Twenty Five Twenty One: An emotional masterpiece; Nam Joo-hyuk ... (The Indian Express)

Twenty Five-Twenty One is a stunning, wholesome, and yet bittersweet portrayal of friendships that struggles to stand the test of time.

Yet, with a little bit bit of love and friendship, you might find a reason to hold on. The tension and suspense about the fate of the protagonists kept building slowly from the first episode, reaching a crescendo till the finale, that had atoms of sweet, in so much bitter. While the romance felt consuming, the beauty of the show was that it was about so much more, that by the end you just feel rather drained and exhausted. The ending almost feels like a diabolic betrayal and I almost didn’t want to accept it, because I refused to believe that after eight weeks of wholesomeness and the seeming comfort of a romcom, this would how it end. Their friendship is powerful in front of the media of both the countries that had worked hard to pit them against each other, and in one of the most heart-wrenching scenes of the show, they break down and hug after the match. The restlessness, and desire for answers sets in early in the show. We’re all Kim Min-chae by Episode 14, trying to piece the puzzle together, bawling at the separations and the reunions of our lead couple. The suspense is too much to bear, and the innumerable theories thrown by fans on Reddit and YouTube are testament to that. By Episode 7, we’re dying to know if Kim Min-chae is Yi-jin and Na Hee-do’s daughter, and Yi-jin’s whereabouts in the present. It’s the time of the 90s when the world was without the internet and Whatsapp, and yet these two find a way to be of support each other via payphone calls, when they cannot be near each other.

In a conversation with her mother, Min-chae confesses that she wishes to begin ballet again, a statement which pleases her mother, who smilingly asks what influenced the decision. In darkness, he reads the diary properly, crying over the visible changes in the relationship that he sees, and finding himself affected further over his ex’s confession that she wished she spoke to him differently when they were breaking up. Afterwards, Hee-do talks to the press about her retirement, stating that her rivalry with Yu-rim is her most honourable moment. There, it’s established that they don’t really get a chance to meet often anymore (Seung-wan comments that they only meet when someone dies), as well as the fact that Yu-rim and Ji-woong are planning on getting married, and that Hee-do herself has tied the knot with someone. But the journalist also appears saddened by his own words, and that night dreams of his and Hee-do’s joy during the beach trip of the past only to wake up crying. Shortly after, it’s revealed that the fencer’s diary had been left on the vehicle, and so she asks the driver to contact her should it be found. The next day, a drunken Seung-wan greets Yi-jin excitedly, and floats around the idea that the friendship group should all get together now that Yu-rim and Hee-do are back in Korea. Before we get a proper answer, we cut straight to the catch-up, only to see that the journalist has not attended. As the mood softens, the fencer verbalises that she wishes their relationship stopped in the past, when they didn’t choose to become romantically involved. When replacing her broken phone (she had dropped it in her food), a rather unexpected nuisance arises for Hee-do. As it turns out, she can’t cancel the couple’s plan on her phone contract alone, leading to her needing to summon Yi-jin so it can be agreed upon mutually. The journalist informs his partner that he will most likely be back in Korea the next month, only to find out that the fencer is unavailable due to her own commitments in Europe. Then, Yi-jin breaks the news about his new job, and Hee-do tearily congratulates him. Of course, it isn’t a dream, and the two embrace warmly while arranging for Ji-woong to have a meal at Yu-rim’s home. When an apology comes over broken promises, the fencer wishes for him to stop feeling that way, and hangs up the phone.

In episode 14 of "Twenty Five Twenty One," Yu Rim changes her nationality and moves to Russia because she needs money to pay off her parents' debts.

Hee Do gets her lost diary back in which she had written an apology to Yi Jin many years later, only to find out that Yi Jin had found it and had written an apology for her as well. Yi Jin had given it to the bookstore owner, but he had forgotten to deliver it to Hee Do. It makes Hee Do happy to know that Yi Jin read that, and she is finally able to let go of her regrets. When Yi Jin and Hee Do were in the very initial stage of their friendship, their love bloomed even when they were apart. Hee Do and Yi Jin had let go of their grudges when they talked for the last time before Yi Jin left for the USA, and they had never seen each other after that. Could this be a possible hint at season two of ‘Twenty Five Twenty One,’ where Yi Jin and Hee Do reunite? Hee Do tells Yi Jin how she felt, and Yi Jin had seen it coming. Yi Jin couldn’t even attend the dinner with Hee Do and her mom as her boyfriend. Hee Do always leads Yi Jin to a better place. That’s when Yi Jin’s short trip to New York turns into a 6-month long stay, and that’s when the distance between Hee Do and Yi Jin starts growing. Years later, Yi Jin is seen as a news anchor congratulating Hee Do on her gold medal and marriage. Yi Jin has now been transferred from the sports department to the local news department as it rules the newsroom. With that, the reporters twist her words against Hee Do, which makes Koreans hate her even more, and their expectations from Hee Do increase.
