Manchester City v Liverpool short on global pull but Premier League ... (The Guardian)

The biggest game of the English season will draw a lower audience than el clásico but the top flight attracts the best numbers across the campaign.

Manchester City v Liverpool may not be the most watched match in world football, but the Premier League is a global hit every weekend of the season. The Premier League in its entirety is the compelling product and it is not only American broadcasters who think so. But it is also the case that NBC would not have committed such money if the investment were defined by a single fixture. El clásico, meanwhile, is a match of historical importance regardless of where Real Madrid and Barcelona are in the league table. We’re used to hearing that the Premier League is an international product, that it’s watched in “188 of the world’s 193 countries recognised by the United Nations”. The Premier League does not share international viewing figures on its games.

Liverpool's season is riding on the next three fixtures, starting tomorrow with a title-decider against Premier League champions Manchester City.

An injury to Ruben Dias is a big miss for the home side and was key to their title-winning success last season. Manchester City, on the other hand, are missing both Ruben Dias and Cole Palmer. Every point matters at this stage in the season and having players missing from your squad could have a huge impact on each match.

The front three is anyone’s guess, but that just feels right to me. Phil Foden may earn a start up front for City, accompanied by Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez. Foden started on the bench for City’s midweek Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. However, when he came on to for Mahrez, he immediately set up the game’s one and only goal. Currently, City have 73 points to the Reds’ 72. Liverpool briefly overtook Manchester City on the top of the table for a few hours, the first time they’ve managed that feat since October.

It is as hard to pick a difference between Alisson and Ederson in this game as it is in the battle to be Brazil's number one, not least because both Liverpool and City look like impressive defensive forces on current form. For all the drama that this rivalry brings the truth is it has been a rather one-sided contest over recent years with Pep Guardiola winning seven and losing just one of the last 12 top-flight meetings. If City doesn't pay attention, he could knock in a goal as well to add to his five on the season. A top of the table clash like few others the Premier League has delivered in recent years, Liverpool's trip to Manchester City on Sunday could be the match where the title is decided. Most likely to score a goal for Liverpool: Sadio Mane. While all the attention is on Mohamed Salah, and now Luis Diaz, Mane somehow finds a way to slip past opposing defenses. His cameo turned the tide against Atletico Madrid in midweek, and he will surely be rewarded with a start and then seems well-placed to deliver.

And all that noise can inflate the draw to a backable price, which it has done here at 13/5 with Sky Bet. He looks to have improved his ability in getting into more dangerous areas of the pitch with a return of eight Premier League goals this season to show for it. That matches his best return in a Premier League season and he still has 10 games to go. This is a fixture to get the pulse racing. No player in the Premier League without a goal in that period has managed more shots on goal than Mac Allister (25) with seven of those coming in the 0-0 draw with Norwich. On another day he could have had a couple of goals to his name as two of those efforts were just a whisker away. Even without factoring in the Antonio angle, the case for a home win is strong based on Brentford's performance metrics at their own ground this season. That is a fair sample size and one we should take huge confidence from when assessing the goal-line in this fixture. I don't have faith in Norwich in the match result markets but Milot Rashica is a player I'm warming to. He'll be tested up against Raphinha in this one and I like his price of picking up a card. What is in their favour here is that one goal probably will be enough to beat Brighton, who have failed to score in six of their last seven Premier League matches. His performances have reached another level over the past two months to such an extent he started his first match for Argentina in their World Cup qualifier with Venezuela. He'll be tasked with keeping a lid on Sancho and that looks a battle the United winger can win.

After all, their £100million man Jack Grealish is yet to really excel in his City career... City are strong, of that there is no doubt; they have an abundance of riches and talent at their disposal both in the starting XI and out of it. Pep Guardiola's side have kept 18 top-flight clean sheets in the current campaign, a figure matched only by Liverpool. Which, like Liverpool, leaves City with tough choices to make in terms of selection. If Salah is in positions to score, he eventually will. will worry about the form of Salah when these opportunities cease to exist. Either way, whoever does miss out, will certainly look to have an impact upon their arrival in this mouthwatering match-up. City will look to play their possession-based and attacking-minded game, especially since they are at home; Liverpool may have to be patient in their quest to dominate the game and get comfortable on the ball. He is one of the best finishers in the league and it still baffles many that Liverpool had a clear and uncontested route in signing the Portuguese player. Thiago Alcantara is a superstar; he is a man on top of his game right now and could very well be the key to unlocking the City defence, as he has done to so many other teams this season. Ibrahima Konate had a very impressive first half in the week against Benfica, scoring his first goal for Liverpool to put them in the driving seat in the second leg, but his second-half display lacked the same precision and success. The Reds would go on to win an astounding ten Premier League games in a row and watch City drop points against Southampton, Tottenham and Crystal Palace. The gap is now a solitary point that separates the two best teams over the past decade.

