Kane Tanaka (who was born in 1903) was recognised the oldest living woman in the world in 2019 when she was 116 years old.

"Birthday wishes," the tweet (in Mandarin) read. "Oldest living person record holder Kane Tanaka from Japan has sadly passed at the age of 119," the post read. She turned 119 early this year and was just three years away from the record of the oldest person ever Jeanne Louise Calment (who passed at 122 years of age in 1997). Guinness World Records recently took to its official Instagram handle to confirm the news.

Government figures released in July 2020 showed that women have a life expectancy of 87.45 years compared with 81.4 for men. Tanaka had been living in a nursing home in Fukuoka. Her family said she kept her mind and body engaged by doing math and remaining curious. Tanaka's family said in a tweet earlier this month that she had been frequently sick recently and "in and out of hospital."

She was born in the Fukuoka region on January 2, 1903 — the same year the Wright brothers flew for the first time and Marie Curie became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.

Kane Tanaka was born in 1903, the same year as George Orwell and when Roosevelt was US president.

More than a quarter of society are aged 65 or older, with diet, healthcare, and the fact many older people continue to work into their later years identified as reasons behind long life expectancies. Also in the year of her birth, Theodore Roosevelt was US president and Edward VII was British king. She got married a century ago, and had four children.
