Apple iOS 15.4 Release: Should You Upgrade? (Forbes)

Apple iOS 15.4 is the biggest iOS 15 update yet for iPhones and iPads, but it has bugs...

03/22 Final Verdict - one week on iOS 15.4 looks to be a very solid update and it even hides a handy scan text feature which was not included in the official release notes. Storage capacity issues have been consistent throughout iOS 15’s release and Apple needs to fix this now the software is relatively stable after a dumpster fire launch. The headline news in iOS 15.4 adds Apple’s long-awaited Face ID support for users wearing a mask. All-in-all, iOS 15.4 looks like another rock solid release from Apple which has really hit its stride after iOS 15's bug-ridden release. There has been a media report of the release causing excessive battery drain, but upon further investigation I found this to be no more than scaremongering. Note: for those still hesitant to upgrade, bookmark this guide. Unlike Apple’s relatively flawless recent iOS 15 updates, iOS 15.4 is far from bug free. Your device should prompt you to upgrade automatically, but the update can also be manually triggered by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update. If you are running newer beta software (see ‘The Road Ahead’ section at the end), you must unenroll your device before the update will appear. Notably, I’m seeing reports of irregular storage consumption, system instability and irregular internet connectivity. Both Unc0ver and checkra1n have yet to crack iOS 15, so iOS 15.4 is off limits for you. Note: this will be my last jailbreak coverage, until progress is made. Apple has released iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 and they are two of the most anticipated iOS 15 updates so far, packed full of new features (including Face ID Mask Unlock), bug fixes and security updates.

Apple has also added support for different skin tones in all the handshake and new hand emojis for better inclusivity. The ‘Face with Open Eyes and Hand Over Mouth’, is also new and supposed to have a more neutral expression compared to the previous design. The update also includes new hand gestures, which includes one emoji where the index finger is pointing at the viewer, like in the iconic Uncle Sam poster. The new ‘Face with Diagonal Mouth’ can also be used to express the same set of feelings. Apple has also added a ‘Dotted Line Face’ emoji which is supposed to be used to represent something invisible. The emoji should be useful when reading some of the unbelievable WhatsApp messages that tend to get forwarded.

Apple has released iOS 15.4. This system update brings important features such as the ability to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask.

That said, Apple is also adding support for glasses, which will also make it more convenient to unlock your iPhone while on the street. iOS 15.4 is even better for those who love to run personal automation. Universal Control requires your Mac to be running macOS Monterey 12.3, which was also released Monday, and iPad to be running iPadOS 15.4. There’s also support for a new Tap to Pay feature that lets iPhones accept contactless payments, though third-party providers like Stripe will have to add support to make it useful. iOS 15.4, the latest version of Apple’s iPhone operating system, has been released and should soon be available to download ahead of the Friday release of Apple’s new third-generation iPhone SE and green iPhone 13.