If Manchester City is to go close in the title decider, then Ederson at his most agile will continue to be required. This weekend it is going to be a big clash between 2 of the best goalkeepers in the world. This season Manchester City is at a better defensive due to the team winning the ball back from where they lost it. 1 in holding clean sheets for this season is all set for Sunday’s Premier League Clash with Manchester City. His ability to save both close-range and long-range shots makes him one of the most exciting goalkeepers in recent times. The dribbling abilities that he possesses could be a nightmare for the opponents and treat to eyes of the audience. The match in Manchester is being billed by many as a title decider, with a City win giving them a four-point lead with seven games to go while Liverpool would overtake their rivals by two points with a victory.

Foden, the flanks and key battles that will decide Manchester City v ... (The Guardian)

The role of Phil Foden, the space afforded to Trent Alexander-Arnold and the struggle to control the wings could all be vital.

But at Anfield they had 52% of the ball and while it’s possible, perhaps even likely, that figure will be higher at home, it is hard to see City’s control of the ball being anything like enough that Alexander-Arnold is not a threat. Both have subsequently modified their approach so Thiago Alcântara, a longtime Guardiola favourite, will probably be in the Liverpool midfield, while City are more direct in transition than Guardiola’s Barcelona. But this remains a battle between the two major schools of modern football: those that prioritise retaining possession and those that prioritise regaining it. With Kyle Walker suspended, João Cancelo switched to the right in Lisbon, with Nathan Aké in at left-back, but the Portugal international will surely return to left-back. But the issue is rather that his way of playing, which gives Liverpool such potency, is predicated on a functioning and aggressive press – which is probably the main reason that Alexander-Arnold, for all his ability on the ball, is not Gareth Southgate’s preferred choice for England. Foden surely will play against Liverpool – but it may be that he is used as the false 9, the position occupied by Jack Grealish at Anfield. Almost no matter where he is on the field, Alexander-Arnold simply cannot be given time to cross.

City and Liverpool have been masters of tweaking their blueprints while redesigning what it takes to win the top flight. "You can't have the same ideas of 12 or 13 years ago, you become lazy, and you are not scared. "Always you have to make some evolution during the process. "We don't have a proper striker, but it is what it is. And the preparations are a bit different, you know, especially because they do something that no other team in all around the world do - the movement they have. England's champions, one point ahead of Sunday's opponents Liverpool - their foes in the FA Cup semi-finals and an obstruction to their Champions League ambitions - are under enormous pressure amid the possibility of a treble. But at the end, I still sleep, wake up in the morning, have breakfast, lunch, dinner… "Now I handle situations a little bit more calmer. 'wow, this is the game'. You know it, we know it. Maybe I should feel the pressure now, but I don't." We are fortunate to live in this moment.

Liverpool are a team of warriors though and they are giving their all now, trying to raise their level.

Here's Jamie Carragher on the fixture: "Liverpool versus Manchester City has become the greatest, most intense and highest quality rivalry in English football history. It is consumed with the governance of football, of the motives of ownership in the modern age and the credibility of a certain kind of success. Anyway, increasingly, this is the defining fixture of English football, and the likes of Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal feel a long way back, playing for the minor places at best. City are incredibly strong in possession, but they have the fewest conceded in the League." And a big save from Alisson. A sweeping move from Man City, rapid attack down the flank, De Bruyne sending Jesus through. We are here to try to win a football game, which is difficult because the opponent is really good. Liverpool cope with that. In off the post. Ooh Liverpool are living dangerously. Van Dijk has got the positioning spot-on, and clears that for a corner. They are pressing City back. For a second there it looked like Ederson had got too clever and was going to let that run into the net!

City v Liverpool: Walker returns as Guardiola makes three changes (Manchester City FC)

Pep Guardiola has made three changes for Manchester City's top of the table clash with Liverpool.

