Breaking down LeBron James' pursuit of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's ... (NBA.com)

A closer look at how LeBron James' has put himself in position to challenge Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record as the all-time leading scorer in NBA history.

Plus, James has yet to see the type of dramatic drop-off in productivity that nearly every other player has faced as they near their 20th season. While James’ pursuit of the regular season scoring title will have to wait until next season, there is one other scoring leaderboard that he can still climb. Finding an active player that has a realistic shot at passing James may not come from the group of veterans listed above — all of whom are in their 13th season or later. Is there a player currently in the league that will challenge the record? Assuming he plays all of Los Angeles’s final six games this regular season, James would need between 40 and 45 games next season to break the record. If he can carry over his current season scoring average into next season, he would need only 46 games to break the record. James is set to post the highest scoring average of any player in his 19th season or later by a huge margin — Kobe Bryant will be second at 17.6 ppg during his 20th and final season in 2015-16. Abdul-Jabbar is now the only player left for James to chase down in career scoring. While this record marks the leader in total points scored, it is James’ consistent scoring average over the course of his career that has been key to his chase of the Abdul-Jabbar’s mark. Despite the thousands of points, rebounds and assists, James’ most indelible NBA moment remains his famous chase down block during Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals as he led Cleveland to its first NBA title. The largest gap between scoring titles by a player is currently five years (Paul Arizin 1951-52 to 1956-57, Shaquille O’Neal 1994-95 to 1999-00 and Stephen Curry 2015-16 to 2020-21) — he has a chance to nearly triple that mark. It is more than double Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring average of 14.6 ppg in his 19th season, which was the penultimate of his 20-year career.

LeBron James Tweets April Fools' Joke About His Season Ending (Sports Illustrated)

The Lakers forward said he is out for the remainder of the season.

James was clever with his tweet, since he has been out the last two games and missed a third game last week. However, there has been no other confirmation about James’s “season ending injury,” so fans automatically suspected this was a prank. But, he didn’t fool fans with his message.

The tweet, as James is probably cackling at if it is indeed a joke, almost killed multiple beat writers covering the team. Dammit. — Bill Oram (@billoram) ...

Still, stay tuned for updates as the Lakers and Pelicans get closer to tipping off at 7:30 p.m. PT tonight. However, given the timing, it is hard to believe this one without the team also confirming it with some sort of press release or announcement. James will reportedly be a gametime decision as he tests out his sore ankle before that one, and we’ll see at that point if his tweet was a joke, or actually closer to being very, depressingly, hilariously real.

Aaron Rodgers or LeBron James: Who is better to build a team ... (FOXSports.com)

Skip Bayless is more confident in building a championship team around one professional sports icon than he is the other.

I don't trust him, … but I gotta take my chances with Aaron because at least he's gonna get me there, and he's probably gonna get me the No. 1 seed. Rodgers has led Green Bay to the postseason in 12 of his 17 seasons under center. The Lakers (31-44) are currently threatening to miss the postseason for the second time in James' four years with the franchise. I think he's been pretty much a disaster in the playoffs ever since he won that long-ago, far-away Super Bowl … 11 years ago. Both Rodgers and James have earned their fair share of accolades over the years. No [Michael] Jordan. I would much rather spend time with and around LeBron, but if I'm starting a team right here, right now, give me Aaron bleepin' Rodgers.

Lakers news: LeBron James, Anthony Davis get promising update (ClutchPoints)

The Los Angeles Lakers upgraded LeBron James and Anthony Davis to questionable for Friday's must-win game vs. the New Orleans Pelicans.

Los Angeles is 2.5 games back of the Pelicans for the No. 9 seed, and 0.5 games back of the San Antonio Spurs for the final Play-In spot. The Lakers have lost four in a row, and 14 of 18 games without Davis since the All-Star break. Of the Lakers seven remaining games, six are against playoff teams — including the Pelicans, who have beaten the Lakers twice in the past month. However, the Lakers don’t own the tiebreaker against either team, and the schedule is not on their side. He’s missed 37 games this season — one more than he missed in 2020-21. He flew home from the team’s road trip early to undergo extra treatment in Los Angeles.

