Chimaev and Burns may well have put on the Fight of the Year on Saturday night in Jacksonville.
"I wanted to be 11-0 with 11 finishes. Chimaev popped back up to land a huge combination before a brawl ensued with Chimaev soon bleeding from his nose. "I go against the odds, I don't care. I won't stop." Just 15 months after he lost a shot at Kamaru Usman's welterweight title despite dropping the defending champion, the 35-year-old Burns routinely answered the huge strikes of Chimaev in order to hold his ground. This is just what I do for work to make money.
At UFC 273, Khamzat Chimaev defeated Gilbert Burns via unanimous decision in a dramatic welterweight bout.
With the victory, Chimaev continues rocketing up the UFC ladder toward a title. Burns was widely-regarded as a leap up in competition for "Borz," who has now won all five of his UFC fights inside the distance. As the final horn sounded, Chimaev laid on top of Burns but wouldn't let go. Burns shoved him off and Chimaev landed an open-hand slap - all after the horn. Another giant Burns punch floored Chimaev to the canvas. The first round played out as many of Chimaev's fights have in the past.

Khamzat Chimaev (11-0) made his much-anticipated return to the Octagon against Gilbert Burns (20-5) at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.
Chimaev still pressuring and Burns is all heart. Chimaev really content to a kickboxing match now and Burns goes for another single-leg but Chimaev is simply too big and strong for that. Burns stepped in and Chimaev caught him on the chin and now Burns is on his back and Chimaev with hammer fists. Chimaev landing some counters of his own, but Burns landing more. He’s against the fence and Chimaev is unloading shots! Burns is taking over with volume on the feet and he’s got Chimaev reacting to feints. Chimaev now starting to switch stances a lot and he’s getting his jab off. Burns has his wits but he’s swinging back from the bottom and Chimaev keeps hitting him. Burns still up against the cage and trying to move but Chimaev staying on him and landing a few shots. Burns gets up but is dragged back down, and Chimaev takes the back briefly before Burns escapes. Chimaev throws two teeps to back Burns up and then shoots a double. Burns even getting the jab going and he seems to have some timing down.
It was a breathtaking and fast-paced battle and showed Chimaev belongs in the upper ranks of the welterweights.

'Craziest fight ever watched': UFC stunned over bloody 'war'
“Who’s the famous fighter? Who’s the most people [talking] about? Those guys don’t know how to get up, the other ones didn’t know how to wrestle. And that he did. “I don’t see a monster. You either make it through or you don’t. He made it through with flying colours.”

Khamzat Chimaev is still undefeated, but he is clearly not invincible. The Chechen-born Swede returned to the UFC's Octagon in the middle bout of the UFC ...
Now we know he can take a hard shot. And while all three scored the fight in Chimaev's favor, it was clear as the decision was being read that something had changed. But we didn't know how he'd respond when the early finish failed to materialize. Given the way both men were fighting, it was frankly shocking that the judges were required, but that's the way it happened. Entering the fight, the widespread belief was that Chimaev would slice through his more experienced foe, whether he got the job done by way of knockout or submission. Despite their dwindling energy reserves, the pair continued to fight with extreme intensity for the entirety of that final round, pelting each other with punches that most likely would have stopped lesser fighters in their tracks.
Khamzat Chimaev had arguably the first real test of his career at UFC 273 and he passed with flying colors with a unanimous decision win over Gilbert Burns ...
When the final horn sounded, Chimaev embraced Burns as they left it all in the cage with the Jacksonville crowd praising their performances. Burns continued to attack with stinging combinations that started twisting Chimaev’s head around as the undefeated prospect was hurt for the first time since coming to the UFC. Burns looked wobbled at times but then he just started winging shots in return and Chimaev was forced to respect his power. Chimaev followed up with some heavy shots from the top but Burns scrambled out of a bad position to return fire on the feet before the first round ended. The welterweights brought the best out of each other over 15 minutes with Chimaev cut, bleeding and hurt at times but he also returned fire in every exchange as he stunned Burns several times on the feet. Burns eventually got back to his feet where he began establishing his striking arsenal including a stiff leg kick and a couple of hard left hands that backed up Chimaev momentarily.
Chimaev had a more difficult time than he did in his first four UFC wins, but he proved he can beat an elite foe.
Will anyone ever steal the show from the 27-year-old Chechnya-born Swede? If he does end up in the cage with Covington, as the UFC would like, Chimaev (11-0) would surely be a crowd favorite, but what would the oddsmakers say? Chimaev clearly had proved to them that he belongs in the top tier. Saturday was a big night for fighters proving their worthiness of the exalted place they already hold in the sport. All champions in all divisions are called upon to prove themselves every time -- but for Sterling the demand was more so. He dropped Burns with a crisp jab, and from top position on the canvas he dropped punches and elbows, one of which opened a cut on the Brazilian's head. He even looked ahead to Chimaev's next one, saying that if the Chechnya-born Swede defeated Burns, the UFC would try to book him against Covington on a rare network TV show. When UFC president Dana White went on SiriusXM radio to promote the pay-per-view, he spoke just a little about Alexander Volkanovski's main event featherweight title defense against Chan Sung Jung. He said not a word about the co-main bantamweight title bout between champ Aljamain Sterling and former champ Petr Yan. Instead, White spent much of his time talking about Chimaev, "somebody that people are very excited about." And despite Burns' lofty credentials and Chimaev's relative inexperience at a high level, many had no hesitation in predicting a Chimaev win. Standing across the cage from Chimaev on Saturday was a fighter on a whole different level. This time he was in a competitive fight. Burns had been bloodied and beaten down in a brutal opening round, but he had survived. A 124-2 edge in total strikes in his UFC debut.
This guy has star written all over him and with his performance Saturday in a breathtaking battle with Gilbert Burns at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in ...