- Liverpool have won each of their past 10 league games, keeping eight clean sheets in the process. - PhilFodenhas scored in each of his past three appearances against Liverpool - the only player to net in four successive top-flight games against the Reds is Jamie Vardy, who did so in five consecutive fixtures between 2016 and 2017. - RiyadMahrezis aiming to become the third City player to score in six consecutive Premier League home games, after Uwe Rosler in 1994 and Alvaro Negredo in 2013. - The Reds have not kept a clean sheet in any of their past 11 league matches at Etihad. - City have lost just one of our last 12 Premier League home games against Liverpool (W7 D4), going down 4-1 in Jürgen Klopp’s first visit to the Etihad in the competition in November 2015. Guardiola admitted he expects his side will have to defend in spells against a side boasting an incredible amount of firepower, so the return of one of his most trusted lieutenants in Walker is a welcome boost.

From Mo Salah to Gabriel Jesus, the top-of-the-table Man City-Liverpool clash didn't necessarily go as expected. Here are the key talking points.

It would be a blow to lose a player who is again on course to score 30 goals in all competitions again this season but it isn't the nightmare scenario some are predicting. Liverpool have recruited well to bring in Jota and Luis Diaz to ensure there isn't an over-reliance on Salah and it means, should the Egypt international depart, they are ready-made replacements to fill the void. There is no doubting what Mohamed Salah gives to Liverpool but they are far from a one-man team. Despite being the only recognised striker in the City squad, Guardiola has had success playing him on the right wing in the past. The Brazilian has only scored seven goals all season but the majority have been big ones. Here are three thoughts on the game.

Sadio Mane's second-half strike promises an end to the season that could be as breathless and brilliant as this 90 minutes at the Etihad.

Golden chance in the third minute of additional time could have won it 6/10 In truth, it was a brief interlude of Liverpool success into a first half that showcased exactly why Guardiola’s side have set the running in the title race. Subbed off on 75 minutes 6/10 When it arrived, City’s second goal was the kind of moment in which De Bruyne makes things look devastatingly simple. Within the first five minutes City had found a series of angles that hauled Liverpool way out of their comfort zone. De Bruyne is no stranger to providing sorcery on the biggest of occasions but this time his magical left foot was aided by an almighty deflection off Joel Matip that deceived Alisson. The four goals were excellent but it was the speed of thought of the protagonists on either side that impressed the most. Andy Robertson found space and Trent Alexander-Arnold with a wonderful cross which invited Diogo Jota to sweep past Ederson. How else to evaluate the situation after a game laced with as much danger for the respective defences as this one? If Erik ten Hag was watching on in Amsterdam, he might be thinking twice about signing the contract Manchester United have prepared for him. And for the second time in three seasons, you could see both of these blue riband contenders winning every single one of their remaining league matches. We have to be nearly perfect to beat this team in a game and over a season as well,” Klopp said.

If there was one we could draw it was today. We knew it in January. We had to win 18 games. It was a good game for our fans, Liverpool fans, fans in the UK and around the world. "If we win today, we are two points up, that changes nothing. Containing this team for a whole game, even for the Premier League champions, is almost impossible. "Heads up, I said to the team after the game, I don't want one second of sadness. I will have to review the game but I have a feeling we missed an opportunity. City had more of the ball and more shots. It was tough for Klopp's team for much of that first half and yet they scored a goal against City and were almost through on a number of other occasions. In the final minute, substitute Riyad Mahrez curled a free-kick wide of the post. But they played so well at the Etihad Stadium that there were chances to extend the lead. The goalkeepers were prominent in the game, making saves and making mistakes.

Manchester City and Liverpool meet at the Etihad Stadium in a Premier League summit meeting that could decide the title and set the tone for the rest of the season. “I wouldn’t say I’m thankful that City is that good but it didn’t deny our development,” said the German, whose side have not won in the league at the Etihad since 2015. Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have been involved in some epic battles in recent seasons, in particular in 2018/19 when City pipped Liverpool to the title by a single point despite a record points haul for the runners-up.

Manchester City vs Liverpool player ratings (NBC Sports)

Manchester City vs Liverpool player ratings: How fared best (and worst) as the defending Premier League champions played the Reds to a thrilling 2-2 draw?

Mohamed Salah: 7 – Put his diagonal through ball, setting up Sadio Mane’s goal, in a museum. Rodri: 6.5 – It wasn’t a game played at a tempo that fit Rodri’s style and strengths, but he’s a vital piece of the operation and remains undroppable for that fact. Trent Alexander-Arnold: 7 – TAA almost requires an attacking rating and a defensive rating at this point, for being so brilliant at the former and absentminded when it comes to the latter. He repaid the faith Guardiola put in him to start such a big game after struggling for regular starts. The amount of quality on display resulted in lots of 7s and 8s being handed out. Guardiola wasn’t going to be beaten that way.
