The Masters is officially underway at Augusta National. That's our favorite sentence of the year, and we're more excited than ever.
8 a.m.: The ceremonial first-tee shots were pushed back about a half hour to let the remaining wet weather pass through. Last to hit is Tom Watson, joining the first-tee ceremony. 8:39 a.m.: The first group is off—and we have our first birdie. The 86th Masters Tournament is now underway! With all the rain, we suppose the committee knows it needs to challenge competitors on Thursday. We'd still expect low scores if the wind isn't too bad in the afternoon. He was making jokes, doing his signature kick, and hitting one down the fairway. And players like Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris—who might have a sour taste in their mouths after close calls last year—are among the favorites. The Masters is officially underway at Augusta National. That’s our favorite sentence of the year, and we’re more excited than ever. Gary Player was the first to hit. Jose Maria Olazabal—out there first with J.J. Spaun—holes out on the first green and gets to 1-under. That’s not even mentioning the other favorites like Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith and Dustin Johnson … etc., etc. Rory McIlroy makes his eighth attempt at completing the career Grand Slam (he’s in the 2:33 p.m. pairing with Brooks Koepka and Matt Fitzpatrick). Scottie Scheffler, the new World No. 1, looks to keep up his torrid pace—but six players have a chance to be ranked first in the world after this week.

Hole-by-hole report: You can't win a Green Jacket after the first round, but you can lose it. Join Scott Murray for the opening holes at Augusta.
Peruse and select your winner (times BST, USA unless stated, -a- denotes amateurs) ... So make yourself a pimento cheese sandwich, pour a long cool glass of iced tea, pine for the legendary Georgia Peach Ice Cream Sandwich (missing this year due to supply-chain issues) and settle down. The 2020 champ Dustin Johnson is coming back into form. The favourite going into the week is reigning US Open champion Jon Rahm, aiming to become the fourth Spaniard to pull on a jacket in Pantone 342. It’s just the way things have to be. But here we are! Hey, we’re allowed to dream. [Tiger’s] awful accident means he won’t be here this year; here’s to the great man rebuilding his health and completing yet another fairytale comeback. The first shot of this year’s Masters was hit by the 1994 and 1999 winner Jose Maria Olazabal. That was quickly followed by this year’s first birdie: Ollie creamed a fairway wood pin high to 15 feet and rolled in the putt. To the top of the nascent leader board! -1: Harrington (6), Higgo (4), Migliozzi (4) Back he drops into a share of -1.
Five-time champion Tiger Woods competes for the first time since his near-fatal car crash. Follow for live updates at the Masters.
After parring the first two holes, Spaun had a double bogey on the third hole and bogey on the fourth. He chipped to within 10 feet, then made the putt to begin his round with a par. -- shirt, black pants and black hat, the five-time Masters champion worked through the clubs in his bag, testing out his irons first before moving to his woods. He left the tee shot short and then tried for a long putt, but left that short, too, before he made par. Fans were seated several rows deep in the area, and several of them had to pick up their chairs and clear out briefly while Scott first located his ball and then hit his shot. But, then on the fifth, Tiger's approach off of the tee, from 218 yards out, was a thing of beauty. He easily sank the birdie putt after his birdie chance on No. 5 lipped out. His birdie try was on the right path, but he left it just a touch short, forcing the two-putt par. Tiger Woods pulled out a 3-wood once again off the tee, this time at No. 7. With 213 yards to the pin, Tiger gave himself a great look at eagle, finding the green just 24 feet away. His second shot stayed left and again he found the patrons. Even if he does all that, will he be able to play at the elite level needed to make the cut and continue to the weekend?
All eyes will be on Tiger Woods as he returns to the Masters on Thursday at Augusta National. Follow along as we track his first round here.
11:12: a.m.: Tiger lucks out when his drive ends up just short and right of the fairway bunker that guards the dogleg on 1. His attempt at a big cut ends up just short of the bunker in front of the green. He’ll have a great look at his first birdie of the day. Tiger goes first and nearly makes a hole-in-one, with his ball hopping once then stopping a two feet short of the cup. It lands just short of the green and check up instead of forward. And even more troubling: looks like he grabbed his back a bit on the follow-through. 1:34 p.m.: Tiger is in the pine straw but looks like he has an opening to the green. 2:39 p.m.: Tiger slings a nice 3-wood into the fairway on the 13th. 1:51 p.m.: Tiger has 178 to the hole. The hole is playing 155 yards today, and Tiger fires his 8-iron safely on the green. 3:25 p.m.: Tiger lays up to ~120 yards in the left gallery. Gets a free drop in the rough and advances the ball up toward the green.
Englishman Danny Willett, who has struggled at Augusta since winning the Masters six years ago, shoots 69 to open the tournament.
In closing, Willett was asked if he felt like he had anything to prove given the paucity of his Masters performances since his 2016 peak. Even if the course gets longer, you still remember certain breaks, certain putts that guys who have played it only a couple of times might not see or might not know. Still, when I did get out of position a couple of times, I hit into the areas where I had the best chance of getting up and down. It doesn't mean they're going to pay off the next three days either, but it's always nice to get a good start around this place.” It obviously doesn't mean I’m going to hit them, but it's always nice when the things you've been working for and what you've been working at pay off. It's impossible for the players, and I think it's impossible for the 25,000 patrons who come and walk round here every day.
