramatic comebacks against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea have already shown in this season's competition, Madrid are never to be counted out.

Real Madrid vs Man City: Ratings and analysis as Rodrygo-inspired ... (iNews)

The Brazilian winger came off the bench to score twice in injury time to set up yet another remarkable comeback victory for Carlo Ancelotti's side.

And in Luka Modric and Karim Benzema, they have two of the very few players who can keep their heads in that atmosphere. It was the first time in the competition’s history that a player had scored twice in the 90th minute of a knockout game and were it not for the broad frame of Ederson, he could have had a hat-trick. They were 2-0 down on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain with 30 minutes remaining, 4-3 down to Chelsea after 80 minutes of their second leg and three times trailed by two goals to City in Manchester. Thought you’d seen all their greatest tricks? It was the Frenchman who settled the contest, but Rodrygo who won it. With the 90 minutes on the clock, the Brazilian was on hand to set up a nerve-jangling ending, tapping in at the far post after Karim Benzema had knocked the ball across goal. And in the blink of an eye, the comeback, another comeback was on, this time Rodrygo nodding into the top corner with the aid of a deflection.

Champions League Real Madrid vs Manchester City Player Ratings (We Are Hooligans)

Real Madrid pulled off a historic comeback against Manchester City in the Champions League. Here's how each of the individual players performed...

Bringing him on to try and hold onto the lead was a decent idea, but once Madrid levelled it, Gundogan struggled to find his place. However, he would have to leave the game in the 72nd minute having picked up a bit of an injury. He continues to make his case for the Ballon D’Or with strong UCL performances. Overall, he had a good game in his role as more of a holding midfielder. When he was brought off just before Madrid began their comeback, his attacking presence was thoroughly missed in extra time, as City were searching for a goal. In the first goal, he could have done arguably a bit better, as Ederson was caught somewhat out of position while the ball was played in and he fell to his knees. However, Dias’ most costly error was when he mistimed his slide on Karim Benzema inside the penalty area; it was frankly quite a needless challenge to give away the penalty, which proved to be the game-winner that sent Real Madrid through to the finals. In the second goal, Ederson merely watched on as Rodrigo’s header soared past him, and on the penalty, he was sent in the wrong direction. It’s about coming to a club where you know you’re a part of something much greater than yourself.”pic.twitter.com/IH53Pyw7ha Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City took the lead at the Beunbau and were well on their way to their second Champions League Final in back-to-back campaigns. It appeared to be all over as we reached the 90th minute, and that’s when the giant that is Los Blancos came to life and turned the fixture on its head. Two goals scored by Rodrygo almost one minute apart from each other in the embers of the game saw the tie go into extra time.

Get a report of the Real Madrid vs. Manchester City 2021-22 UEFA Champions League, Semifinals football match.

Indeed, City were inches from putting the result beyond doubt when substitute Jack Grealish beat Courtois only to see Ferland Mendy desperately clear the ball off his own goal line.

Pep Guardiola: Man City boss admits Real Madrid Champions ... (Sky Sports)

Man City collapsed at the Bernabeu as Real Madrid pulled off an astonishing late comeback to reach the Champions League final; City boss Pep Guardiola: It ...

If that had happened, City might have been narrow favourites to beat Liverpool in Paris, just as they are to win the Premier League. If… Instead, Guardiola must lift his players, refocus them in the knowledge that the trophy that has again eluded them - the one they craved - is gone for another year. That is a thought that will be far away in the Spanish capital but will need to return quickly. Another chance missed when he appeared to have a team capable of winning this Champions League, ending his own 11-year wait for the biggest prize in European club football. He had surprised some by asking Ilkay Gundogan to do Rodri's job in the following year's final. He had tweaked the system and been eliminated by Lyon in 2020. When we were able to equalise, we had a psychological advantage in extra-time. If the ball had ricocheted back off Phil Foden at a slightly different angle for the first chance. "This will have a positive impact on the Real Madrid players but I don't know about us really. And in that moment we did not have the feeling that we were in trouble because of the way they attack. "It happened, they scored a goal at the end. It will be a fantastic game for football."

It was his 10th goal in the knockout stage alone, tying Cristiano Ronaldo’s record in a single season. Madrid looked defeated near the end of regulation before Rodrygo scored his goals two minutes apart. “I cannot say we are used to living this kind of life, but what happened tonight happened against Chelsea and also against Paris,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said.
