They will be favourites to go through, and continue their search for a first European crown. Pep Guardiola’s side of course hold a 1-0 lead from the first leg at the Etihad, thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s second-half strike. The Blues already know who their opponents will be should they finish the job against Atletico tonight.

Follow the action from the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium as Manchester City seek to reach Champions League semi-finals.

End to end already! Llorente charges forward down the right and nearly finds Felix in acres of space inside the box but Walker manages to hook the ball away with a rather sloppy clearance. Felix finds Lodi on the left where there is so much space for Atletico early on here. The deficit is only one goal and City will have to be close to their best to ensure they reach the next round. De Bruyne scored again on Sunday as City where held to a 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the Premier League, leaving them top of the table and on course to regain the title they won last season. Pep Guardiola’s men lead 1-0 on aggregate after Kevin De Bruyne’s strike earned them victory last Tuesday night at the Etihad Stadium.

A fairly mistake-laden start in midfield so far.

They will be more intense in the top half of the field than they were the other night." “In recent years City have been on the brink and the most important thing is that they don't give up,” he adds. Everyone saw it on the replay just moments after it happened and it should have been a penalty and it would have been awarded quickly but no. Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester City: What Simeone can learn from ... (CBSSports.com)

Unsurprisingly, Atleti finished with 0.00 expected goals since they did not record a single shot, which is the wrong kind of record to set. How rare was that?

It's unlikely, especially with the personnel, that they will be able to greatly increase their possession, and the expectation will be for Manchester City to score. Atleti have to be ready, quick to move the ball into space and show the quality they have in attack. Atleti, out of any team, have the ability to turn this around and pull off a shocker, but expect City to score. They need to rediscover their aggression, believe in their defense with less numbers and simply get more men into attacking situation as early as possible. It's obvious that the approach will be different at home, but if they miss the mark again with whatever changes they make, they'll simply be reduced to spectators the rest of the way and see their European dream elude them once again. Much too often it was either Joao Felix or Antoine Griezmann in no-man's land, surrounded by sky-blue shirts and with the only option being to try and draw a foul. Unsurprisingly, Atleti finished with 0.00 expected goals since they did not record a single shot, which is the wrong kind of record to set. They've done it to Liverpool, Bayern Munich and plenty of others with Simeone having two UCL final appearances and a pair of Europa and La Liga titles to his name. They regularly had all 11 players behind the ball but could not get the result they wanted because City prevented Diego Simeone's attack from functioning properly in what proved to be, tactically, his most challenging match of the season. Atleti are not a team that possess the ball much. As a result, no one is seems to be convinced that they can turn this tie come Wednesday during the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano (3 p.m. ET A 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad last Tuesday was far from ideal as the reigning La Liga champions could not even produce a single chance on goal.

Diego Simeone's side will, of course, be set up to frustrate the Premier League leaders and Pep isn't the kind of coach to play for a draw. Manchester City don't have a great record in Spain, returning victorious just three times from their past 11 games in the country, but Atleti haven't won at home in the Champions League since October 2020. The Argentinian boss has made one change to the team that faced City in the first leg, with Thomas Lemar named instead of the more defensive Šime Vrsaljko.

City ran the gauntlet in the Wanda, experiencing the gamut of the Atletico Madrid experience. So when Ilkay Gundogan hits the post from seven yards and has a diving header blocked two seconds later, everyone shrugs and says “Well yes, that makes total sense”. From the 20th minute until half-time, they had three-quarters of the ball and all of the control. They pressed in the final third and – more surprisingly – were successful with it. The Wanda Metropolitano is new and less characterful, but it also contains some of Europe’s best stadium acoustics. The first 160 minutes of this two-legged tie was nothing but window dressing, Diego Simeone’s team positioning themselves for a final assault and Manchester City hoping to have a lead to repel them with.

Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester City takeaways: Simeone's dark arts ... (CBSSports.com)

Three things we learned as City march to the Champions League semifinal.

City are considered to be one of the best teams in Europe, so it's only fitting that they have to defeat one of the best teams in Champions League history as they look to win their first title. In the 91st minute, Felipe took down Phil Foden to get his second yellow card and an early shower, but not before the benches cleared in a coming together from the players as they pushed and shoved each other. The clash would also rear its head in the tunnel after the match with words being exchanged and at least something being thrown which could lead to a fine from UEFA. Jack Grealish and Stefan Savic took center stage during that skirmish, as the two exchanged words which resulted in Savic yanking Grelish's hair. It was quite the difference as the first half saw City take eight shots to Atletico's one but only producing an xG of 0.61. They embody the fiery spirit of their manager and will do whatever is needed to wind up the other team and hope that they're frustrated enough to make a mistake.

Felipe sent off late as Manchester City battle past feisty Atlético Madrid (The Guardian)

Manchester City held on through a fractious second half to draw 0-0 with Atlético Madrid and progress to the Champions League semi-final.

City had gone close from an early corner, Stones heading high, and they created the big chance of the opening period in the 30th minute. From the restart, they pushed high, bringing the aggression and they had numerous flickers in front of goal, which the home fans were ultra quick to get behind. Felipe had left him dazed and bloodied after jumping into him in a 12th minute aerial challenge, wiping him out with a ferocious upper body barge. The heart-in-mouth moments for the travelling City support continued to come. Grealish had called Savic the C-word during the melee, which led to Savic grabbing his hair. With Foden down, all hell broke loose, another Atlético defender, Stefan Savic, trying to lift him to his feet and being shooed away by Oleksandr Zinchenko, who was an unused City substitute, as everybody converged.

Police had to intervene after an ill-tempered end to Atletico Madrid's 0-0 draw with Man City in the Champions League spilled over into the tunnel.

It's a game with a lot of pressure and I don't really know what happened to Felipe, but it's not pleasant." I was with the players, applauding the fans," Simeone said in his postmatch news conference. I think it was bad for them because they were in their best moment in the game." "But those of us who maybe have a smaller vocabulary, we're not so stupid. "People came on from the bench, there are a lot of nerves, it's normal that there's pushing and some bad words said. "The game can make you mad like that, when you're putting them under pressure and creating chances, and they're going down, wasting time," Atletico captain Koke said, when asked about the red card and the fracas that followed.