Lakers: Russell Westbrook on 'challenge' with LeBron, Anthony Davis (ClutchPoints)

Russell Westbrook gets brutally honest about his role alongside Lakers superstar teammates LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Be that as it may, Russ has kept his feet on the ground. The Lakers are still fighting for a spot in the Play-in game and their fate will be decided in the coming weeks. One of the most significant aspects that must not be ignored is the fact that Russ has always operated as a ball-dominant point guard. There’s no denying that Russell Westbrook is in the midst of one of the worst seasons of his decorated career. He’s been through adversities in the past and he has always shown his resilience. What has actually been quite intriguing is the fact that Russell Westbrook is currently on one of his best stretches of games this season.

LeBron James tweets he is 'out for the season' as possible tone-deaf ... (Lake Show Life)

LeBron James tweeted on Friday that he is officially out for the season as a possible tone-deaf April Fools Day Joke as the Lakers struggle to win games.

In the slight chance that this is not a joke then the season is officially over. LeBron has done that for the most part, but this team has not. Obviously, with today being April 1 and the nature of him tweeting it instead of it being reported, this is most likely an attempt at humor by LeBron James.

Anthony Davis, LeBron James return to action vs. Pelicans (NBA.com)

Anthony Davis is back from an 18-game absence, while LeBron is seeking to return from a sprained ankle that has cost him two straight games.

”It’s going to be tough to catch (New Orleans) now, with the lead they have and the tiebreaker,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. Davis had 23 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in his return from a six-week injury absence since Feb. 16, but the eight-time All-Star’s presence wasn’t enough to beat his former team. We just hung in there, and the game was back and forth.

Los Angeles Lakers get LeBron James, Anthony Davis back for ... (ESPN)

LeBron James is back in the lineup for the Los Angeles Lakers after after testing his sprained left ankle before their game against the New Orleans Pelicans ...

"We talked to our guys about and we were like, 'Look, we've all played with the street lights out before. "Our mindset is to go 5-0 in these games, and let the chips fall where they may," Davis said. We have to win these games and we have to have that approach." Ingram said that energy was felt before the game and after as well. "I don't look at San Antonio at all," Lakers coach Frank Vogel said of the final stretch. We don't play off hope and 'let's hope we win this game.' We have belief and I believe. "Until that moment, we'll know what our destiny is, but right now, we don't. So keep pushing forward." But by virtue of the Spurs holding the tiebreaker, the Lakers have to pick-up two games on San Antonio before the season's end to steal the final play-in spot. "No matter what's going on on the floor, it just feels like the ball bounces the other way. It's just the way it's been going." So that's the big picture." L. A. faced a crucial matchup against the Western Conference's No. 9 team in New Orleans, two games up on the No. 11 Lakers coming into the night.

Lakers Anthony Davis, LeBron James to play Friday vs. Pelicans (Los Angeles Times)

Anthony Davis will play in a Lakers game for first time since Feb. 16 on Friday night vs. the New Orleans Pelicans. LeBron James is also ready to play.

Possession after possession in winning time, the Pelicans looked poised. The Lakers missed half of their eight tries. While James caught fire in the third and scored 21 points, New Orleans always responded. But he missed all but one of his five shots in the fourth. And for the second time in a week, this season looks off the rails. The Lakers lost to the Pelicans 114-111 Friday night at home, the same night where Anthony Davis and James rejoined their lineup.

Jaxson Hayes had a flagrant foul on LeBron James during Friday's game between the New Orleans Pelicans and Los Angeles Lakers.

Especially on a team that is contending for an NBA Championship. He has played for the Charlotte Hornets, Boston Celtics and Knicks over his 11-year NBA career. However, I still believe that the four-time NBA All-Star can be a productive player.

Los Angeles is currently on the outside looking in with regard to the playoff picture. They have been in a free fall as of late, losing eight of their last 10 contests entering Friday night. James has missed two straight games with an ankle sprain he suffered in the team's loss to the Pelicans on March 27. The Lakers have only six games remaining on their schedule so it wouldn't be a complete shock if he was ruled out for the rest of the season — James said after the game that his ankle felt "horrible," for what it's worth — but ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Thursday that James is "hopeful to test out his ankle sprain and try to make a return to the lineup" on Friday when the Lakers face the Pelicans once again. April 1, of course, is April Fools' Day, leaving many on social media wondering whether or not to believe King James.