Khamzat Chimaev addresses what he did wrong against Gilbert Burns, paying respect to the first opponent who pushed him to a decision in a back-and-forth war ...
“From the beginning, I tried to knock him out. “I said everybody. “Actually, it was a little bit hard to fight him because I see his kids, they come to me ‘you fight my daddy’ and I said, s***, f*** I don’t need that. “I love my face bloody and sweaty and kick somebody, punch somebody. “Before, I didn’t get that fight. I needed to let him up and knock him out again. I tried to knock him out. I loved it. “I was saying to everybody all week I was going to knock him out in one round. My coach told me all the time, you love to throw down and work more technical. Burns not only survived but stormed back in the second round with a series of powerful punches that opened a cut on Chimaev’s face and wobbled him during a couple of exchanges. Next time, I’m going to work to be a little bit smarter.
The win over Gilbert Burns on Saturday was the Chechen's first UFC fight to go three rounds, but it proved to be more valuable to him than another quick ...
“That was going into the third round. The three-round affair was thrilling from start to finish and earned both men the evening’s “Fight of the Night” bonus. Chimaev said it also provided him with valuable lessons as well, the kind that are often gained through defeat. Chimaev clearly demonstrated that he’s one of the absolute best welterweights in the world, and sometimes being pushed to your limit is even more valuable than simply dominating an overmatched foe. “From the first second to last second, I tried to finish him, you know? I’m going to knock him out.’ I tried to knock him out, you know?
“I will fight everybody,” he said (ht MMA Junkie). “Of course, if [Covington] doesn't call the cops, if Dana White doesn't go to jail, I'll be happy to fight, ...
Covington is coming off a unanimous decision win over Jorge Masvidal at last month’s UFC 272. After that he spent a long time on the sidelines battling severe symptoms of COVID-19. With his win over Burns, Chimaev can expect a big leap forwards in the UFC’s welterweight rankings. Eventually, Chimaev decided to reveal something a little interesting when asked about who he wants to face next. Chimaev didn’t have it all his own way, but despite being bloodied and bruised in the contest he managed to prove that much of the hype behind him was well-placed. Khamzat Chimaev proved he’s one of the top welterweights in the UFC last night.
The past pair of fights with Jung and Brian Ortega have represented a turning point for Volkanovski. His determination, confidence and championship bravado have ...

Khamzat Chimaev may not be superhuman anymore after his UFC 273 win over Gilbert Burns, but he's still going to be UFC champion by the time his story is ...
Hell, she just defeated the division’s most reliable high-level gatekeeper in a bout where her bread and butter was only able to set the tone for a single round. As for a next step, I understand why Sterling and the UFC are eyeballing T.J. Dillashaw as the next challenger to his throne. 4. Few sights in MMA are more harrowing than watching a strawweight get trapped in the jaws of death that is Mackenzie Dern’s ground game. Pound-for-pound is always a fairly stupid and subjective argument, but it’s getting harder to deny Volkanovski as a top three, top two, or even top one talent in the sport. Sterling has been the butt of the joke for more than a year now, ridiculed everywhere he went, largely due to factors outside of his control. I don’t hate it, but I also don’t love it, partly because Dillashaw should’ve lost his return against Cory Sandhagen on any reasonable scorecard, and partly because it feels iffy to reward an admitted cheater with a title shot after just one indecisive fight back. That’s obviously silly in retrospect — Sterling and Yan have now fought for nine rounds and the majority of those rounds were competitive. Really, it was a boxing stoppage — and Dean did Jung a mercy, because the outcome was only headed in one direction. It was the perfect way to settle us all down and ground Chimaev’s path a bit more in reality. But his heart, his chin, his recoverability, and most of all, his gameness — they’re all on a world-class level as well. That’s why Saturday was probably a necessary result in the long run. Chimaev is now a card-carrying member of the club — he’s one of the best welterweights on planet Earth. It’s a fact.
Khamzat Chimaev is down to fight anyone and everyone in the welterweight division after cracking the top five with a win over Gilbert Burns at UFC 273.

In contrast to his previous UFC bouts, Chimaev had a difficult time with Burns, losing the second round and and the fight in some fans' eyes. The end result was ...
We’re in Jacksonville, Fla., with a Russian and Brazilian [as] the biggest fight of the night, and everybody’s going crazy, so I think it’s a big fight.” This is s*** you can’t train for, and you either make it through it or you don’t. He made it through with flying colors.” The end result was a “Fight of the Year” candidate and, according to UFC President Dana White, one of the best fights ever. “It’s one of the best fights I’ve ever seen, it’s one of the coolest fights I’ve ever been to,” White said at the post-fight press conference. Chimaev did get the win, but MMA fans are harsh critics. On Saturday night at UFC 273, Chimaev won a unanimous decision over Gilbert Burns in a hard-fought contest.
Fighters had a lot to say about the Khamzat Chimaev vs. Gilbert Burns fight on the UFC 273 main card Saturday.
