The first gameplay trailer for Hogwarts Legacy, the upcoming Harry Potter RPG, has arrived, showing off 14 minutes of footage from the title.
“J.K. Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game, however, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World,” the company wrote. Players will also be able to customize their characters with magical gear and abilities as they progress through the game. Instead, the story will focus on a possible rebellion of goblins against the Wizarding World (something that happens with concerning regularity, it seems) and the usual cadre of dark wizards and dangerous beasts.

Whether you just want to experience the story or make every swish and flick of your wand matter, a range of difficulty options will be available to meet various skill levels enabling players to experience the game in a way most enjoyable to them. We are honored to have been entrusted with the freedom to create a brand-new wizarding world experience for fans around the world. Many fans of Harry Potter imagined what it would be like to receive their own Hogwarts letter, be sorted, and attend Hogwarts. More than anything else, we wanted to allow fans, after all these years, to finally tell their story, their way, at the most beloved school of witchcraft and wizardry. Part of the magic of Hogwarts Legacy is exploring familiar locations in a new light, like just how close Hogsmeade is to Hogwarts or seeing the Forbidden Forest in the daylight. With Hogwarts Legacy, we had the incredible opportunity to tell any story we wanted within the wizarding world. “Ranrok has seen a glimmer of a magic that wizardkind tried to hide – even from themselves – and he wants that power in particular. As you learn from your professors and classmates, you’ll gain new spells and abilities to use in combat and puzzles throughout Hogwarts Legacy. “There were hundreds of choices that had to be made between lore and gameplay and even some of the differences between each film and book,” Alan said. And, like Harry, the player’s character is a bit of a celebrity from the outset due to the fact that they are starting as a fifth-year and because they survived a—” Sorry Moira, no spoilers! Beyond just architecture and design, I’ve been consistently amazed at how much our Hogwarts feels like the magical school I’ve always wanted to attend, including extracurricular activities like avoiding Peeves while sneaking into the Restricted Section of the library. “We built the Hogwarts we as fans ourselves wanted to explore,” Boston said. Hogwarts Legacy is your story, rooted firmly in wizarding world lore, and it starts with creating the witch or wizard you want to be.

So the reception Hogwarts Legacy gets from the general public will be closely watched. In Hogwarts Legacy, the player character is a new wizard or witch, except they’re starting as a fifth-year student. Hogwarts Legacy is set in the late 1800s, about 100 years before Harry Potter enrolls.

We’re sure we speak for every Harry Potter fan when we say we’ve always wanted our own version of the Room of Requirement, and Hogwarts Legacy aims to please. For a moment, it looked like the statue of Salazar Slytherin from the Chamber of Secrets with that curling beard, but we suspect this is someone else. Mastering broom flight comes ‘highly recommended’ in the game – which is not surprising – there is a lot of ground to cover when exploring. We visited the Prefect’s bathroom in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, with a little help from Cedric Diggory. And in the game, one shot boasts a luxury chamber with a mermaid portrait and a huge swimming pool. In the teaser, we spot History of Magic professor Professor Binns, a colourful poltergeist that surely must be Peeves – and the Gryffindor ghost, Nearly Headless Nick. This teaser reveals that poor Nick was obsessing over joining the Headless Hunt 100 years before he was telling Harry about it! And although some areas of the castle seem unfamiliar, there are certain artefacts and rooms that we recognise from Harry’s time at Hogwarts. We’re quite sure we spotted the Fat Lady at one point. And as the voiceover mentions, they may have a little something to do with ‘the fate of the entire wizarding world’. No pressure, then. One major thing that we learnt from the Hogwarts Legacy walkthrough is more detail about our character, who we can shape and form in any way we like. From dungeons to portraits to hidden corridors to rooms we don’t even recognise, this is your chance to uncover some of the castle’s big secrets. Apparently, some creatures that live on the outskirts of Hogwarts have been corrupted by dark magic, while others are susceptible to poachers – but don’t worry, you’ll have the ability to rescue them and nurse them back to health. You can watch the behind the scenes featurette here and you can watch that gameplay right here... In fact, there is mention of ‘forgotten magic’ and to beware those seeking to harness it to ‘destroy wizard-kind’. So, what sort of forgotten magic can we expect to see?

Gamers can invent their own Hogwarts student and will battle against an ancient threat attempting to destroy the Wizarding World, either using their magic for good or succumbing to the temptations of the dark arts. Fans will have a chance to do just that in Hogwarts Legacy later this year; the developers have confirmed that the video game will release in 2022, but no more specifics than that have been announced yet.

But JK Rowling’s presence looms too large and she remains too connected to the franchise, so I understand the desire for boycotts based on that alone. I have deep childhood connections to Harry Potter and I know that thousands of perfectly unproblematic people worked hard to make a fun, charming game based on that world. No, she may not be writing Fantastic Beast scripts or working on Hogwarts Legacy, but this is not a George Lucas situation where she’s sold the rights to Harry Potter to WB (as much as they might love that). It stands to reason that yes, any time any Harry Potter property makes money, that filters back directly to JK Rowling herself. What’s happened now with both the game and things like the new Harry Potter movies is that you have a very nervous Warner Bros. and thousands upon thousands of people working on Harry Potter projects that do not support Rowling’s views trying to make enjoyable, profitable offerings for fans. One is that this game, and really anything related to the Harry Potter universe should not be supported or given coverage due to Harry Potter creator JK Rowling’s firmly anti-trans positions that she’s expressed in the years since the books were released. The other side says that Rowling has nothing to do with the development of this game, and that you can separate the creator from their universe to still enjoy it.
