For now, there is a semi-final against South Africa to prepare for, a team who defeated England by three wickets earlier in this tournament. Two weeks ago, after a third consecutive loss in as many tournament matches, coach Lisa Keightley looked on the verge of resigning on the spot as she faced down the media. As it transpired, any such calculations were moot after India stumbled at the last hurdle, with England already a point clear of West Indies in the table. Instead, England will play their semi-final against South Africa on Thursday in Christchurch. It will be a repeat of their knockout encounter in 2017, in which England scraped home by two wickets with just two balls remaining. Dunkley had said pre-tournament that she wanted to “play fearlessly”; this innings, filled with glorious lofted drives for four, lived up to that intent. But the umpire adjusted that bowler, Deepti Sharma, had overstepped, and Du Preez returned to hit the winning run through midwicket.

Joe Root's position as England captain is untenable after yet another awful defeat (unknown)

Root is a nice guy and a great batter but he has lost touch with reality if he still thinks he is the best man for the job, writes Chris Stocks.

The best thing on this trip has been the attitude of this group. But Root has to accept responsibility for his failures during his five years as captain and must now be held to account. Justin Langer, another Australian, would be the ideal candidate for the second. Passion will only get you so far, as Root has found out during a run of results in which England have won one Test in 14 months. But recalling England’s two all-time leading wicket-takers will not lead to a dramatic change in results. Whoever takes over as director of cricket, and also the new coach, might have very different ideas.
