The United States condemns in the strongest terms Iran’s missile attack on the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. This attack targeted a civilian residence in Erbil, the Kurdistan Region’s capital city, without any justification. We will support the Government of Iraq in holding Iran accountable, and we will support our partners throughout the Middle East in confronting similar threats from Iran. The United States of America stands behind the full sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Iraq. The United States stands with Prime Minister Kadhimi and the leaders of the Kurdistan Region, President Nechirvan Barzani, and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, in condemning this assault on the sovereignty of Iraq and its Kurdistan region.
Revolutionary Guards say target in Erbil was Israeli 'strategic centre' following attack in Syria.
The US defence official said it was still uncertain exactly how many missiles were fired and exactly where they had landed. One Iraqi official in Baghdad initially said several missiles had hit the US consulate in Erbil and that it was the target of the attack. In retaliation, Iran launched a barrage of missiles at al-Asad airbase, where US troops were stationed. Later, Lawk Ghafari, the head of Kurdistan’s foreign media office, said none of the missiles had struck the US facility but that areas around the compound had been hit. The troops will still provide air support and other military aid for Iraq’s fight against Islamic State. US forces stationed at Erbil’s airport compound have come under fire from rocket and drone attacks in the past, with US officials blaming Iran-backed groups.
