In 2016, the actor disappeared from the outside world to recuperate and his daughter had politely explained that Jimmy did not want to be disturbed. In fact, he and Taiwanese actor Ko Chun-hsiung (柯俊雄) established a union for the industry’s martial artists and stunt doubles. Some state that the actor had ties to the Triads. There were also rumours that he once stepped in to rescue fellow martial artist Jacky Chan (成龍) from a mess involving the Triads. However, regardless of his past, he still loved movies. Although Jimmy started his career in 1963, his role in “The One-Armed Swordsman” in 1967 had been the springboard which kickstarted his popularity. Many had been impressed and captivated with the ease Jimmy handled fights in the movie with only his left hand. She went on to add that he had passed away at the age of 80.

Wong, 53, said she and her family will miss her father, who had been unwell in the last six years. The film led to two sequels - the 1969 movie starring Wang and The New One-Armed Swordsman in 1971, which stars John Chiang and Ti Lung. The film broke the million-dollar box-office record for Shaw Brothers and earned Chang the title of "Million-Dollar Box-Office Director". Chang died at 79 in 2002.

For many fans like me, he represents the vibe of a certain era. In 2019, the Golden Horse Film Festival honored the veteran actor with a Lifetime Achievement Award. It was presented by renowned Taiwanese-American director Ang Lee (李安) to Carol Wong (王加露), who accepted the award on behalf of her hospitalized father. He started his acting career in Hong Kong before emigrating to Taiwan in the 1970s and appeared in more than 60 martial arts films, many of which were considered vintage.
