USA clinch spot at World Cup finals in Qatar despite Costa Rica defeat (The Guardian)

The United States men's national team arrived at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica on Wednesday having all but qualified for the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

They pushed the ball forward and kept on the attack, but were slowed by fouls and tight defending. But the USA would never quite regain the momentum or control the pace of the match. The opening minutes of the second half saw the United Statesโ€™ best chance on goal. As for the hosts, the atmosphere was celebratory and hopeful. The 35,062-seat bandbox was packed and cheering. Had lightning struck, the worst-case scenario was an intercontinental playoff with New Zealand in June.

United States books spot to 2022 World Cup in Qatar (ESPN)

The United States men's national soccer team has qualified for the 2022 World Cup, securing its berth in the tournament in Qatar on Wednesday.

"But there's steps you have to take to get there and one of the huge steps is to qualify for World Cup." Only three teams in the 32-side field have yet to be determined. Despite the U.S. controlling play for most of the game, Juan Vargas (51st minute) and Anthony Contreras (59th) took their chances to put Costa Rica up 2-0 early in the second half. Scotland/ Ukraine. The Scotland-Ukraine playoff match originally scheduled for March 24 was postponed following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and has not been rescheduled. Now to be doing it as a coach with this group of players is something special." At 23 years old, Pulisic's 12 goals over the past two qualifying cycles rank fourth all time in U.S. history. The U.S., which went into Wednesday's game at Estadio Nacional needing only to avoid a loss of six goals or more to punch its ticket, finished the 14-game qualifying cycle with a record of seven wins, three losses and four draws for 25 points. "Growing up as sort of that golden child in [this] U.S. soccer generation, people put expectations on him. We are looking forward to the World Cup." "I don't think that has sunk in yet," he said, when asked about leading the team to the World Cup as a coach. None more so than Christian Pulisic, the star Chelsea forward. To be quite frank with you, he's dealt with them better than anybody would really deal with that.

The one deficiency each of Asia's World Cup hopefuls must address ... (ESPN)

Asia will have at least five contenders at the year-end FIFA World Cup but what are the issues they each have to solve before Qatar 2022?

Having Son as Plan A is not a problem. Against top-level opposition, however, there is suspicion he poses a limited threat. There are others who are fully capable of easing the burden on Son's shoulders. That is not to say that all the exploits their players have had playing at Asian Cups and in the AFC Champions League -- the continent's premier club competition -- count for nothing, but the World Cup is undoubtedly a step up. But if they are burdened by it, their maiden World Cup adventure could be over before they know it. Qatar have made great improvement in recent times, evident in their AFC Asian Cup 2019 triumph as well as their run to the semifinals of last year's CONCACAF Gold Cup as a guest team, but the World Cup is a different proposition altogether.

The clinch took place on the 1,267th day after a shocking 2-1 loss at Trinidad and Tobago that ended the Americans' streak of seven straight World Cup appearances. The U.S. traveled 25,042 miles on charters โ€” just over circling the globe at 24,901 โ€” plus players had up to five trans-Atlantic round trips, with Germany-based Adams and England-based Antonee Robinson making the maximum. Qualifying will not be as onerous for the 2026 World Cup, which expands to 48 nations. A growing and increasingly hypercritical fan base is hoping to see Christian Pulisic & Co. reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. Canada, which had clinched its first World Cup trip since 1986 with a win Sunday, finished first with 28 points after a 1-0 loss at Panama, ahead of Mexico on goal difference. The Americans have never won a qualifier in Costa Rica, losing 10 and drawing two. The Americans assured themselves of a berth with three games to spare for 2006, two for 2014 and one game for 1998, 2002 and 2010. All of those clinches were with wins. "The team's ecstactic." Pulisic was in tears after the defeat, which led to a shakeup at the U.S. Soccer Federation and Berhalter's hiring in December 2018 as the team's fourth coach in 25 months. El Tri moved ahead of the U.S. and clinched its eighth straight World Cup, while the U.S. finished third with 25 points and a plus-11 goal difference. While the U.S. won six of seven home games with one draw, it finished with one victory, three losses and three ties on the road.

The impact of Covid-19 on players and the use of five substitutes per match has led some in the game to suggest allowing squads to have three extra players.
