AC Milan 1-0 Fiorentina: Rafael Leao strikes late as Rossoneri claim ... (Eurosport.com)

AC Milan secured a vital Serie A victory in their hunt for the Scudetto, as a late goal saw off Fiorentina 1-0 at the San Siro.

The winger then runs at the defence, before finding the net with a low effort from inside the box! His pass out the back from a goal-kick goes straight to Leao, but he still has a lot to do. The forward does not opt to shoot, but instead lays the ball off to Leao on the opposite side. Milan knew they needed to capitalise on Inter's midweek late defeat away at Bologna to open up a bigger gap at the top of the table, and it was not looking likely. He is a key part of how Stefano Pioli wants his side to play. The Rossoneri created quite a few clear-cut opportunities, but they were not taken.

Brest survived the first-half dismissal of Romain Del Castillo to beat Clermont 2-0 with Lilian Brassier and Steve Mounie netting. Granada stay in the bottom three – one point behind Mallorca and Cadiz – but Darwin Machis’ equaliser in the second minute of stoppage time may yet prove crucial. AC Milan player ratings against Fiorentina: Rock-solid Tomori ... (Forza Italian Football)

STADIO SAN SIRO (Milan) – AC Milan took all the three points against Fiorentina through Rafa Leao's late goal on Sunday but, once again, they have to thank…

The former Chelsea defender proved impossible to outspeed and won an impressive number of duels, preventing the Viola from keeping possession in the final third of the pitch and discouraging their offensive players from going one on one against him. If Milan had more than 80 minutes to find the opener against Fiorentina, credits go to their four-man backline and notably Fikayo Tomori, who handled the likes of Artur Cabral and Nico Gonzalez. Despite their difficulties in front of goal, Mike Maignan and Tomori cancelled out almost every Viola threat, making it hard for the visitors to keep the ball in their opponents’ half and therefore helping Milan’s growing pressure.

AC Milan vs. Fiorentina - Football Match Report - May 1, 2022 - ESPN (ESPN)

May 1 (Reuters) - AC Milan's Rafael Leao took advantage of a late goalkeeping howler as the Serie A leaders went five points clear at the top with a 1-0 win ...

After a goalless first half during which Milan failed to hit the target, the hosts missed a gilt-edged chance to go ahead when Leao skied his shot from close range two minutes into the restart before Theo Hernandez's half-volley also sailed over. Fiorentina almost grabbed a shock lead in the 75th minute but Arthur Cabral's header was brilliantly kept out by Mike Maignan before Leao made up for his earlier miss by calmly slotting past Terracciano. With eight minutes left on the clock, Leao latched on to a misplaced pass from Fiorentina goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano and strode towards the goal before firing in a low effort to keep Milan in the hunt for their first league title in more than a decade.

AC Milan is on track to win Serie A after goalkeeping blunder (The Indian Express)

Ivan Perisic put the Nerazzurri ahead early by redirecting in a corner with a header. That mistake helped Empoli to a 3-2 comeback win and virtually eliminated third-place Napoli from the title race. Two wins and a draw in Milan’s remaining matches would be enough for the “scudetto” — no matter what Inter does. “It’s the greatest moment for a footballer — to score a decisive goal,” Leão said. Attempting to clear following a throw-in, Radu instead kicked the ball toward his own net and Bologna’s Nicola Sansone had the final touch to make sure it went in for the winner. Following inexcusable errors by Inter Milan’s and Napoli’s goalkeepers in recent matches, AC Milan was the beneficiary of a massive mistake by Fiorentina’s ‘keeper in the final 10 minutes of a 1-0 win Sunday that kept the Rossoneri on track for their first Italian league title in more than a decade.

AC MILAN v FIORENTINA: MATCH PREVIEW (AC Milan)

San Siro is ready so let us take you right up to kick-off at 15:00 CEST.

The reverse fixture this season was a thriller with a bitter ending: goals, excitement and a dazzling Ibrahimović performance (brace) gave way to a 4-3 win for the Viola. In general, this is the 164th meeting between AC Milan and Fiorentina (74 wins for the Rossoneri) and the 82nd at San Siro - the Rossoneri have beaten Fiorentina at home 48 times. We have the quality to stay in the European places, where we've been since the start of the season. They love to wait for the right moment to strike so we will need to control the game and make the right choices while in possession. The starting striker should be Cabral, who is higher in the pecking order than Piątek (one of three former Rossoneri alongside Bonaventura and Saponara). Fiorentina come to San Siro as AC Milan look to maintain their grip on top spot in Serie A. We have compiled our usual Match Preview to give you all of the low-down on our matchday 35 fixture. The Club's management showed their support at Milanello this week, timely too as there was more good news in the full recovery of Bennacer. How the midfield will line up depends on whether the Algerian players or not, otherwise there shouldn't be any surprises in terms of team selection.
