This is how April Fools' Day started and some of the brand pranks ... (USA TODAY)

After the COVID shutdown curbed April Fools' Day in 2020, brands started pranks even earlier. Does it always work? Ask Volkswagen.

The announcement comes with a pretty obvious hint: "This launch is conveniently timed to April Fools’ Day." "April Fool’s Day is definitely useful as a way of breaking through the clutter of messaging most of us are exposed to," McGrath said in an email exchange. The Catholic Church also may have had a hand in bringing April Fools' Day to the fore earlier in history. By the 19th century, April Fools' Day had become a mainstay of American culture. Among last year's April Fools' best teases: Velveeta's new line of V by Velveeta's beauty products including moisturizer and night cream. Back to Volkswagen's name change stunt, the company eventually confessed on March 30, 2021 that the announcement was an April Fools' joke. At the time, White House spokesperson Mike McCurry played along, the Inquirer recalled on last year's 25th anniversary of the stunt, saying, “We’ll be doing a series of these things. The joke feature wound up attached to many emails, unintentionally, and had to be turned off. "Even before widespread social media, this caused a major stir," McGrath said. But it turned out to be a poorly played joke. So how did it become a time for jokes and pranks? It's the latest twist on a holiday that has its beginnings centuries ago.

But thankfully, the paper was good enough to explain later in the same article that it was a joke. As Associated Press reported at the time and BBC itself admitted that the broadcaster had to apologise for weeks to many of its foreign subscribers who got in touch to claim Big Ben’s hands. The broadcaster soon came clean on the story, revealing it to be a prank. When the office of two US senators called up Taco Bell and the National Park Service about the news, the company issued a statement confirming that it was an April Fools’ prank. This was enough to trigger debates among experts outraging against the Alabama legislature’s ‘decision’. Thanks to a growing popularity of emails at that time, the story went viral on the internet. And some even called up BBC to ‘reveal’ how they felt floating in the air. The reason given was that Taco Bell purchased it “in an effort to help the national debt.” Stensson went to great lengths to explain (in what sounded like technical terms) that the nylon stocking would bend the wavelengths of the TV and turn them into colour. It takes the boredom out of everyday work.” In France, where it is known as Poisson d’Avril (April Fish), a prankster sticks paper fish on the back of their unsuspecting victim and runs away screaming “Poisson d’Avril!” at the top of their lungs. Some claim that this tradition of pulling off a practical joke on friends and strangers can be traced to the ancient Roman period. [S]omeone ‘leaked’ the [video] to a client who wanted to be booked on the ‘show,’ leading to some ruffled feathers and an awkward conversation.” The HR department announced that “strict action will be taken if anyone will try to create a crisis with such kind of activities,” he concluded. He was in the middle of a crucial meeting with senior management about the company's overall income. Rank Secure’s Labunski said the lessons that should be learned from these examples “are that people take what they see in print, hear on broadcast, and even are told by those within their companies seriously. “The joke happened in 2001 when server Jodee Berry thought she won a new Toyota. She was given a Yoda doll instead when she went to pick up her car. He observed that “The idea of April Fool's Day may have passed for most corporations. She called him and told him someone was robbing the store. Also, the rebranding wasn't deliberate or interesting enough to be seen as ridiculous, which I think has to be the basis of a corporate April Fools joke. Make sure it's a joke that is related to your brand and not a joke about your brand. The last thing you want for your brand on April 1st is confusion, and that's exactly what Volkswagen created. And the National Park Service, which houses the Liberty Bell, received hundreds of phone calls from furious Americans,’ the Philly Voice reported. “We will be doing a series of these things," McCurry joked.

• When Larry Scott took over as then-Pac-10 commissioner in 2009, he decided that Walnut Creek, where the conference had its headquarters, wouldn’t do. “And if you earned anything beyond that dollar amount, what they considered to be (the) full academic scholarship, you had to pay it back. “Back before this deal passed, you were still only allowed to earn a very small amount of money from an outside job during the school calendar year. What on earth kept them? It wasn’t a one-time publicity stunt. You might have seen the clip: Lee coming out of the stands, holding a beer in one hand and his glove with the other, uniform shirt untucked, only to strike out an opposing hitter with his high-arcing eephus pitch. Getting three points out of a possible four in Edmonton and Calgary this week, rallying both nights and doing so with a lengthy injury list should bode well going forward. • I wonder if we’re obsessing over the wrong L. A. team as the postseason nears. • And a reminder: It’s been lost in all the angst created when the Americans failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, but Our Boys have reached the round of 16 in three of the previous four tournaments in which they’ve competed. Remember the headline in the Sun tabloid when the draw for the 2010 tournament in South Africa was involved? The first takeaway: The London tabloids are going to have their work cut out for them. • And a reminder: The greatest April Fools’ Day prank in the history of sports took place 37 years ago, when Sports Illustrated published the saga of a pitcher named after Siddartha, who could throw a fastball 168 miles per hour, played the French horn and took the mound with one bare foot and one work boot.

If you haven't come up with a killer prank of your own yet, maybe one of these will provide some inspiration.

Then we had to leave to go to the show, and he’s like, “Why am I so sticky?” I still smile when I walk by my houseplant, thinking of the Post-It that simply read, “Toothpaste April Fools!” This would have been delightful enough, but he went the extra mile and labeled each prank with a Post-It note to make sure I wouldn’t miss them. I used to watch a commercial when I was young about a construction worker who put glue on his hard hat, and he put it on one of the pipes on the building and he hung from the building. Whenever my aunt would visit from Texas, it was always a surprise to my brother and me. I’m almost afraid to put this in writing because I hope to one day do it, but I think it would be great if someone changed the signs outside of Fred Segal to say “Steven Seagal.” Is there any point to this prank? I remember saying, “Ever wonder why I’m the one who drives you to school every morning?” My dad then started driving them to school every day to prove he was their father, so I’d say the prank was totally worth it. I was looking at my father’s toolbox one time, just playing around, and I saw Krazy Glue. I was like, “Oh, this is the thing that’s in the commercial!” I took it to school, and I realized you can’t really see that this is glue. I stayed with a friend in a hotel when I first started comedy, and he was like, “Hey, is this lotion? So my friend got up in class to throw something away in the garbage, and I stealthily put this glue on his chair. I was taking my daughter and nephew to the movies—they were 10 or 11. I still have the spoons to this day.
