We had 70-75 per cent of the ball and they have to defend and that is not easy. “Centre midfield with (Nemanja) Matic and (Bruno) Fernandes is not how you want to play. They are not in a good moment and on top have a lot of injuries. When Jurgen Klopp came, they changed at the club and lifted not just the team but the club and city to a new level. “It is not a normal situation. The way they stay and applaud us, they deserve more.

Manchester United don't even belong on the same pitch as ... (ESPN)

"Liverpool is ready for the title. We are not," said Man United's Bruno Fernandes. That is quite the understatement, writes ESPN's Rob Dawson.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson used his first touch to swivel past Fernandes and calmly pass out to his defence while United goalkeeper David de Gea's first contribution was to punt the ball into the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand under no pressure at all. "That is what needs to happen with us in the next transfer windows. "I don't need to be here saying about the difference of the level. There has to be a rebuild for sure." That's the same number of trophies in one season that United have won in nearly a decade. They smell like success, by the way, something the away fans who travelled from Manchester might not experience for a while.

Ralf Rangnick branded Manchester United's performance in their 4-0 defeat to Liverpool as "embarrassing, maybe even humiliating."

"We are competing until the end," Fernandes said. "Liverpool is ready for the title. "When we defend we had a clean sheet here and a clean sheet there, so they make our life easier. We just have to admit they are better than us." "Especially the first half we were just not up to it. "They have better players than we have, and this was really reflected by the result today," added Rangnick of Klopp's Liverpool. "There will be a rebuild for sure, that was obvious in the first three or four weeks for me.

There remains work to be done before Salah gets the extension at Liverpool that he needs to further cement his legacy and continue scoring goals for fun and collecting silverware. For Salah, his brace is far from the only thing that he has to smile about right now. Salah knows there is nowhere better for him to be playing this season.

Andy Robertson has said he's relishing Liverpool's push for four trophies after their 4-0 hammering of Manchester United.

"When we lost the ball our reaction was incredible. "If you can't have fun at this period of the season with what we're doing then you're in the wrong profession," said the Scotland captain. And speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after the Reds dispatched of an awful United outfit, Robertson said he is cherishing the challenge.

Jürgen Klopp has developed an unstoppable dual weapon to make ... (Liverpool.com)

Liverpool won in very different ways against the two Manchester clubs this week. It was proof that Jürgen Klopp has developed a lethal Premier League ...

Teams like Manchester City rightly trust themselves enough to play out from the back and leave space in behind, but Klopp has plenty of reason to trust that his press and his ‘red arrows’ can exploit such a style. He lined up in what was essentially a 5-4-1, and packed the attack and wings with pace in an attempt to hurt Klopp on the break. Having first held Manchester City to a draw and then beaten them in the cup, Liverpool followed that up by imperiously brushing Manchester United aside. Manchester United are an imperfect example of the varied tests facing Liverpool, because they are a weak side with delusions of grandeur. It is often said that the Premier League is the best league in the world. There are the titanic clashes with other top sides: the sort Liverpool and Manchester City twice played out over the course of the last fortnight.

Erling Haaland is set to prove Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool genius ... (Liverpool.com)

Man City are reportedly closing in on signing Erling Haaland for £63m. The transfer provides two key issues which are inescapable, and prove Liverpool's ...

But the nature of the Haaland deal just magnifies how good a job Liverpool have done in stopping City from complete domestic domination over the last five years. Recent research by CIES revealed that City’s net spend since 2012 has been £984m, and they are second in the table for the highest spend. They won’t break their wage structure for Mohamed Salah, who’s scored over 150 goals for the club in less than five years, let alone for a 21-year-old. Since Chelsea won the Premier League title in 2017, if it isn’t City winning it, it’s Liverpool. The last five seasons have seen the two sides share the EFL Cup too. City’s wealth has of course been the subject of controversy for years. Dortmund, by contrast, will only earn around £63m from the deal, due to a release clause in Haaland’s contract.

If it is that same midweek, it will be the Wednesday given Manchester City are playing on the previous Sunday, which means Liverpool will be up first again. Meanwhile, Liverpool supporters will have to endure another six versions of the Manchester City 90 minutes as well as their own side's games — hopefully this time with a different outcome to three years back. Liverpool's draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last week means that it remains out of the Reds' hands.

