The inquiry was commissioned following Home Secretary K Shanmugam’s speech to parliament on March 3 during the Appropriations Committee debates. The survey link redirected to a page explaining that there was “overwhelming response” that far exceeded the “usual number of responses”. Non-profit organization Oogachaga, which provides counseling and education services to the LGBT community, called on its followers to respond to the survey in a Facebook post and said it would close “by the end of this week, probably Friday, March 25”. . The survey sought to find out whether participants felt that the LGBT+ community was accepted in Singapore and whether the participants themselves supported the LGBT+ community and its causes. Pink Dot SG also shared the link to the survey on their Facebook page on March 23 asking people to “do [their] known concerns. The survey was open to “everyone, regardless of their [their] orientation and/or gender identity,” although participants were only able to state their year of birth as 2004 or earlier – suggesting that the survey could have been aimed at people aged 18 and over.
The government has launched a survey to gather public views about the LGBT+ community in Singapore and Section 377A.
