- The 4-5-1 experiment against Liverpool in December didn’t work at all, but as linked in the bullet point above it gave birth to Box-to-Box Joe. Newcastle didn’t really jell until the end of January, so it’s not that doing something similar this Saturday would put Newcastle at a disadvantage from the get-go. It’s going to be a murderers row for the next week-and-change featuring Reds and Sky-Blues in the schedule. - Not many surprises in the rest of the lineup, if any at all. Or maybe the best way of getting an upset W is just going blow-by-blow against the Reds, fighting them with offensive fire, and trying to get away with a City-esque victory by 5-4 or something close to that. Even against a rested Pool that will have been off football fields for more than two days, the defensive effort and offensive efficiency are going to be more than needed. Barring an outlier 0-5 defeat away at Tottenham, this bunch of lads have not conceded more than one goal in a single game getting back to Dec. 19th (!!!) when City put four of them past Martin Dubravka. Something is clearly working, so there might make sense to put the clamps on Liverpool, forget about the offensive side of things, pull a Villarreal off, and hope for the best. Speaking of jokes, Liverpool is coming off a 2-0 win against Villarreal in a game that was more of a trouncing than the final result lets you know. Klopp will come out with all guns blazing trying to take over the first position if only for a few hours until City inevitably defeats Leeds and retakes the leading spot. Because, just in case you have not been paying attention, this is how things have gone of late, and since we flipped the calendar page to this the year 2022 of our lord. Yes, they have 15 games played, more than Liverpool and City, but they have also dropped three games and just a couple of draws instead of defeats would have them evenly distanced from Pool and ManC in this leaderboard. Any and every casual fan would think that his two-team run is going to last until the very last day—the very last second, even!—and they wouldn’t be that wrong about it. At the end of the day, Liverpool and Manchester City are the class of the football world: the two are first and second in the Premier League, lead their respective Champions League semi-finals, and in the case of Pool they have already won a title while still in contention for three more trophies.

These are long-awaited days for the Geordie faithful. Bruno had to wait until March 10 for his first start but he’s been a big hit and is class act. Howe made some interesting changes for their trip to Norwich last weekend. Jonjo Shelvey mainly sits as the deepest midfielder and he looks inspired by having Bruno beside him. All have made major contributions — I involve Trippier in that because he helped the team kickstart their comeback before his injury, including scoring a winner against Aston Villa. Howe arrived in November when the club were joint-bottom with Norwich on a meagre five points from 11 matches.
If Liverpool are to stumble in their pursuit of Manchester City then it might just be against in-form Newcastle.

Andre Marriner is the one to oversee this fixture, his third in charge of a Liverpool contest this season – the Reds were winners on both occasions. With every match a must-win from here on out, the club record is going to take some beating in the future, once it’s secured! It’s been one incredible season to date, and heading into the month of May with three trophies still on the line is nothing short of a dream. Liverpool have, so far, played a total of 55 games across all competitions and have the chance to make that the maximum of 63 in the coming week. “We have a team in the best age group but time is running, we have to prepare the little things so we are ready for the future as well. It’s a testament to the incredible season he is having, one that could be embellished further by inflicting further misery on Howe. “We want to offer emotion, we want to deliver excitement that you can really buy into, we want to be really together with our people, we want to really be connected and we want to be special as well as a club. But the manager is to have Kostas Tsimikas back in the fold after missing Wednesday’s game due to illness, while Curtis Jones will have to prove his fitness after a similar issue to the left-back. The caveat, we hope, for this time around is that Liverpool goes on to take all three points, as they did back then, but pip Man City at the post to the title! The club could not be in a more enviable position both on and off the pitch, but at 12.30pm on Saturday it is only three points that matter.

Jesse Marsch's side have kept successive clean sheets and conceded just four goals in their last five Premier League games and have Kalvin Phillips back at the base of their midfield. Graham Potter continues to do a fine job with limited resources at Brighton. His teams do not win enough but his ability to improve footballers and his tactical flexibility is going to land him one of the big jobs one day. Midfielder Ruben Neves has returned to training this week but is not deemed to be fit enough for the weekend. Also, McNeil has had more shots (42) and more shots on target (12) without scoring than any other player in the Premier League this season. If you have been backing the over goal-line in Saints games this season you will be swimming in profit and it's not time to ditch that theory in a game involving two teams that can play with the shackles off. His side have won just two of their last 22 games in all competitions and have amassed the fewest home points (7) of any team in the top four divisions of English football. In the home defeat to Brentford, Watford became only the third team to lose 10 consecutive top-flight home games in a row, after Birmingham City in February 1986 and Sunderland in August 2005. With such two sturdy defences on show in this game and Klopp's men in 'job done mode', there is plenty of juice in backing Liverpool to win a low-scoring encounter. Aggregate scores can be a pretty flimsy way of collating a strong opinion on a team but in their last 11 games where Newcastle have taken 25 points the aggregate score in those fixtures are just 16-11.

They are just in that zone. Also, the way the Reds are playing makes me think they will get the result they need, no matter who is in their team. The problem there is that Liverpool are at a different level to any of the sides Newcastle have just beaten - the Canaries, Crystal Palace, Leicester and Wolves.