"It is one of the happiest days as next season we will be in the Champions League," said Guardiola. "People take it for granted but we have to be in the Champions League. When it happens mathematically it's because we have done really well. City will need everyone -- particularly key players like De Bruyne and Dias -- if they are going to hold off Liverpool and safely negotiate these next six games while also trying to win the Champions League for the first time in their history. If we don't win all the games, Liverpool will be champions. They might need a bit more here on Saturday, particularly if Watford are as organised and resilient as Brighton. This time City get to put the pressure on Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp's side not in action until 24 hours later against Everton at Anfield. "It happened three years ago, we won 14 in a row to be champions. When Bernardo Silva scored the third on 82 minutes, the home supporters finally got up the courage to chant "champions, champions, champions."

Liverpool are still competing for a further three trophies on top of the Carabao Cup claimed by Jurgen Klopp's side in February.

The winner will face one of Mafra or Tondela in the final of the competition and would be overwhelming favourites to come out on top. Porto now sit nine points clear at the top of the Portuguese top flight with four matches remaining, moving one step closer to their end goal following Sporting Lisbon's defeat to local rivals Benfica on Sunday evening. Into the semi-finals of the Champions League, the final of the FA Cup, and battling Manchester City for the Premier League title, there's every chance it could be a debut campaign to remember for Diaz. Talk of a quadruple has only increased with each passing week, though there could be an even sweeter end to this term for the Reds' new recruit.

Blood Red: Liverpool and FSG Masterplan EXPLAINED | Transfers, Contracts, Jurgen Klopp, Youth Stars and Anfield. Blood Red: Liverpool and FSG Masterplan ...

While the Rossoneri are just beginning the arduous journey back to the very pinnacle of the game, the Reds are already there. There would have to be departures before such a transfer was even countenanced, and even then a younger age profile would likely be preferred. They have built arguably the best side in world football, more than holding their own in a landscape of big-money takeovers for other clubs, and are now an attractive transfer destination for Sterling and essentially anyone else. FSG took over a club still reeling from the disastrous tenure of the previous owners, and had to set about rebuilding. Sterling was a key figure at Manchester City, and has gone on to become their 11th-highest scorer of all time, just four goals off the top 10. In reality, however, prior to their inclusion this season, the Italians had not been in the tournament since 2013/14. It was the first time since FSG took over at Anfield that the two historic giants had even been in the competition together, let alone faced one another.

Sadio Mané was excellent against Manchester United in the 4-0 win, and it may jus have given a hint as to where his future lies with the club beyond this ...

He’s scored 14 league goals in 29 games this season, and should he play through the middle on a permanent basis from next season on, he could easily score 20-plus, in addition to the other competitions. Mané contributes to the team play a lot more than Jota does, who when he isn’t scoring, doesn’t contribute in the way Mané or Roberto Firmino would through the middle. But what made the move so good was that he didn’t even look for Robertson — he just knew he’d be there, such has been their understanding over the years. Mané also swept home Liverpool’s third after a smart cutback from Díaz, and his finish wasn’t easy as it was bobbling off the Anfield turf just a fraction. simply couldn’t live with him, let alone Salah and Díaz. The 9-0 aggregate scoreline from both Liverpool-United games this season flattered United in truth; it easily could’ve been so much more.

Failed Jurgen Klopp offer, £95m transfer mistake and how Liverpool ... (Liverpool Echo)

Liverpool beat Manchester United 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday and the gap between the clubs has rarely looked wider.

For the many reasons listed above, it’s going to be a long road for them to travel before they’re competing on an even keel with the Reds again. In the last four years, both Alexis Sanchez and Cristiano Ronaldo appeared destined to join Manchester City, only for the Red Devils to swoop in and take them to Old Trafford instead. Far more is expected of defenders at elite clubs and the lack of structure around Maguire has hampered his ability to perform well. He’s still yet to lose a league game at Anfield and Liverpool have become champions of everywhere since he signed. They have to work hard to earn success and are then rightly rewarded for their efforts. Enter Virgil. As an example of how they’re not perfect, Liverpool made a mess of their first attempt to buy the Dutchman from Southampton, but they bided their time and got their man in the end. So reticent is he to take credit for the success he has helped the club to enjoy, it was a genuine surprise to hear from him when he announced he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of this season. The Frenchman rejoined United in the summer of 2016 for a fee of around £95million. That’s more than Liverpool spent gross, never mind net, on new players that season. The Reds needed a top defender, but also one who would align with how Klopp wanted his team to play. A quick glimpse at the league table would suggest that the gap between Liverpool and Manchester United isn’t that large. Klopp wasn’t entirely convinced by that sales pitch — he found it a bit ‘unsexy’, he told a friend — but he didn’t dismiss the proposition out of hand either.” Never mind unsexy, that sounds positively vomit inducing, and anyone who knew the slightest thing about Klopp’s outlook on life would know such descriptions would be unlikely to appeal.
