Dasvi movie review: Abhishek Bachchan film has some great ideas ... (The Indian Express)

A craven babu (Chittranjan Tripathy) who has served Chaudhary and is now busy yes-ministering his wife, is the butt of bureaucrats-are-no-good-jokes, and a couple of them land. Another is dubbed ‘anti-nasional’ (national), and yet another ‘liberal ki aulaad’. For a film to topline a newly-minted ‘ dasvi pass’ politician whose electoral plank is ‘free education’ is in and of itself a hugely subversive idea, given the current state of the nation. Abhishek Bachchan has the rare gift of not taking himself seriously, and is a perfect match for the kind of character he is playing: it’s a pity that the material never quite knows whether it is an exaggerated parody or a sharp comedy with realistic overtones. Furious Khap leaders are shown swallowing a ‘mixed marriage’, giving Chaudhary a chance to militate against ‘jaatiwaad ka jahar (zeher)’: all of it gets done in a jiffy, without any pushbacks. It has the feel of a modest resort, with Chaudhary disporting himself in a room with mod cons and gadgets, watched over by an obsequious jailor (Manu Rishi Chaddha). All the inmates are orderly and well-behaved, no bristling gangs, no reception committee, zero scary incarceration feels. The only one who barks orders is the newly-arrived prison-in-charge Jyoti Deswal (Yami Gautam), and everyone falls in line, except of course our hero who roars, till one fine day, he begins purring.

Review: Dasvi will have you yawning in class (Livemint)

This Abhishek Bachchan-starrer about a jailed politician who sits for his high school exams is tedious and dated.

But she’s the closest thing in this film to an actual unfeeling, power-hungry politician; Ganga Ram Chaudhary is sentimental whitewashing. The graphics in the Twitter-storm montage—a dreaded mainstay of social media-era Hindi cinema—are stunningly amateur. Chaudhary is soon behind bars in a teacher recruitment scam, but not before installing his wife, Bimla Devi (Nimrat Kaur), on the CM’s seat.

But the hackneyed writing loses that gist somewhere in the middle of the film. But the actor’s potential does not find a conducive space to shine through, especially in the context of his last few films of 2021 — Bob Biswas and The Big Bull — that didn’t impress too much. Here’s hoping that the junior Bachchan also gets better scripts to show what he is capable of. The idea is particularly capturing in a country where less than half of its politicians are literate and yet, hold iron claims over the political hierarchy. Dasvi is apparently based on the former chief minister of Haryana, Om Prakash Chautala, who was found guilty of a recruitment scam and served his sentence at the Tihar jail. In Netflix’s Dasvi, Abhishek Bachchan manages to own the film with his natural talent.