Aside from the obvious, a major positive can only be helpful for the side’s mentality as they have a tight turnaround between the Wednesday Champions League semi-final first leg and the early match on Saturday (a turnaround which will no longer be scheduled next season, out of fairness for teams competing in Europe). Fabinho is a likely candidate for a rest in this one, and one of the fullbacks is probably due: Tsimikas could easily step in for an on-fire Andy Robertson, but Trent Alexander-Arnold might see himself rested given Tsimikas’ recent injury and the fact that Joe Gomez got a few minutes on Wednesday. We’re in a good frame of mind.” They signed one of our analysts [Mark Leyland] which for sure is a big part...[years ago the] whole stadium was on fire and [we] have to expect that again tomorrow. They are a more solid defensive side than Eddie Howe sides of the past, looking to concede fewer counter-attacking goals than Howe’s Bournemouth did.

Catapulted from the relegation zone to ninth place after netting 38 points in 23 games, Newcastle meet Liverpool off the back of four consecutive wins with the fans in full voice. It's cleared safely, but reveals intention: Newcastle can have fun with the aim of taking something here today. Challenge by Targett on Diaz leads to a throw-in very close to the Newcastle box. Liverpool firmly in control now, and a wide ball from van Dijk to Gomez just by the Newcastle goal illustrates the point well. Gomez fouls Joelinton, dragging him by the armpit to the ground just inside the Liverpool half. Newcastle push to get their equaliser this side of the break, with Guimaraes and Saint-Maximin testing Liverpool on the box's edge. Any attempt to move it further is spoiled, but the ball goes behind a Liverpool corner. Newcastle have around ten minutes for a turnaround, but Liverpool are so good at holding onto possession. Salah receives, and misfires, before Newcastle send the ball out of harm's way. He falls to the ground, and play is immediately stopped for a head injury. But now Saint-Maximin has a chance, breaking past the Liverpool defence to set up Chris Wood, the only man in front of him. He protests it was a Newcastle foot which sends the ball out of play, and on the replay, could be correct, but it's a goal kick now.
Jurgen Klopp's decision to make five changes was vindicated as Naby Keita's first-half finish sent Liverpool to the top of the Premier League.
“If it is a positive sign for the boys, then great, but I don’t think this will be the one decisive thing for whatever decision they have to make. “It was difficult, the only plan they had obviously was long balls to our right side… “I thought Joe Gomez was different class and like Milly (James Milner) said we need everyone in the squad. Sandwiched between those two chances was a rare Newcastle effort on target, when Alisson denied his Brazilian compatriot and Newcastle’s man of the moment Bruno Guimaraes with a comfortable save down to his right. Much to Klopp’s frustration, Liverpool continued to be wasteful in front of goal, with Jota firing straight at Dubravka when a calmer head was required. At the other end, Jota drew a spectacular stop from Dubravka with a powerful header that is quickly becoming his signature move.

Sadio Mane squandered another promising Liverpool attack in the 60th minute, pushing his effort wide of the goal after a terrific run from Joe Gomez down the right wing. The midfielder finished off a slick move on 19 minutes, which started with a James Milner challenge on Fabian Schar that Newcastle thought was a foul. Despite Liverpool's dominance, Newcastle looked spritely when they had the ball, and came close to finding an equaliser in the 87th minute when Guimaraes found space on the edge of the box and fired a low shot, but Alisson covered it well and Liverpool held on to secure the three points.

FULL TIME: Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool – Naby Keita is the hero as his first half goal was the difference in a tight, tense game.
Liverpool momentarily moved top of the Premier League table as they won 1-0 at Newcastle to keep their quadruple hopes on track.
The ball dropped to Naby Keita who controlled and took it past a few players before slotting home as Liverpool deservedly led. There is a control about this Liverpool side which is very reassuring for fans but they did waste a lot of chances in their last few wins. They do have a clear starting XI but the players who are rotated in and out of the lineup don’t have an impact on the level of the team. No matter how much they dominate games like this in the final few weeks of the campaign, the pressure will be on and they may not run away with wins. The 1-0 scoreline was flattering as they were dominated and barely create a chance. Keita, Milner, Gomez and Jota all came in and did their job with minimum fuss and the strength of this Liverpool squad is scary.

In a few situations we could have done better, but at this time of the season it’s all about getting that win and moving on. My job is to use the squad when they are available and that's what we do. "The position we’re in, challenging on all fronts, it proves you need a good squad. "Individually I don't think we hit our top levels, which meant collectively we didn't quite hit the levels we have recently. It was a similar story in the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Benfica. They’re on fire at the moment so we knew it wasn’t going to be easy. On making five changes for the game: "I don't think about the next game, but I know you cannot ignore that. His energy and intensity is proving invaluable for Liverpool as the season enters a crunch period. But this was just the latest in a run of impressive displays. We’ve just got to keep that mindset going and, in three days, go again." In the heart of defence we were light on bodies. Keita's eye-catching all-round display made him the game's stand-out performer.
