More than the charm or the comedy, it is the quieter moments that truly elevate Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal, even if it is just a couple of feet above ...
The imagery of a drenched Rambo sitting on the middle of the road slurping on icecream not knowing whether to laugh or cry, and Anirudh giving us a pathos number elucidating the same felt more real than the reams of dialogues that Vijay Sethupathi rattles on in the name of two, I mean, true love. But just like the entirety of the film, the gags that preceded this act too blew hot and cold without really settling down on a consistent tone. But more than the charm or the comedy, it is the quieter moments that truly elevate Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal, even if it is just a couple of feet above ground level. In fact, Kanmani and Khatija are only given the illusion of choice and are just living in Rambo’s world. It just wasn’t ingenious enough. And when the right guy comes at the right time to say the right things with the right look in his eyes, bam! The film begins in an almost folk tale-ish way and it establishes the idiosyncrasies of a young Rambo, who is considered to be the ill-omen of his entire village. It just wasn’t gratifying enough. If doing the same things, again and again, makes Vijay Sethupathi deliver a scene like the “long drive” with Nayanthara and redefine charisma with his effervescent screen presence in montage numbers like Naan Pizhai, then so be it. It just wasn’t endearing enough. It is the Appa-Amma conundrum all over again, and writer-director Vignesh Shivan weaves a tale about a man refusing to take up responsibilities and two women who almost allow him to get away with it because he did the bare minimum. “Appa pidikkuma, amma pidikkuma,” and we would bashfully say, “Rendu perum.” But then there does come a time when our heart knows the truth even if we still prefer saying “rendu perum”. Some might call this indecisiveness, some others might call it being sympathetic, and the rest might just call it 'playing smart'. Now… is Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal’s Rambo (Vijay Sethupathi) indecisive or sympathetic or just a smart alec who wanted to have not just one cake, but two, and eat it too.

The scenes of Nayanthara taking care of her sister and disabled brother and how Sethupathi forms a bond with them is beautiful and probably Shivan could have explored more on that. Trouble begins when reality hits and he is forced to make a choice between his two lovers. What happens when he is forced to make a choice? A major saviour of the film is Anirudh, who makes it a passable experience with his foot tapping numbers and emotional background score. Just when we expect things to take a serious turn, Shivan waters it down with a humourous take. Though the storyline is simple, Vignesh Shivan creates a separate universe for the three main characters with interesting back stories.
And what's the most disappointing part? The director's overconfidence that his film will work since it has a starry cast. Here's our review. Roles.
Well, in short, nothing has worked in favor of the film and you may give it a royal miss. And, if you like Shivan, the film will leave you upset. Also, it hurts when a new-age filmmaker like Shivan falls prey to the taboos long broken in Tamil Nadu. For instance, widows in this film are clad in white sarees! Even though the Vignesh Shivan-directorial is sub-par, the plot throws plenty of opportunities for the film to take flight. The director's overconfidence that his film will work since it has a starry cast. but after watching the movie, we felt that we should just Let it go.
Director Vignesh Shivan's Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal is a film about Rambo falling in love with two women at the same time. With a morally flawed concept ...
Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal deals with platonic love, but the route it takes is extremely problematic. But, it really isn't. Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal is no different from all Selvaraghavan's films where the heroine needs to babysit the hero and heal him. The director is also self-aware. And he feels lucky when he falls in love with two women, Kanmani Ganguly (played by Nayanthara) and Khatija (played by Samantha), at the same time. It is about Rambo (played by Vijay Sethupathi), who is made to think that he is the unluckiest person in this world. Years later, he is a cab driver and when he meets Kanmani and Khatija, he falls in love with both of them.

Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal movie review: Vignesh Shivn's film--which stars Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara and Samantha Ruth Prabhu--is funny but problematic ...
In spite of the comical treatment, it is problematic when the film expects audiences to empathize with a hero who needs two women to fix his problems because he grew up with a lot of insecurities. Vijay Sethupathi is at his effortless best on screen, and alongside both Nayanthara and Samantha, we get some lovely moments between the trio. If the film’s central idea doesn’t bother you, you’re in for a lighthearted entertainer that’s strongly aided by the lead performances by Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who make this work with their effortless screen presence.
Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kadhal movie review: This film is Vignesh's wishful dream about an average Joe becoming a chick magnet.
He wants to keep the film safe for people to watch it with family. This film aims to play into the wild fantasies of a lovelorn man by subtly sexualising the leading ladies. Sumaar Moonji Kumar, meaning an average Joe, is the name of the character played by Vijay Sethupathi in Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara (2013). He had played the role of a stalker in the movie. By simply stepping outside and gazing at the sky, the rain comes to a complete stop. Vignesh sort of creates the Rambo-is-the-last-man-alive-in-the-world situation. It takes a lot of big-heartedness to buy into the premise of this film.
In the Vignesh Shivan directorial, Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal , Anirudh Ravichander shines better the actors and the director.
But the major problem with the film is that instead of focusing on Rambo being a cheat at large, the film keeps questioning Rambo’s urge to choose both of his choices. The repetition of certain dialogues felt unnecessary and few cinematic moments that were created could have been more impactful if it wasn't extended even after their purpose was served. For instance, Nayanthara takes you on an emotional ride in a car scene, Samantha connects with you in a bridge scene, and Vijay Sethupathi convinces you of his easy innocence. All three have solid sequences to prove their mettle – highlighting that they are some of the best stars topping the charts in the industry right now. Rambo gets stuck between morality and his platonic love for the two women. The story revolves around Rambo (Vijay Sethupathi) who feels like he is cursed with bad luck.
